Is it beer o'clock yet?
Was just having a laugh on the Adelaide Board about desirable trades, noting a suggestion that Fremantle might trade Schammer for a 3rd round pick...:D I love trade talk...

Anyway, did get me thinking about where he is at - I know he is highly rated at Fremantle (and at Port) and we tried hard to get him to come back home at the end of 2004 as part of the Josh Carr trade.

However, since then he has been unlucky with injuries etc and failed to have an significant impact at AFL level. Clearly he has the talent, but...

Where do you see him being at in terms of his AFL career? Is he a tradeable commodity?

By the way, good luck for Saturday night. I, of course, hope you lose, but will be happy with a close one (so long as the Eagles game is closer, or Essendon pulls off a Sheedy/Hird miracle:)).

I hope it is not Peter Bell's last game.

Hahah Schammer wont be traded for a third round anytime soon. But he is tradeable if a First round pick comes in :D

Has ripped games open before and CC played him out of position in the backline tryng to use him to get run of the backline.IMO he has a great work ethic and determination to succeed. With the illness(not injury) he had this year he has basically missed it but as he got more game time he has shown more.I remember Bell saying on a radio interview when he first started at the club that he is a ultra competative, wanting to beat everyone at everything.
Would be very surprised if traded.
Schammer time is just around the corner:thumbsu:

Schammertime is a required player IMO. Would basically would have to be one hell of an offer to even consider trading him. I wouldn't trade him though.
A third round pick is laughable..... pffffft

Is not tradeable unless it is a ripping deal for us. He slipped to 13 in the draft because everyone thought he was to small. His 2nd season was a ripper i believe he got 13 Brownlow votes and was hailed by many as a future Brownlow medalist he was regularly picking up 25 possesions and kicking multiple goals.

IF and thats a big IF Peter Bell retires it will be very good for Byron's career (not that i wanna loose Belly) as he will be able to move back into the midfield like he was a few years back now.

He was wasted last year across half back, but now they have found that Blacky is more suited to that creating role so it releases him into the middle.
He adds some zip to our midfield and is very hard at the footy for a little fellar, when he gets a decent pre-season and fingers crossed stays healthy next year i think we have one of our best midfielders and a top 5 in the B&F.

He is a very hard worker, absolutely works his ass off. I see him as Fremantles Michael Braun as far as his fitness and footballing abilities go.

Thanks guys,

So summarising - you would consider him tradeable but only for with a big potential upside, e.g. a first rounder or ready made player (although I can't think of what sort of ready made player would do - he offers exactly what Fremantle seem to need, midfield pace and creativity to match the Carr hardness and forward line strength...).

Hopefully, he can pull together a strong pre-season and stay healthy in 2008.

2008 is a big year for Byron, he needs to play to his potential on a regular basis. Half forward with stints on the wing and on the ball will probably be his role next season.

Gentleman Jeff?
Do you think Schammertime looks like Butthead?
Would that make Crowley Beavis??

Do we photo comparisons?

So in summary, do you think Schammer can do The Great Cornhoilo?:p

Spot on again Belnakor.

It is well known at FFC that Butthead Schammer is being groomed to fill the role currently held by Peter Bell.

Butthead Schammer has some faults with his game, and the stagnation of his development is an indictment on the player development programs at the club.
Having said that, Butthead Schammer is too good to let go. For one, he is a big game performer who looks and feels completely at ease with the pressure cooker atmosphere of finals football - this is the kind of player we need to hang onto.

No. No it's not. He spent months in hospital during the pre season. That would account for any stagnation.

FWIW I think an appropriate trade would be looked at.

The thing is, these people who want to trade Schammer, also want to trade Haselby.. and yet want to keep Des Headland on the team. Seriously, do you guys want a bunch of outside, flashy players who go missing with the chips are down? Butthead Schammer is a known commodity in finals. That is more than alot of guys can say.

I just wouldn't trade him full stop. He has too much potential, he could be anything, he could be the next peter bell. We wouldn't trade him when his stocks are lowest.

The amount of times supporters fool themselves by talking about player "potential". Potential gentlemen gets you nowhere and often gets players delisted - a player does or doesnt do. Which one is schammer ?

At the same time though you can't expect teenagers to dominate. Salopek just started playing good consistent footy this year.

Ask Chocko... he was the one who called Schammer directly - bypassing club and manager - to try and convince him to come play for Port a couple of years back...

One must not forget Schammer's fighting ability to get himself back to match fitness. To be that sick, have double abdominal surgery, drop 16kg (20% of his bodyweight), lose his entire fitness base and muscle base... then get back to playing decent footy - all within 7-8 months - - that's testament to his incredible work ethic and perseverance. :thumbsu:

He played a great game this last weekend - and I look forward to seeing him take the next step and carving it up in 2008 after a solid, typically hard-working pre-season.

Last year his kicking was all over the place. The reports i heard from the preseason just gone was that Schammer was about to take his game to a whole new level.

He had apparently ironed out the flaw in his kicking and his fitness base and his skills were at an all time high. Then came the appendicitis, followed by bowel obstruction.

I wouldn't trade him for anything bar a top 5 pick in this draft. He has the potential to be a very classy midfieder in the Crawford/Bell mould.

Why the need to whiteant the club? I just don't get it.

The player development program at Freo? It hasn't hampered Pavlich or Hase too much over the course of their careers. It hasn't been a hurdle to former no-name rookies like Hayden, Sandi, Grover, and Johnson or late picks like Crowley and Warnock.

The argument that good players get there through their own drive and talent and bad players don't because the club let them down is piss-weak, especially if one excludes the inevitable delay in a players development that results from being hampered by injuries as has clearly been the case with Schammer over the past few seasons.

Salopek has had more injuries than J-Lo.

As for the person who wouldnt take a 1st rounder for Schammer. Pass the pipe buddy, you've had way too much. 170cm blokes who cant play midfield and struggling for a form is 3rd round territory. Last year a Brownlow medalist went for a 2nd rounder.

Jlo's injury is way more serious then Salopek's.

Akemanis was a 30 year old and past his prime when he was being traded. If Aka was going to get traded in his prime at least a high first round pick would have been expected.

Sal had pretty bad run with injuries. Think he even had chronic fatigue? Certainly, alot better than Schammer who only had that bowel problem this year.

Yes, Aker was 29 but he is at least 2 classes above Schammer. Byron has never been the same after that big hit.

Only a bowel problem? Take it you've had one from experience then. Byron is what? 22? He's not judd but he's got time to build on it. This would have been his year if it werent for badluck. You do realise that he was basically out of the game from New Year till what.. round 6? 7? something like that.
