They have been deplorable this year, and it begs the question, where are they at list wise?
Is the list OK, and Ken is poor, or has Ken done the best with this list?

They have a decent young midfield in JHF, Butters, Rozee and Bergman.
They have one decent forward in Georgiades.
They lost their best defender last year unders, and the others are b graders.
They have no small forwards of any real value.

On top of that they have no first rounder and if they get Nas, they won't have for another two years.

They have a number of big holes in their list that unfortunately arnt easy to fill.

They checked out before the season started, the whole coaching saga at Port has been a disaster.

Yea gotta say been a bit of a waste and doubt we will see this happen again (handover) or not unless the side already was completely bottom of the ladder rubbish and it was a planned handover like with Roos at Melbourne. Just wasted a year Port and it could really hurt. But on the other hand am interested to see how they look next year after a freshen up.

Even last year the signs were there. I think they've hit a massive cliff, but I also think Ken has squeezed a lot from the list. Ken is a great home and away coach, but doesn't do high pressure games well. It's clear they are massively carried by their stars. Look at how they've performed with and without JHF. Without JHF and Butters they'd be scary bad.

they need to hit the draft, unfortunately for them the coming few years are not the ideal time to plan a raid on the draft.
Honestly don't believe there terrible season is all down to the disastrous coaching call.

Should never have announced it publicly.

Said so at the time.

Port need to build depth as their list is too thin.

Josh Carr is in for a world of hurt. If he's smart he would try get out of the deal or his coaching career is over before it starts like McQualter

Depends on whether the NGA access and Father sons fall in our favour.

Dougie Cochrane kicked 4 goals the first half in his SANFL debut as a 17yo on the weekend. Many seem to think it's already a done deal that he'll get to port under revamped NGA rules. Plus another kid is racking up playststion stats in sanfl juniors that is aligned to port, however is also apparently is a standout bball player so not guaranteed to stick with footy.

David Rodan and Stephen Salopak's lads have shown they are tracking as first rounders but have to nominate port (rodan also tied to bombers under NGA apparently).

If those all pan out, we get NWM and hang onto butters, it might only be a 1-2 year blip. However thats alot that needs to go right. The flip side is few or none of those pan out and it there'll be more years like this one.

As it stands we currently struggle to field a full team of quality standard AFL players with a clean injury slate, a few injuries and we are stuffed (especially to our top 20% players).

Even if it falls in your favor how do you plan on getting all of that ? You don’t have the assets to do all of that

I'm not fully across how all this works these days, however these kids aren't this years draft. I presume a mixture of trading future first rounders, going into deficit, trading out a few players who want to go home for picks. You'd like to think the people who are paid to do this full-time have gameplanned a few scenarios to ensure we have it covered. Mind you these are probably also the same people who traded Houston for a bag of chips so maybe not.

We have holes in the key defensive stocks and small forwards. Hard to judge our list on current results while we’re hammered with injuries and the coaching saga that’s plagued the year.

Just today we’re missing Marshal, Luko, Rioli, SPP, Bergman, JHF, Rozee, Esava, Visentini and Burgoyne injured now as well. Take out 9-10 best 22 and any team will get hammered. Unfortunately it’s been an issue all year not being able to put close to our 22 on the park all season. Depth will cover 3-5 best 22 without a drop in performance, not many teams can carry the injury load we’ve had most the season.

We certainly have list holes but the overall list when fit, isn’t as dire as the current results make it to be.

I think Port have a good core of mids, but they lack key positions and small forwards. Unfortunately those are the two hardest positions to fill with quality. Its the same problem North have.

Alir is 30 years old and your best key defender. He isnt consistent either.

Georgiades is your best forward, and unfortunately SPP is having his 2nd ACL, and the future of Marshall is in question. Whatever the question is, Ollie Lord isn't the answer.

So in reality Port needs 2 key defenders, 2 key forwards and 2 quality small forwards.
To find those is really hard. North have been trying for half a decade and still havent found one.

I’ve been waxing lyrical about our need to draft quality key defenders for about 5-6 years on our board. Often met with the response that our key defenders are fine when in reality, all we stock up with are rookies who are most likely to never play a game.

We haven’t used a first round pick on a key defender since Chaplin nearly 20 years ago. I find that just absolutely mind blowing. In that same time, we’ve also only used 2 or 3 second rounders. Then we wonder why we’re so poor there for so long.

I think key forwards were ok. Georgiades a gun and both Luko and Marshall (if he returns to full health) are both 30+ goal forwards and all still young enough to be there long term. If we got 55+, 30+ and 30+ from those 3 next year, that’s very reasonable for your key forwards.

Small forwards are essentially non existent. Another part of the list we ignore.

I used to sigh everytime the Adelaide recruiters would draft another key defender with our first round pick.
Now I understand why they prioritised them, as they arnt easy to find.

We have also been pretty lucky. We lost our top 10 draft pick key defender in McAsey for nothing, but luckily we also drafted Worrell that year, so he has more than made up for it.
We got Keane for nothing as a delisted FA.
We got Hinge for nothing as a delisted FA.
We got Michaelanny as a father son.
We got Butts for pick 39 in the rookie draft.
We got Murray for nothing via the SPP.
Arse beats class every day of the week.

Cardone screwed us with the Houston trade he is a Plant and works for Eddie McGuire.

That we can all agree on. How can we have a board member that has clearly a conflict of interest to our club? I am guessing Kochie keeps him there to keep the media onside to his narratives.

Also, there are too many Kochie appointed board members that do not have the club interests at heart and have been in their positions for far too long. Our AFL/Kochie appointed board needs a clean out.

The biggest issue and Ken's major failing is player development. How many key position players has he developed during his tenure? Most of KPP are trades from other clubs who usually have great debut seasons then fall away rapidly the following seasons.

I think it’s a real chicken or the egg scenario here. Nearly all of the KPP that we’ve cycled through the past 10+ years have all been pick 50+/rookie picks. The chances of them being quality AFL level KPP was limited from the start. The few we have invested in earlier (Georgiades, Marshall), have shown they can be developed into quality KPP.

Is it is a list management failure in not investing further with quality KPP over quantity? Or should we still expect a couple of those 50+/rookie picks to have come on better.

I lean towards the list managements failure to invest through the draft in quality KPP as more the leading cause as to our failure to develop. It’s hard to develop what’s not there. Looking back at all those failed KPP we’ve discarded over the years, none of them have gone on to bite us in the backside which suggests they simply weren’t good enough to begin with.

And I absolutely hate that this could be perceived as defending Ken as I absolutely cannot stand the man and he remains a shocking coach on his own terms but I think the torch needs to be shined on the list management team for our lack of development in the KPP space.

Cardone controls the Media hence why our Club escapes the Blowtorch. For those who are too Young to know or remember it was Cardone who played a Major Part in our Entry to the AFL being blocked in 1990.

Right now the Club is in serious danger of becoming a Minnow in SA and a Crows Flag would be a Dagger to the Heart as the next Generation of Kids all flock to the Crows.

I think their list isn't far off at all.

JHF, Butters, Rozee, Georgiades and Bergman is a seriously good start. Then a decent number of solid role players.

It's all fallen apart this year but if their best players get back in form they could easily make finals next year. And the areas they're deficient in shouldn't be too difficult to fix.

Those draftee would take 2-4 years to develop and to get them and NWM you will need to go into draft deficit after the compromised draft is done with your list still in rebuild.

Shouldn't be too difficult to fix???? They don't have trade capital to fix them if they get NWM and he will add already to their strength in the midfield (Butters, JHF and Bergman) so they won't have any salary capital for Butters let alone to attract FA players to fix their forward (Georgiadias and Roli when he is fit) and especially defence (Rozee). They need to go to the draft with quality picks as Hinkley had stuffed their list by overpaying players who aren't even quality players to remain as premiership "contenders". The decent picks used for Sinn and Jones don't look like quality.
