Which Ablett is/was better - Gary Ablett Snr or Jnr?

Snr was just a good footballer in an era where footballers were pretty average really. If Snr played today he would be delisted by Geelong's VFL team. Football didn't start actually looking good with clean movement until about the mid to late 90s. Roosting the ball as far as you could to a pack/1on1 isnt highly skillful, impressive or as good to watch. Jnr easily
Oh, really? Bud, You have no clue. Forget about You Tube. Did you ever see Ablett Snr play? Live? He was a mercurial, rough, dirty, supremely skilled, undisciplined, hard, instinctive, stellar footballer.

These days, with AFL [not trad Aussie Rules] being a mix of basketball, Gaelic football, wannabe NFL, soccer, marathon running, PC sucking - sure. You may be right.

But for the wrong reasons.

Go troll somewhere else child.

Nah kicking 60m on either foot isn't skillful, making a wet heavy ball in packs isn't skillful.
Jesus kids today have no idea
I am not a kid. You are unable to differentiate something that was good for its time and evolution of skills, training etc

Senior fairly comfortably, had all juniors special traits along with sheer strength and size, add a touch of mongrel/Xfactor/sheer will and the ability to nail 70 mtr goals on the run and you have Gary Alert Senior.

Heard he was a sublime little athlete back in the day as well, although through my own extensive research I've been unable to confirm, which isn't unusual considering record keeping in the those days were poor.

As was said in John Wick, Junior is a Boogie man, Senior is who you send to kill the Boogie man.

So why wouldn't Ablett Snrs skills have evolved with training and the time etc. It's a rubbish premise

Give yourself an uppercut, or look up Senior on YouTube, he was nothing like Dunstal or Lockett, the man fished with a longer pole.

I am talking about the Ablett Snr in his day. Thats what this threads about isn't it? The footballing ability he had in his time, probably wouldn't cut it at VFL level today. He was a lot better 99% of the competition he had then but today he would be completely shut down by a guy like Ed Langdon.

Where did I mention Lockett or Dunstal? I rate them both well below Ablett Snr.

As for the uppercut I'll get my mrs to deliver that later when the room is lit only by a dimmed lamp and the leather comes out.

No That's a stupid way to look at things

No, I’d say you agreed with the view that people who, in your eyes, sin, need to repent.

I love how a ‘like’ somehow reflects a view that never even existed but an open statement in which he professes to love everyone, means nothing.

Jog on

Bit defensive/rich from someone who puts the boots into every other club on here.

That's a bingo!!

One could argue about Lockett and Dunstal making it in today's game, not Ablett though, freakish athlete with sublime skills.

Of course they would make it. Lockett was better than Kennedy and Lynch on the lead. Kicked at 70% for goal and was a great contested mark. Would he break Coventrys record in this era? Nah but he would still be a star as would Dunstall

No.1 Ablett senior, there is no comparison. People need to look past off field misdemeanors and take an unbiased look at how great he really was.
The words champion and freak apply to one only person I've seen play football in my life time, I'm 60.
Carey, Hird and Junior are one level behind.

Sorry but do I?

Hawthorn? Grudging respect.
Collingwood? Open hatred but again, strong club and very good team
Richmond? Open admission, I have nothing but disdain for them
Carlton? Never said a word about them
GWS? Strong respect, unbelievable amount of effort they’ve put in to establish themselves both in Sydney and in country NSW
Sydney? Incredible club. Our closest counterpart in terms of finding a way to buck the trend year after year
Adelaide? Stand hard. Not much respect but no hatred
Port? See Adelaide
St Kilda? My second team for a long time and no disregard for them whatsoever, they are on a good trajectory and I’m happy for Richo
Bulldogs? My best mates team and again, a long-time second team and no problem with them whatsoever
Freo? Joke of a club but a complete irrelevance to me so what do I care
GCS? Trying to spread the word in an area of the world I love, and perpetually r*ped by every other club in the league. No dislike for them
Brisbane? Love watching them, loved watching them in the past and genuinely hope they build to something big
Melbourne? Contain probably my two favourite non cats in Gawn and Jones, an ever present second team and if there’s one side I was happy to get flogged by in the finals last year, it is Melbourne. I genuinely hope they recover and compete this year.
Eagles? No love for them but like us, they have been able to sustain competitiveness for 30 years, and that is worthy of respect.
Essendon? Hatred. Complete disrespect. No attempt to hide from it.

Which brings me to your club.

An absolute irrelevance for 20 seasons now, the irrelevance of which probably peaked in 2007 when we did you by 18 goals in a qualifying final. Despite the best efforts of a lot of big hearted players and staff, it hasn’t really progressed from there has it?
And it’s not going to this year, or next.

Now jog on, find the c*** you actually think I am - because you’re clearly f***ing mistaken as Xtreme is quite literally the only person on this forum I’m perpetually putting the boot into, as opposed to other clubs or fans, and f*** right off

Agreed but how good would they be? Bloody tough gig being a leading forward in the modern game, 60/70 goal forwards for mine.

As for Senior, he probably wouldn't even be a forward, big bodied mid who would tear the comp apart IMO.

I reckon they'd still be the the 2 best key forwards of this era it's hard to know though. They would probably be made to lose 25 kegs and spend half the game in the midfield. I really hate modern footy

Don't forget about taking part in zones and applying defensive pressure, the days of 130 goal forwards are gone, unless Micheal Jordan goes back in time and settles in Australia as a young boy and takes the game up.

Ben Simmons would have been an insane player had he stuck with AFL
