So Brock is gone for pick 11, we didn't manage to get any other trades done. We currently have 1,2,18,34,50. etc in the ND and the valuable #1 in PSD. So who goes? Who stays? Do we upgrade Valenti?

Thoughts.

Personally Bell looks gone.
Buckley may join him, Johnson would be shaky, Bartram also shaky...Who else folks???

Correct me if I'm wrong but the belief is that Newton is definitely contracted, and we're pretty sure Bell has one more year left. I have a feeling we are unable to pay them out (something about needing a reason like Carroll last year).

If that is the case I'd go - PJ, Bartram, Cheney out. If we can give Bell the flick I'd join him with PJ and Cheney.

Others in the line of fire are Buckley and McNamara, but I love their upside, I can't understand those who don't rate McNamara. Some want Dunn gone but I can't see why.

Securing a worthy PSD1 selection will be interesting, if we don't lock someone decent in then we may as well not use it.

Upgrading Valenti and Spencer is a difficult issue. If the AFL bring in the 3 year rookie rule I'd look to keep Valenti on this and delist and then re-rookie Spencer (who would stael him from us!). Do we really need to elevate either of these two? Especially if we get Ball what is the point of Valenti.

I agree completely on pretty much every point you've made there... Would really like to see Valenti elevated, so if we can ditch Bell, I'd still delist the other three players you mentioned, and elevate Valenti... However the Ball equation does make it a little different for Valents, but I really hope we hold onto him...

MB...that's a very harsh call on the young bloke . Cheney looks a good player to me. With their "youth policy"...there is just no way the Dees will delist him. He is very much part of the plan with our young group coming through. Will be at the club for a while yet I would have thought.

I would look at Bell and Bartram first , before anyone else.

Bell is contracted, which means he is almost assured a position for next year.

I would look at delisting Cheney and picking him back up as a rookie. A good young player no doubt, I'm just not sure whether he has the ability to succeed at AFL level.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head, would think that PJ may hold his onto his spot due to our thin ruck stocks!

Or we could gamble on Jamar, Meesen, Spencer and Martin to carry our ruck for a year or two and pick one or two ruckmen in the draft/rookie draft.

I'd love to get rid of Bell (can we not just pay him out?) and PJ.

One think I hadn't thought of if we do grab Ball in the PSD is what to do with Valenti, and if we do get Ball, then Valenti might have to be cut free to further his opportunities.

Can't see a future for Valenti, with our young emerging midfield coming through with the likes of Blease,Strauss,Scully,Trengove/Martin plus maybe Luke Ball yet to be played where is there room for him?

I agree with most in saying I would love to get rid of bell, but if he is still contracted this is very unlikely. Unfortunately for valenti he will probably have to make way, especially if luke ball is on his way. No brainer there.

Would like to see us keep Cheney..still very young and I would be surprised if he was delisted. Buckley might be more likely to make way, has had time to prove himself and has only really shown glimpses to be fair.

To use picks 1,2,11,18,34,50 and PSD 1 we need to get rid of another 3 players (mclean, robbo, wheals and wheatley have already gone) and maybe another one to promote a rookie.

Would not mind if PJ left, if we draft a good young ruckman in his place. Dunn is another one I wouldn't mind letting go of. Versatile player who works hard but I just can't see him being there in our future plans. People have been calling for Bartram to go, and I can see why. But I doubt it will happen, there is still a lot to like about Clint. And considering the levels of maturity, commitment and dedication to the team he showed when his dad passed away this year, might be a tad harsh delisting him. However there isn't much room for sentimental value anymore...

Personally I would get rid of Buckley, PJ, Dunn, Zomer and Valenti (btw Newton is a nor brainer but I fear he is still under contract)

Ideally we'de like to lose 4 players - but with Bell and Newton both under contract I suggest we will drop 3 players and not use pick 50.

Bartram, Johnson and one of either Dunn/Cheney.

If we are able to pay a player out and delist him it will be different though - can anyone confirm if we are allowed to pay a contract out, have it included in next years salary cap (helpful), and replace him with another player? If we can do this then we will lose Bell and Newton and keep Dunn/Cheney.

Can not belive i'm typing this but Juice should get 1 more year. We have lost Robbo whom was our leading goal kicker this year and Miller is not someone who is going to kick 50 goals/year. Newton has shown a bit. He has good hands and has improved his 2nd efforts.

I think Juice will play ahead of Watts in R1.

Bell - gives us our #34 pick.
PJ - since we're probably drafting two mid's with our first two picks, chances are our #11 & #18 picks will be a talls, & one will be a ruckman. That would make our ruck list awfully cramped (three main ruckman, one rookie listed ruckman & one pinch-hitter), so one will most likely go. This will give us our PSD pick.
Bartram or Buckley - whichever one goes we re-draft as a rookie. This means we can up-grade someone like Valenti to the main list, & keep the player we had to give the flick.

You can't cut players that are contracted, hence Bell and PJ stay.

Our list management over the last 2 years has been bewildering. Why would you re-sign Bell and Newton to 2 years deals in 2008, when both are fringe players?

And it was a massive mistake to renew JMac's contract for another year.

List management is about improving your list. If we'd freed up some spots on our list, we could have got the likes of Mumford, Kennedy or McGlynn for low draft picks which will now go unused. And a quality player in Valenti will find a home elsewhere.

Be careful saying that around here!!

But Ill back you up and say I dont think it will hurt us to play him a bit next year. He might improve a bit and even if he doesnt we cant ask Watts, Jurrah (and another young tall we draft) to take on too much load with their young bodies.

Also, someone mentioned PJ is contracted for next year - is that correct??

we still have a few more drafts that we can get good players from that can get a place in that side. and i think blease should have to get in but we'll hopefully get a judge on how good he is next year

- Martin in
- Jamar first ruck

I would be very surprised if we used pick 50.

This would mean we would have 5 selections in the November draft and 1 selection in the PSD. Robbo, Wheels, Wheats and McLean are gone. Therefore, we only have to delist two players. Or am I missing something?

Potential rookie upgrades.

Agree with this. I was very surprised we signed McDonald. Bell and Newton did not deserve two year deals, especially Newton. Very poor list management.

On a side note, you can get rid of contracted players if they agree to it. We did it with Nathan Carroll.
