Everything Danger did today was pure leadership. He's going to captain this club eventually.

The 2 or 3 smothers, tackles, the chase downs, the oh so typical throwing himself onto a footy to get it before someone else and then whipping out a handball that he did today were just amazing.

He is so close to being captain material right now, i dont know mentally if he's right for it yet but to me he seems to be. Love hearing him talk also, a leader for sure.

He may be young but the more i see, the more he is catching up to be captain.

Scott Thompson is my choice of captain. He took the team on his back and carried them home today, exactly what I want to see from a captain.

Followed by Dangerfield in a few years.

I agree with this, but everything that has come from the club says VB, I dont think VB is inspirational enough on the field to be a captain though. Thompson seems more of the type of on-field captain mould. but is not apparently a good leader off the field

I agree. But todays version of Scott Thomson not the one who has looked disinterested at times this year. Paddy will definately be captain one day but would hate to burdon him with it for at least for 2 years.

He was huge today; his stats were impressive, but his impact on the ground was even better than they suggest.

His intensity and desperation were incredible, he busted his arse to make contest after contest, and he threw himself into all of them like a madman.

Having read the article where he stated that the Crows Captaincy was an honour that wasn't to be degraded by using as bait to get somebody home.

With that article in mind, watching how he played today, all I could think was that Dangerfield was staking his claim to be our next Captain; and if he can consistently play like he did today, then it'd be hard to argue with.

Having said that, Scott Thompson of old was back today, great game from him today, and if he can get back to that level, he'd have to be in contention; if only for a deputy or leadership role in general. Led from the front today, was a Roo-esque Captain performance.

With the right support from guys like VB, Maric, Knights, Truck and Thommo, that wouldn't worry me, I think he's up to it.

Keeping in mind that I'm comfortable with VB as Captain, but have wanted Knights as our next Captain for ages, today in my opinion, especially live, Dangerfield made a massive statement that he has to be a serious contender for the position.

Yeah, but look... as good as he is today, hes still not breaking 20 touches.

As inspirational is he is... Dangerfield still has an awful lot to learn about the game. If he does it, he'll be the best player in the league, but lets not act like hes there yet.

Absolutely. As it stands he's an outstanding impact player, but consistency and volume of football won needs to come to him before he becomes a serious blue chip midfielder in this game. I've no doubt it will mind you, not concerned in the slightest.

Really want danger to focus on his game for a few years.

As good as he could be... hes not there yet, and i dont want him worry about anything but becomming the best player in the league.

Wouldn't worry him in my opinion as i believe he is of that rare breed that are born leaders not made.

Not suggesting anything about his leadership qualities, obviously he has them in spades.

Just suggesting i want him to fully develop as a player... hes still very much a work in progress. Would rather focus him entirely upon becomming the brownlow medallist player, before i gave him any additional duties.

Could the club go down a new path with Co-captains next year. VB & Danger?

VB as the spokesman of the club and danger as the on-field pressence. This would take some weight of Dangers shoulders in the short term.
Just food for thought.

The timing isnt great for Danger, if Goody had gone on 1 more year he would have a far greater chance. If he doesnt become Captain now, he wont for a long time if ever if we go with VB.

If we go with a Thompson like, then Danger could take over in a few years.

Excellent post, fully agree.

100% agree. Dangerfield has lots of brilliant traits, including leadership potential, but for now he needs to focus on his game.

We're not in the era where your captain needs to be your best player anymore. They simply need to be a good player who will always make the best 22, always give their utmost, and have strong leadership skills. They also need to be the sort of player that thrives under the pressure of leadership. Frankly, Van Berlo is already that player. Even if he's only captain for a year or two until Dangerfield is "ready", we'd be foolish not to take advantage of his readiness.

I'd like to see Thommo given a go. He plays the sort of game that says " come with me " Danger does as well, but a bit more experience needed.

I still don't get the Van Berlo for captain. I don't believe VB has the game to take a game by the scruff when we are in the poo. Thommo and Danger do however.

the next captain is for the next 6 or 7 years, whoever it is will be the guy for the long haul.

Is VB a serious blue chip player?
I think a big part of being a captain is how you perform and lead onfield i would be very worried about vb being captain. I still think he is yet to perform at a consistantly good level. (Yes he may have leadership qualities but i dont think that alone should get him there)
I have always thought he was played to early and been given games when he wasnt in our best 22. What other young players have we played out of the box and kept them in the team when they wernt performing at a high level?
Having said that i dont know who could really take over, dangerfield soon but not quite yet, thommo if he could keep last weeks form up for the rest of the year.
Also VB has the worrying back injury that i think may not go away permanently

Your Captain should be your best player, if he possesses those leadership skills.

If he doesn't, then you look at your better players who do.

I agree with what was said earlier. If VB gets the nod (which he will) he'll be our captain for years. Could you imagine the captain being demoted and another captain taking over. Doesnt happen. He usually stays captain until he retires or is about to retire. With there only being about 3 years age difference between the two that doesnt leave Danger with much time.

I just cant imagine enough of the playing group saying about 2 years 'sorry VB but we actually want Danger to lead us. You can step down'. Some might have the balls to vote that way but it would be a tough pill to swallow coming from your peers.

For this reason alone maybe its better if Rutten or Thomo take the reigns for the interim. Although I cant see Thomo doing it as he isnt even in the leadership group.

I hope our leadership group starts to take a different shape next season.

Who would be your 7 or 8 leaders?

VB
Symes
Knights
Maric
Danger
Rutten
Stevens? (dont see why he is)
Doughty (they'll keep him in there if he plays on)

Future leadership team:

Danger
Davis
VB
Knights
Symes
Maric
Otten
