Who will step up?

With Scully gone it's obvious that we need to turn another one of our midfielders into an elite player, I think that realistically we only have four that COULD do it.

Blease; could very well step up and become a pack bursting, gut running playmaker. The club might prefer to keep him off the back flank however.

In my view, it's unlikely to be Blease anytime soon.

Morton; can he get his shit together and become the player he should be?

In my view, he won't.

Sylvia; is already capable of elite performances, an elite season for him would be one where he averages 25+ possessions and over a goal a game.

In my view, this is a good chance of happening with another full pre season into our midfield group.

Grimes; if he can stay on the park, I think that he could become and excellent midfielder for us. He's courageous, a bigger body and very composed.

Grimesy is my pick.

Any other views and/or suggestions?

We shouldn't bank on the compensation to provide our 'replacement', draft picks are speculative. We need to create an excellent player with what we have.

There are a some outsiders such as Tappy, Jetta, Evans and Watts.

They are outsiders for a reason, but all played some part of their junior footy as a mid.

what about Gysberts, he's already showed more than Scully, 2 more seasons in the gym and he could be anything.

Gysberts immediately came to mind as well jtr, but it won't be in 2012. He's got a lot more physical development to do that Scully, and he's had worse injury problems, and no where near the tank. Still, he can rack up the possessions and use them better than Scully.

I thought Gys was a given, sorry I didn't put that in. That's also why I didn't put Trenners or McKenzie in there.

I meant from outside the current main midfield group.

Blease and Grimes; backline

Sylvia; mainly up forward

Morton; **** knows!!

Gysberts will be a Pendulbury like clearance player down the future interms of his inside work, he just needs to become elite at the outside game

I think for mine its Petterd, he has a cat like balance about him in the midfield and he generally makes good decisions, needs a bigger body but he reminds me of a young Stevie J.

Tapscott also to get more time in the midfield along with Jetta

For mine i like Grimes staying in the back half, he really settles the back half and i love the leadership he gives the HB line

Kel Lawrence is more the small forward we are looking for I think.

Scully played a lot on the wing this year, so I'm voting for Morton.

We all know he is talented enough. Give him the wide open spaces of the G and make someone chase him, rather than the other way round.

However as far as the midfield stepping up goes, for me it has to be Sylvia. he improved his consistency this year, but didn't reach the peaks he has previously. We need him to be consistently getting 25 touches. If he can average 25 touches and a goal a game he will win a brownlow, because his possessions have that much impact.

We need to draft another gun mid with our first pick or the first compo pick if we take it IMO. We can sugarcoat our situation by speculating who will step up but we are short now by 1 elite mid. Even Richmond are passing us by in this area and the midfield is still the most important part of the ground.

We also need a quality small crumber up forward and perhaps a big body as well. To a degree with the right coach a small crumber can be manufactured (we've been quite neglegent here for too long) although I'm not against getting 1 in the ND.

All I want to say is that Sylvia BETTER stand up. He's our most talented, it's about time he becomes our best player.

Are we prepared to wait for more players to develop into elite midfielders? From what I hear, he would still need a few years to become elite.

We need quality, now. Enough with selecting kids with talent and potential, we need bigger bodies. We need to start winning, period. If that means Fevola, and using picks (and hopefully Ross) to lure a big name.

The kids have no confidence. That will only happen when we start winning.

Or give it to Sylvia and really motivate him to step up and make a stand next year. Give the 12 to Jack Viney if he wants his father's number.

Hopefully the whole list!

individuals to break it open,

Grimes - into the midfield could be epic imo, body is the issue but i think he could instantly rival what Moloney does.... he was a midfielder before a half back, and is HARD

A big pre-season and i will have high hopes for Trengove, Gys and Grimes in the middle, also Blease
