Now that unfortuantely we have lost jimmy clement becuase of family committments who is going to take that position and make it his own.
We have a few contenders, shannon cox, harry obrien ?Who else can play repelling footy and look after the talls and small forwards?

You already named the blokes most likely- Harry O and Cox. Wakes is still going around again as well so we still have options. And Brown will be slowly groomed for that CHB position.

since when does a CHB need to worry about smalls as well as talls?? surely thats the job of small defenders and flankers???? i know clement was versatile, but still...

id say anthony and obrien will fight it out for CHB as brown is more a FB for me, but hard to say this early on.

Firstly, O'Brien, then players like Cox and Anthony will be contesting for it.

players in the back line don't play specific positions any more it is more about match ups the coaches want. eg presti on john brown where ever he plays in the forward line

Clement wasn't our CHB. Clement was our 3rd key defender and matched up on anyone. Presti and Wakelin were our FB/CHB combo. O'Brien showed a lot at CHB last year. I think Cox, O'Brien and Goldsack can all fill the hole of Clement and Wakelin.

Well my philosophy is that there is no such thing as a CHB and therefore Clement was not CHB and Harry O, Wakelin and Cox will not be CHB's either.

For me its a case of bigs, smalls and 3rd talls (mediums) and they man up on the opposition player best suited to them no matter where they stand in the forward 50 arc.

If your talking about a Clement replacement I'd say Cox and Harry O are capable and JA is being groomed to be capable in the near future.

I reckon the game has changed - you no longer need a big CHB and a big Full Back. We rarely played Wakes and Presti together.

O'Brien seems to be the one, although I think Brown will play his best footy here.

I think Presti and Wakelin will share full back duties, with Anthony getting his chance eventually.

I think this is spot on. Not many teams have 2 hulking key position forwards.

I think Wakes and Presti will both play whenever we face those type of teams. At least initially. I expect to see JA and N Brown get games this year. Harry O played well in 2007 on the leading forwards (Lucas, Reiwoldt) but would struggle on the monsters like Brown, Gehrig etc.

horses for courses boys.

Against sides with multiple key forwards we will need a different defensive 'suite' to when we play sides like the Bulldogs as an example...

Cox and Goldy to a certain extent and maybe Maxwell are probably the only 3 that come to mind that can play tall or small. Having said that, if someone like Richmond switch Deledio forward, I still have no idea who we would match up on them.

Sorry but moving slightly off-topic retiring because of 'family commitments' really pisses me off somehow... Sure, family comes first and all that jazz but we are talking about playing football, we're not talking about going to war or anything serious.

I'm sure Collingwood would let him, being an elder statesman on the playing list who they can trust, only come down to the club to train once a week and the rest he can do on his own time, and then come to the games. He wouldn't be the first player to come to an arrangement like that, in fact it's not all that uncommon.

There is billions of mothers and fathers who would love to spend more time with their families but they are roped into full-time work for the better part of their lives but they can't just pull up stumps to spend more time with their families. Unless they want to spend that time inside a cardboard box!

So while Jim was a good servant of the Collingwood Football Club something inside me is a little peeved that he left us in the lurch retiring at the same time as Bucks when his body was still ok, even though he had his troubles this year.

I even think he used the family spiel as it is a little more palatable than I can't wait to get out of these black and white stripes and into my black and white business suit...

He can be a business hotshot for 40+ years if he wants to but he only has 2-3 more years where he could be an elite footballer and he has passed up a tremendous chance to do what Nathan Buckley pushed himself to breaking point to do and now can only dream of coaching a premiership whereas Jimmy seems to have meandered off as if it means nothing.

Each to their own but to me I'm a little disappointed in the bloke... Am I wrong? :(

I think what had happened was that jimmy spent a lot of time on the sidelines this year when he was injured,he realised that the younger players like goldsac and obrien did step up and with his personnal problems within his family he probably thought this was the year to retire especially after we lost to geelong in the preliminary final.
He really made the decision based on two factors,A) That the younger brigade has stepped up.
B) Spending time with his family is more important than playing another 2 years of footy.I believe someone in his family is ill so the story goes.

From Presti, Wakes, Harry O, Goldy or out of left field, Bryan.

Cox has apparently come back to pre-season looking like he's been on a turtle meat diet and is struggling. Disappointing as the kid certainly has talent.
