Why are behind posts shorter than goal posts?

It makes it easier to identify which set of posts you should be aiming to get the ball between?

Seriosly it's probably as simple as that. I rememebr playing as junior and when you would have all 4 posts the same height it is easy to get disorientated and aim for the wrong side when your having to get rid of the ball quickly.

A few people would run in and kick open points back in the juniors.

I remember seeing the same thing a few times as well. When you have all 4 posts the same height it's easy to get lost as to which post is which when you have to make a quick decision

Trick question. They don't have to be. Only the minimum height is specified. 6m for goal posts, 3m for behind posts. So behind posts can be taller than goal posts.

The posts at AAMI are pretty close in height.

Compared to say, Waverley

But those shots are from completely different eras. I seem to recall that back in about 2004 all goal posts were replaced with taller posts... due to the controversy at the time about incorrect decisions, etc. The existing goal posts in turn replaced the behind posts.

So I believe that the behind posts in that pic of AAMI Stadium are the old goal posts. I also think the height difference between the posts is about the same now at the various AFL grounds around the country. The difference is substantially smaller than it ever used to be, like say in the Waverly picture which is pre-height change.

Did you also know that the 2 posts on the furthest side from the main cameras(i.e one goal and one point post) are 2 and 3.2cm taller respectively then the 2 closer to the main cameras.

This is so the TV angle looks like the posts are even from the boundary line, and gives the look on T.V a better 'feel'

Which is why a lot of ovals here in SA have red behind posts - a win for common sense I'd have thought.

Probably why Blighty kicked that famous 'open point' in his days at Arden Street. ;)

In the SANFL the behind posts are painted red .
This further differentiates between the two areas .
IMO this should be the norm , so when watching TV
you can differentiate the goalposts in a close up .
