If you look at most of the phantom drafts nearly all of them have us picking up Johnstone at 10, but I just can't see it happening we have been adding key forwards for the last few years just give them the time to develop they need very few key forwards happen overnight. Why would we waste our top pick on picking up another forward in case what we already have doesn't, we need to add another gun midfielder or two. If Shoenmakers is available at 28 yeah go ahead but with ten we definitely will get a quality midfielder.

Because people see a team (team not club) without key forwards and see a key forward from that same state and put two and two together and come up with five.

I will be absolutely shocked if we draft Johnston completely disregarding BF's expectations.

If a quality key forward is available, I would encourage us to grab him with pick ten. We have quite a few young and developing mid fielders. We should still find a pretty handy mid with our second round pick.

Regardless of whether we need an early pick forward or not, Craig has said we will be trying to get one, which is why D&T have figured that if we're going to go for anyone it will probably be the local lad.

Of course, the reality is that we have never shown a tendancy to go local for our first rounders if we don't believe the local lad is the "best available" in the category we're looking at. I also don't believe we'll take Johnston with our first pick but a different KPP wouldn't surprise me.

That being said, I'd be happiest with a gun midfielder instead :)

I disagree, we need to go for the best player available and this will likely be a midfielder

IMO you can never have too many class midfielders, Vince, VB, Thompson, Radar, Proplyzia, Dangerfield and D-Mac is a solid core, however we need to add more class to this group

Key forwards will be available later in the draft and our history of picking talls with early picks is not good

I still think this KPP with first pick thing might be a huge bluff.

If a Hartlett or Sidebottom were to fall to 10 i'd expect Craig and Rendell to jump on them in a second.

Agreed.
Alot of people in their phantom drafts have atleast one of them sliding; and I am sure we will get one of them if they slide.

What we are sorely missing is a good small forward with pace. With Tippet and Walker set to be key targets (and with fingers cross, Sellar too). our key forwards look good. Jacky is a possibility to fill this role but I would be looking to take Yarran with our 1st pick. He already looks to have the body size to make an immediate impact.

Well AFAIK, he's been playing in the League side for Swan Districts(?) for atleast a year and been averaging 3 goals a game, IMO he is definitely a player we should be looking at. IMO just ticks a number of boxes that we need ticked.

As for Johnston, its not suprising that so many have us picking him up at 10. For the vast majority of draft enthuisists on the D&T board, as has been noted they see Adelaide with need of a KPF and see that LJ is from SA and feel that no further thought is required. When in reality this couldn't be further from the truth.

However, having said that, FWIK about him, which is admitedly very little, I wouldn't be dissapointed if we picked him. He is rated by some as the 2nd best KPF in the draft, plays the lead up CHF role very well, is a strong contested grab, isn't a tweener type like Sellar was, is a decent kick and is fairly athletic. If he is, as such rated by Rendell as the best available, I would have no problems with us drafting him, because I know it wouldn't be because he was a KPF from SA, that would just be a bonus.

Oh and Crow Magnum Man, if we did draft a KPF with our first rounder, it wouldn't be a waste. Whilst we have added 3 longer term KPF options in the last 2 years and I agree they take their time, but we can't rely on them making it. Sellar for a start has shown very little, Tippet has the big shadow of the GC over him and Walker IMO will develop into more of a roaming forward than your typical FF or CHF. Whilst all may turn out for the best, we must have a long term contingency plan for if all doesn't turn our as we'd like.

At the end of the day, nothing beats a star player, no matter where he plays, hence the "best available" policy with 1st and 2nd rounders, now unless you have a major weakness that is of far greater importance to any other area, you stick to it. At the moment I see our list being relatively balanced in this respect, another KPF would be great but then so would a midfielder, or a small forward, even a quality defender.

Because most Phantoms are just copies of the one before it.
I would not go that Far but the Mostly Very Close to One Another with a Few Changes

Nope, most bigfooty phantom drafters have seen perhaps 5 - 10 of the players in their draft play and hence must copy everyone elses to be able to scrounge out a whole draft (A certain Adelaide poster comes to mind).

Having said that, there is some real quality on the D & T Board such as Weaver and Snoop Dogg.

Well I agree with that a Bit, When I do my Mocks I do look at others and Get Info there and Some pick will be the same.

Weaver is Gone from the Board but Snoop Dog has putten up his Mock:thumbsu:

Personally I wouldnt use our first pick on Johnstone. Id prefer Mckernan, he's the right size, has sure hands and the kid can play. Having said that from what ive read its North Melbourne or bust for him....

As many have said, most people see Adelaide as needing a KPF, see Johnstone as one of the best KPFs in the draft and view it as a natural match (given that he's from SA).

All indications from the club are that we WILL be going with a KPF with our first draft selection. There's just no guarantees that it will be Johnstone. Other names frequently mentioned are Lisle, McKernan and Trengove. I would not be the least bit surprised if the name called were one of these three.
