Why 07 will be different.
- In 06, we had an ordinary, interrupted pre season with the departure of our 'fitness guru'. Then he went out and supposedly 'gave away' a whole lot of information on the team... This year, we have signed an unproven, yet young head of fitness. Much has been said of the positives of this signing, and much has been said of the negatives. One positive that I can see that has not been mentioned, is that he is the same age as most of the players. + or -? I guess it remains to be seen, but whatever the case, he will be better than that loser that left.
- A new captain, and one who demands a lot more respect, not just from his players, but from the rest of the competition.
- Certain players have realised how close to the scrapheap they are. ie. nobody wanted S.Johnson, and little interest was shown in J.Kelly (a couple of players who have developed inflated egos over the past few years). It is either 07 or bust for those boys. The same could be said for a lot of other players who have fallen under increased criticism.
- The signing of Balme and Sanderson would add a lot to the club. Balme has coached at senior level, so he knows what its all about. The signing of Sanderson is like signing a non-playing veteran. Not long out of the playing fracas, Sando will definately be a role model to a lot of the young players.
- At the beginning of last year (after winning the Wizard Cup), Thompson must have felt untouchable. Few people would know better than he, that the list he has at his disposal is one of the most talented lists in the AFL at present. With his future on the line, he will be pushing the list to realise its potential. Half hearted efforts will not be accepted.
To sum up, as I said previously:
Last year, Geelong began the off season thinking they were king ********. Everyone agreed with them. This year, Geelong still know they're good, but everyone else has written them off. Cats have a point to prove this year, and they will prove it.
