Why Hawthorn?

I think the option of going to Hawthorn would be attractive for two reasons:

1. The premiership window is still well and truly open, and will be for a few seasons yet.

2. Hawthorn are one of the few clubs who actually try to improve their list by being active in trade week. They would know there's a real chance of the deal being done, not like at other clubs who sit on their hands playing hard ball, waiting for a bargain.

Frankly it's because they're a very good side who probably "stole" a flag in 08, so people assume they're past it.

Their window has never been more open, with some luck (injuries) they'll EASILY be top 2.
We did not steel 2008. We pressured the cats so they couldn,t kick straight, and also they never touched the ball without a Hawk on their hammer. We won that game fair and square and deserved it . We were premiers and well deserved.
A new dynasty is arriving , only the great Hawks can do it.

This is it. Their recent history of drafting and player development has been pretty average, with the exception of the Buddy and Roughy lot, so they have to steal from other clubs mostly with underhanded tactics. ;)
Some what fair comment, but we've been pretty spot on in mid second and third around picks.. actually pretty darn impressive :D

Ah, the old 'dynasty' call... always good for a bump in a couple of years...

Gibson..... it is fitting really that the failed campaign in 2011 was the result of him being not up to the task of filling the role the Hawks desperately wanted him to fill.

You could say that is sweet sweet karma.

Best finals player Hawthorn 2011 Josh Gibson.

B&F Runner up 2011 HFC Josh Gibson.

I'd say he has performed above the role he was expected to fill.

The key positions were for Stratton and Gilham. In their absence he has stood up exceptionally.

It depends what they wanted Gibson for. If they truly wanted him to stop the big apes, he didn't do that... but why would anyone expect him to, at his height?
He's been very good, though.
Personally I think the plan was to find probably only one really big ape to go on the dominant, 6'5"+ marking type, and run the better two (Stratton/Gibson) - giving away a little bit of height - on the worse, if not smaller, forward. Similar to how St K use Dawson (Cats Lonergan) pretty much as a grunt and get Fisher (Scarlett) a bit more freedom

Obviously they haven't found that grunt, yet, altho Shoe is looking better.

Good post Slattery. Fairly good assessment.

However, contrary to popular belief, he was close to our best (if not our best) against Geelong. Aside from 1 goal where Hawkins tossed him aside, he played well. Shoe was comfortably beaten as the other key back but Gibson certainly wasn't.

He destroyed Sydney and then had a good game against the Pies before Cloke got the better of him in the last. Hardly a disgrace.

That stacks up well against any of the gorillas.

All that being said, he would have played as a 3rd tall, rebounding defender but for injuries. The reason he was so close to AA was because he had to play the key back spot by necessity and did that well while still providing valuable rebound.

Our B&F and finals award is a reflection of how our match committee assessed his ability to perform the roles he was asked to.

Hawthorn got pick 16 for Williams right?

And could have kept it yeah?

Hawthorn gave pick 9 and 16 for Burgoyne?

As usual your one eyed posting makes you look pretty stupid.

"The deal also sees Hawk forward Mark Williams sign a three-year deal with Essendon, and Bomber Jay Nash move to Port Adelaide.

The Power also receive two first-round draft picks: No.9 (from Hawthorn) and 16 (from Essendon, on-traded by Hawthorn).

Geelong, the fourth club involved in the trade, has parted with draft pick 33 in exchange for three additional picks. The Cats took draft selections 40 and 56 from Port Adelaide, and 42 from Essendon.

In a further exchange of draft picks, Essendon receives No.24 (from Port Adelaide), and Geelong's 33."

Your club was involved in this trade so you should have known better.

On traded by Hawthorn. you could have had pick 16 for Mark Williams, but you gave it away.

2 first round picks for Burgoyne, wouldn't even do that in a supposed weak draft like this year.

Seeing as you are a little slower than the average bear, I'll break it down for you in the simplest way possible.

We gave Port pick 9
We gave Essendon M. Williams
Essendon give Port pick 16
Port give Essendon pick 24

Unless port were going to gift us pick 24 for nothing, Essendon were never going to give us pick 16.

Trolls belong in Bay 13 - please keep your idiotic comments in there.

Thanks Bender saved me the time of having to simplify something not overly complicated.

Essendon were the ones that gone done in this trade. They got pick 16 from St Kilda for Lovett and used it as part of the above trade. They were miles in front on that but found a way to end miles behind.

not that StKilda looked too good picking up Lovett ............

Gibson was probably not invited to save him from the ridicule he copped at the B&F night by the club and his team mates. :p

As to Gunston, a mad Essendon supporter wants to go and put on the brown and gold jumper on, you would have to question the calibre of the bloke's character. :p

Hale is the perfect example of a top bloke who is and will always be welcome at our club. He was given the option of staying but no guarantee on senior game time or looking for better opportunity elsewhere. We were open with him and he was with us, he didn't receive an sms while on holiday that he would be traded after making a commitment to him.

That is the kind of character Gibson has. Nobody gave him the time of day, we gave him the chance as a rookie and told him he was a part of the future of the club but chose to jump ship in the hope he could jump on a bandwagon, it is fitting really that the failed campaign in 2011 was the result of him being not up to the task of filling the role the Hawks desperately wanted him to fill.

The mind boggles at this summary.

With Hawthorn : Play in a preliminary final and next year, be part of a side that is widely recognised as a potential top 4 or even top 2 side with a realistic crack at a flag.

With North Melbourne : play in front of 500 supporters at home games and get paid less than a World Vision sponsored child. Take part in Kangaroo membership ads that have the slogan "For just a dollar a day, you can end the suffering."

Yes.....karma. Bitten him on the a$$

Really , why is it then that on your own board you want the vanilla players Smith ,Savage or Suckers in return for Gillies....
Feel free to post ya 25 and under side....;)

I've taken the liberty to do this on DanA's behalf,

here goes..

D. Menzel (20) ... M.Brown (21) ... ?
S. Motlop (20) ... T.Hawkins (23) ... N.Vardy (20)
S.Hogan (23) ... M. Duncan (20) ... ?
T.Hunt (20) ... T. Gillies (21) ... T. Varcoe (23)
? ... H.Taylor (25) ... ?

Rucks
T. West (23) ... J.Selwood (23) ... A.Christensen (20)
Interchange
D.Simpson (22), ?, ?, ?

Granted, I'm struggling to make a full 22, but i have refrained from dipping into names who will probably play some games next year, but are yet to play senior footy despite having pretty decent wraps about them.

Despite the fact that non-Geelong fans might not know much about a few of these guys, the fact that they've been able to still play games despite the strength of the senior team over a long period says to me that their up-side is possibly higher than most young kids on other lists who may have gotten games a touch easier. Brown and Motlop got long-term injuries in their first or second games and are still fighting their way back as is Hogan after illness.

In the cases of Duncan/Christensen/Menzel/Hunt/Vardy, they were at various times keeping out multiple premiership players. There haven't been many gifted games at Geelong in the last few years.

There might be a few gaps, but I'll still take this line up going into the future :D

Clearly players are keen to go because Hawks are approaching them even if they are under contract for another season or more and buttering them up with promises of deals and game time

Nothing to do with having a young list right in its window with some holes to fill in the team...

Well Richmond is the same thing.

Ivan Maric wants Richmond, and last year Houli + Grigg want Richmond.

We got Hardwick/Smith from the hawks, so maybe it's something in their water.

The issue being that players who want to be traded to Richmond are usually no good yet Richmond jump at them anyway.

So much win McPhil, so much win :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Yes, that too.... but most of the prep work has been done ahead of Hawthorn talking to the 'owning' club, so if they already have the player keen to leave then a lot of the hard work is done and they just have to achieve the right deal

Bit cheeky, though...

Bruest (21)...Ruff (24)...Whitecross (22)
Gunstan (20).. Buddy (24)...Ellis (23)
Smith(22)...Lewis (25 )....Savage (21)
Birch (23)... Shoey(20)...Stratton (22)
Poppy (23)....Lisle (21 )....Suckers (23 )

Rucks..Baily(24)...Shiels (20 )....Rioli (22)
Inter..Young (25)...Murphy (24 )...Cheney(22).. Lowden (21 )
Not inc are our over 25s or under 21s bar Lowden who will play games next yr.......Bar full back the side is strong every where so the windows open for some time .........that why plaers want to come too HAWTHORN...:thumbsu::thumbsu:
With day ta go of trade week , i expect we will fix the FB spot.....;)

Gee that is a vanilla team.

Buddy is a once in a generation player, but take him out and that would be one of the poorest 25 and under teams going.

The Hawthorn drafting from 05-06 will haunt them in the next few years, as this is when these kids will start to blossom.....no surprises that guys like Pendles, M.Murphy, Selwood are now pushing up in the best players in the game conversations!!

2005 - Ellis, Dowler, Birchall, Bailey, Munston, T.Tuck - this was supposed to be the super draft that set Hawthorn up for their 'dynasty'. Currently looks as though only Birchall will be a 200 gamer.

2006 - Thorp, Renouf, J.Morton, J.Kennedy, Moss - all likely to give Hawthorn 0 in 2012

To only have Birchall as a lock (Bailey injury prone) is hardly the kind of return you would hope for.

The Hawks have since been smart as they realised that Hodge, Mitchell and Sewell are in their peak years now, so they added mature bodies to have a crack before it is too late for them.

Instead of going for kids, they drafted mature bodies like Pop and traded for senior blokes like Gibson, Hale, Bruce etc as they will offer more in the next couple of years than any 17-18 yr old kid will.

Plenty rests with Roughy, Hawks seem very confident he will come back and be able to still have the athleticism that made him such a dangerous player....but gee if he struggles the Hawks bubble could burst pretty quick smart as Hodge, Sewell, Burgonye, Mitchell, Gilham, Gibson, Guerra will all be 28+ in 2012...all extremely vital players in the current team

@doppleganger

Might help to actually watch FEW hawthorn games if your going to criticize, Poppy Stratton Lewis Bruest Shiels Rioli Ruff Smith...ellis and young (if fully fit) nothing vanilla about them maybe neapolitan BUT defiantly not straight vanilla.
