I was just wondering, why are Footscray and North Melbourne no more? And don't the kangaroos still mention North Melbourne in their club song?

they are still north and footscray.

western and northern are just "stage" names, a ploy to get more supporters.

footscray is a "spot the aussie" location really, so i think they thought these people dont follow afl, we are better off calling ourselves western so we represent the entire western suburbs rather than just foot-a-scray

north melbourne, probably similar reasons. not really sure

Footscray went to widen the appeal in the Western suburbs when Fitzroy died, North Melbourne went in an ill fated attempt to make the club more nationally appealling. The Roos still mention North Melbourne because it was an unpopular move they probably with they hadnt undertaken.

Not to alienate previously the Canberra supporters and now the prospective Gold Coast ones.

It is North Melbourne Football Club, always has been, always will be. We are as much the Kangaroos as Adelaide are the Crows.

You can't notice it from my avatar logo but it says North Melbourne Football Club under the Kangaroos name.

Pffft, that might be the case now but isn't 'KANGAROOS' written on your 1999 cup?

but on the team fixtures for example Adelaide is always listed as Adelaide, but I never see North Melbourne, just Kangaroos.

Thats the year our name changed from North to KANGAROOS and thats why it had kangaroos on it.

Incorrect! The cup actually reads:
Australian Football League
1999 Premiership
Won By
North Melbourne Football Club
(2 small lines of writing, too small from the photo i have),I would guess 'trading as'
Kangaroos

How many games do the Crows play outside of Adelaide? Zero? ;)

Footscray changed their common name to Western Bulldogs, we did to Kangaroos and Hawthorn changed to Tasmanian Hawks.

I assume consultant firms surveyed people about how they would feel if a club played games in their area with their existing suburbian name or if they changed the name to a more neutral name and probably the neutral name got a lot more support.

Our president never calls us Kangaroos, always calls us NMFC, he doesn't like playing outside of melbourne, the name changes, etc but we are committed to this process for the short-term.

If and when return to Melbourne on a full time bases I am sure we would request the AFL go back to using NMFC rather than just using Kangaroos.

The song etc was changed to Kangaroos but all that stuff was reverted back to North Melbourne. The only thing left is just referring to the name as Kangaoors for consistancy I would assume.

Im sure they just brought that in a few months ago. You have been known solely as the Kangaroos for about 7 years before that.

No you are not.

Explain why north are listed as 'Kangaroos' in official fixtures while Adelaide are listed as Adelaide.

Hawthorn are Hawthorn, the bloody Tasmania part is a SPONSORSHIP

like hungry jacks, or ford, or emirates.

Jesus, is it that difficult a concept?

yes they are "north melbourne football club limited"
trading as "the kangaroos"
abn - 21006468962

think of an actor's stage name, it's not their real name but it's what they work under. it does'nt eliminate their real name though, that still exists

It's difficult for GC Roos supporters to grasp. They're going to be a bottom 4 team for many years to come:(

Because Adelaide only play home games in Adelaide, we play games interstate.

Our club is the NMFC, it is a registered company, we just trade as Kangaroos. Is this too hard to understand?

If Adelaide played home games in various states and wanted to expand their appeal in different states they would more than likely choose a name other than Adelaide to promote the club in different states.

So Collingwood has sold all the naming writes for their club to Emirates? I dont think so. No club has done that to a sponsor since Geelong was called Whiskers or whatever it was they got into down there.

There is no Hawthorn now, Tasmania has bought the rights to call the club Tasmania Hawks for the period of their agreement.

That argument holds no water.
Plenty of other clubs have played home games interstate (st. kilda, melbourne, hawthorn) and not used their nickname in official fixtures.

That was Garry Hocking not the Geelong Football Club.

Jeff tried to explain it thusly

"Right now our naming rights sponsor is HSBC, so often when you guys (in the media) are reporting us you refer to the HSBC Hawks, but we're transferring that from HSBC to Tasmania and I think a lot of people therefore will refer to us as the Tassie Hawks.

For both clubs it was about expanding support/membership. As late entrants to the VFL they never got the level of support from their geographical base that some of the earlier teams did.
My understanding is North Melbourne with its interstate expansion games first in Sydney but then in Canberra expected more uptake by locals. Obviously it stood a better chance of happening if they weren't named after a Melbourne suburb. The rationale still makes sense playing in Carrera.
Likewise Footscray didn't want their name to link them to one geographical area, but I think in their case as the Western Bulldogs they weren't so much after interstate supporters as having a wider appeal in Melbourne. Given they now play in Darwin and Canberra it probably can't hurt to have changed.
