Will Essendon win the Flag ?

Fess up Bombers fans - you really do think you can win the flag, you just don't want the pressure ! :D

you know it ;)

Easily the Dons should be the first or second favs for 2012, smashed the Blues and destroyed the other teams they have played, should have beaten the Pies as well. I can only see the Eagles and Cats giving them a run. They have some elite players and star young kids not sure who can stop them, not trolling its just the cold hard facts.

sorry mate, Hirdy did it best with the Fab Four article in the HUN. This can only ever be a pale imitation :)

Agree with this, and with their win over geelong last year I can't help but think they are a massive show for the flag.

On Saturday night, if both sides were full strength, Bombers would have no chance.

So we have better depth than you?

Seeing as you won't have Le Cras for the season, possibly not Nicoski and you're without Kennedy for 3 months that doesn't bode well for you.

Further, we saw what happens when a good defender marks Crameri in the Collingwood game. He will be a gun and should improve, but not before the Grand Final.

Bit harsh on Crameri he has beaten good defenders before and due to not having Hurley in the side he wasn't played in is usual high half forward role.

It's worthy of note that Nathan Brown did not have a 4 day break. So while he beat Crameri, he had a distinct advantage in that game.

On the other hand it was a 578 day break, which probably isn't ideal.

The important factor in that is that if we play a West Coast, Hawthorn, Geelong, Carlton, Collingwood and all their star players fire, we'll probably lose.

This pretty much sums it up and is exactly why Essendon won't challenge for the flag this year or in coming seasons. Other than Hurley, there is just no guenuine star power and this especially so in the midfield. In a finals atmosphere I just can't see Essendon's onballers competing at allwith the midfields of Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong, West Coast and even Hawthorn or West Coast. I'd expect all of these sides to easilly account for the current crop of Essendon players. Essendon have a very mid table list that is overachieving atm, as my Grandfather used to say, you can't polish a ****.

It is, he has been good though. You just have to judge these players against their best counterparts of GF quality. I don't mean to single out Crameri, but this is a thread about Essendon. I can at the same time say Dawes would have little impact in a Granny at this stage against a GF quality opponent as well. In fact, Crameri would probably play better than Dawes who has been shocking this year.

Can you name Carltons "star power".
Because Essendon are developing some pretty good players in Crameri, Hurley, Pears, Heppell, Zaharakis and Bellchambers.

Crameri playing as a stay at home ff worked straight into Brown's hands, as he is as strong as anybody in the league, even though Crameri is strong, beating Brown in a wrestle is impossible. Crameri works best when he is allowed to run, as he will either be able to outrun or outmuscle his opponent depending on who it is.

Murphy, Judd, Scotland, Kreuzer, Simpson, Carrazo, Waite, Yarran, Henderson & Betts is a better top end than Essendons by a fair way. Carlton along with Hawthorn & Collingwood have the best "top end" talent by miles.

We obviously have very different definitions of top end talent. Cough Waite, Henderson, Yarran.
Suprised you havent mentioned Geelong in the best top end talent, has hatred of the club affected your decision?
We obviously dont have as much star power as Carlton but we definitely do have some.

Ours and West Coast midfields are quite close in terms of ability. Imo

Watson - Priddis
Stanton - Kerr
Zaharakis - Shuey
Hocking - Selwood
Melksham- Gaff

Yeah and I'm disagreeing with you. I think Crameri is built for finals footy and would perform extremely well unless he is playing as a stay at home full forward.

Edit: that being said I see where you are coming with other players on our list.

That's what the Hawks thought in 2008. We won the one nobody expected us to, and then haven't been able to achieve a flag from 2009-2011 which was our aim.

Don't spend too much time dreaming of the future when it could be all happening right now. I don't think Essendon will win this year, but you never know.

Good post. I'm almost positive we won't snag one this year, and top four is perhaps a stretch - however you never know when you can grab one "before your time."

Essendon can't be thinking "we'll do it when Joey D matures" or "we get that classy inside-out mid."
