true that.... btw why do we keep chanting Best 22, Best 22 ? the reason Hawthorn/Geelong/West Coast have been up so long is that they chant Best 28, Best 28...

Depth is Key and at moment we don't have much

West Coast the side that has made one grand final and have won one spoon in the last 10 years? Depth is important but everyone has there players that are guaranteed starters and that will be Hoskin-Elliott at Collingwood

And the side that could well win it this year...but I agree with about WHE

IF he can stay away from the Injury Bug which he struggle to get rid of at GWS

With the mess that is our forward line it's time to start playing WHE as a permenant forward.

For a start he's one of the only reliable kicks for goal we have and his speed on a lead is damn near impossible to stop.

Yes he can still have patches up the ground but in 2 games I reckon he's played about 20% of total game time inside forward 50. That should be the other away round, should be 80% inside the forward zone, and 20% out.

We need forwards, he's a forward, come on.

I'd like to see WHE, Broomy and Varcoe rotating though HF and wings. Not sold on Phillips yet.

I told you guys this kid is a jet. Go have a look at my posts on pages 3,4 and 5 of this thread.

He's our only good ball user after Pendles and is the only other player apart from Pendles who can find any space out on the ground.

People were questioning paying a second round pick? FMD (but I'll wait until the end of the year to properly gloat!)
I don't think his skill was ever in doubt, it was more his durability.

Has been exactly what you'd want in that linking half forward role so far. 21.5 disposals, 10 marks, 4 inside 50s and 2 goals per game over the first couple of weeks is excellent.

I thought this would be a "consolidation" year for him, to get his body strong and fit, and really wasn't expecting him to produce a whole lot for us until 2018. I expect he'll tire at some point (has never played a full season), but I hope he at least avoids injury so that he can get the miles under his belt.

I reckon we have ok depth. consider who is currently missing from the team. elliot, wells, varcoe, levi, degoey will all plays seniors. that means 5 have to go back to the vfl. consider we've had enough ball to be 2-0 I reckon depth is ok.

Big call after one game especially when that game was Norf

I wasn't even thinking about North... You gotta admit WC will be well in the mix this year, they are stronger this year than last plus that massive advantage they get by playing about half their games in Perth. Anyway....time will tell..

That advantage is cancelled out by the away game travel they do imo.

Yet they can't win at the G. Last time I checked that's where the GF is played

You're kidding right? Depth is the most overrated concept in footy. Chemistry is key and atm we have none.

Yeah, depth is nice but they're not much help playing twos.

I agree with the Chemistry comment. Depth is important to replace injured players and give rest, but a strong spread of top end talent who consistently perform is the nucleus to success.

So you could have a Team Full of Ordinary Players and still win the Flag?

Agree, our depth is very good.
Very even.
But it's drawback is the depth is medium level talent across the board

We are awaiting, if. It happens, the younger medium levels to go up notches.
We'll be ok if it happens, if not, there will be more turn over

I'd suggest our chemistry in the middle is ok, actually quite good

Up forward, that's a whole different matter.

We almost did it in 02 with a sprinkle of top end talent. A group with good chemistry, that buys in to a good game plan and is at least competitive from a talent perspective can go places. We have the talent, but are lacking in the other two areas.

Schraderbrau nailed it we genuinely look like a team that is still finding their way under a new coach which is a disaster this far in, IMO. I'm happy we ditched it as soon as we did, but that we didn't at least try to bed down the three tall forward structure is a sign of a FD that completely undervalues team chemistry. Look at Adelaide yesterday they should be the new premiership favourite, IMO, and they didn't have a single new recruit in their 22 v Hawthorn and Milera was the only bloke under 21. They're a team that has faith in their direction and are masterfully coached after making the tough call on Sando.

With all that in mind WHE coming in and performing the way he has is startling.

And they have a pretty damn good forward line

We have pretty damn good midfield. We've built chemistry through the midfield and low and behold in most matches they get on top. The rest of the ground on the other hand...

Edit: realised I was OTT with a previous post in saying we have none!

Agree here - The team of champions v champion team adage.
I feel that the team at the moments is poised on the edge - ie the last 2 losses will have sapped substantial confidence from this young group.
Staying positive and together is now critical, and my concern is that the leaders and chemistry needed to drive this are an issue, largely due to our youth.
I was hoping Dunn would shore up our much needed leadership stocks and hopefully this will still happen.
As much as I like Schade and think he has potential, Dunn offers leadership which benefits the entire team on game day, and needs to come back.

What is absolutely true is that our performance against the Swan is in many ways going to dictate the rest of the season. If we again can match it with them as we did the WB, then the confidence within the group will probably hold up given we would have played to 2 GFinalist in the first 2 games, with easier teams ahead.
If we happen to win, then the belief will grow dramatically and finally performance will move closer to expectation.
As Maxy once said there comes a time when belief starts to grow and then can't be stopped.

But if we get smashed, we are in for a long season, and the performance v talent of the group will be out of sync.

Yeah in terms of the positivity now the heats gone out of it I only want two changes max and to keep things up internally because we're doing some things well (not enough, IMO, but some still).

Daicos is non-negotiable because he will be a positive focus point regardless of the result, IMO. Then it comes down to fitness between Elliott and Varcoe. I'm still on the Varcoe bandwagon, but losing him was a serious blow because otherwise Blair is out v Richmond so he isn't a guaranteed in.

With that in mind I would keep the focus on what we've done well the past fortnight and emphasise that the Swans are banged up ATM and week between the arcs. We're dominating uncontested ball which is the best indicator of a win in Autumn. The wheel will turn if the coaching group gets the players believing so cool heads hopefully prevail at selection with no knee jerk reactions.

Really getting away from WHE, but I'd love to see Steele forward this week and WHE on the wing because of his ability to break a game open with pace.

Maybe three tall forwards was never our aim, we planned on having Elliott in there with Fas and White/Moore as the two talls. Elliott's injury lingered and Cox was picked on a dry night as the next best set-up.
