Opinion Will we ever see the return of the NEAFL?

There’s no good reason to change the current setup. The Perth and Adelaide teams don’t have to travel and play in decent second tier comps, even if they are intentionally handicapped from being able to win the premiership. The Sydney and Queensland teams get a much better standard for their reserves. The Victorian teams travel less than if it was a reserves comp. The stand alone teams still get to compete in the vfl and allows more opportunities for mature aged recruits than having only top up players would.

I doubt it. A reserves comp for the eastern seaboard makes some sense.

National reserves would be stupid, it wouldn’t be even be fit for the purpose… what is reserves for? Match play for those not selected, limited minutes on injury return for others. You don’t need to be going national for either of those reasons, and it’d actually be potentially harmful in the case of players returning from injury. Travel isn’t a good thing for athletes, it messes with routines and recovery, it’s only done at the top level because it’s necessary for the best to play against the best.

The Vic teams can easily have their own reserves comp. The other 4/5 eastern seaboard clubs can join if they think it’s necessary for the level of play. I wouldn’t be changing WA or SA.
