Eagles puts Woosh contract talks on ice
• Tim Clarke
• February 26, 2009 - 7:42AM
West Coast coach John Worsfold will have to wait until June to begin discussions about extending his contract to coach the Eagles beyond this season.
With the Eagles legend out of contract at the end of this year, speculation has already begun about his future, with the Eagles coming off their worst ever season in 2008.
But as Worsfold enters his eighth season as coach of the team he captained to a premiership, CEO Trevor Nisbett said there was no issue with the stability of the club - and both parties were of a similar understanding about the position.
"There is certainly no issue with stability with John at the helm, and that has always been our case," Nisbett said.
"John and the club will talk mid season, we have been very clear with that on Woosh and he understands exactly what is going on.
"We will probably sit down at the bye and start talking about an extension and how the team is going and how he sees it going."
The Eagles fly out for their now annual trip to Alice Springs - this time to take on Adelaide in a NAB Challenge match on Friday night.
A cluster of key West Coast Eagles players will be injected into the team to play including forward Ashley Hansen, utility Adam Selwood, forwards Mark LeCras and Josh Kennedy, wingman Sam Butler and midfielder Tyson Stenglein.
And Nisbett said that despite the woes of last year, that were compounded by injuries to key personnel, he was confident there was improvement to come from the Eagles - if they could keep their best team on the park.
"We are confident if we can get our best squad on the park and do that consistently we can have a good year, and how much we improve will depend on how well some of our young guys come through," Nisbett told 6PR radio.
"Our members and supporters are aware of that, and when you are coming off four wins (in 2008), absolutely we are hoping for rapid improvement.
"There is a new game style the coaches are trying to implement and the guys are starting to play, and that will take a little bit of time as well."

I agree with the decision by June we should know where or where abouts we will be finishing this year. If we don't win at least 8 games then he should be gone. There are plenty of good coaching options out there who'd want to coach us.

- Mark Williams
- Obviously Neale Daniher, Scott Burns, Peter Sumich would be good options
- Paul Roos
- Damien Hardwick

I think outside the eagles nest would be better for the club.

Regardless of form Woosh will be given an extention till end of 2010 IMO. If we are playing relatively well and have around 5 wins mid season than add a year onto that contract so he finishes end of 2011, If we are looking at finals than he would easily get a 3 year end of 2012 contract.

Whilst I would love to get Paul Roos to our club (don't nec like the way the Swans always play but he certainly seems to get the best out of his players) it would be pretty tough on John to be cut loose after just 2 poor seasons.

That said, it would be great to have some fresh strategies/innovations at the club to build on with our young players. I guess the new look coaching panel will help to bring these this season.

I think you are right here mate and for that to happen then he would have turned things around which is a win win for everyone.

I have no doubt at all the club has told Woosha to change the game plan and get up to speed with the other coaches.
He will be working his hardest to do that. Lets see what happens in the next few months.

Surely you jest?

So after Woosha dragged us out of the misery of the Judge era and took us to our 3rd premiership you'd have him sacked?

I honestly cannot get over the fickleness of some fans. Woosh isn't a player now, he's not going to get worse with age as a player would, so why would you want to get rid of him?

Give him a 2 year extension and see what happens after that. If we're still shit and Woosh hasn't done anything to address then look at other options, but christ, give him a break.

Wasn't sure what you meant here.

"2 poor seasons" means if we have a poor 2009, or poor 2007-2008.

We had a pretty good 2007 considering all the injuries and hiccups (with a full strength side we probably would have made the GF).

I agree with bodazoka, the first half of the season and subsequent talks will probably be used to determine the length of the contract renewal, I just cannot see his position coming under threat this year unless we have 0 wins by the time contract talks begin (and even then.....).

I think Cousins, Judd, Kerr may have had something to do with dragging us out of the Judge era. My confidence in Woosha, Nisbett etc. still has a very long way to go before it's restored after the last few years of off and on field gutlessness. Lets just wait and see.........

Surely you are a troll.

I call shenanigans on your post.

Could say the same about Ablett, Bartell and Corey also Franklin, Hodge and Mitchell...

Totally agree with EagleMan87.The club went through a very trying period in 07/08 off the field.Woosha took us to several finals series in a row plus a flag, nearly 2 flags.
Woosha is an absolute fantastic coach and now has a youthful team to build up again and that won,t happen overnight.
Sign him up now and let's hope he wants to continue with us.We are very lucky to have a guy who is passionate about his team and sticks up for his boys:thumbsu:

Well let's watch Swift,Masten,Naitanui,Brown and co guide us out of the Cousins and Judd era and into an exciting new year.;)

IMO - sign him for another 2 years.

I think Woosha has shown that with his experience gained over the last 10 years of coaching that now he needs to adapt. He knows hes not the best tactically so hes brought someone in, Walsh. He knows he needs someone just out of the game and a person who can advise and groom the midfield so again he brought in Voss first then Burns.

The club has also lightened his load by bringing in the Reverend.

Its not just about Woosha. The coaching staff as a whole are just as accountable for good or bad results.

True. And with so many new faces they need to learn to work together as well.....these things take time.

Yes, I agree with you, particularly with your statement that he's not the best match day tactician, and what he's doing about it.
We need a bit of time to see how the new coaching team develops. In an article after the Collingwood NAB cup game, John said that the coaching group also have to learn to work together as a team.
Time will tell, but in football nothing happens instantly.

It will be interesting to see this "new game plan" that everyone keeps talking about. It seems a bit like Shane Warne's new mystery ball every season. I hope the new game plan is not a rip-off of the rolling zone, because by the time our players are any good at it, it will be superseded. Given our current list, I think we need to adopt a long-term perspective and if re-signing Woosha for a couple of years is the best option, then so be it.

I'm not so sure about our skills coach though. I think we may need to start again there.

I disagree.

Take the 2 best players out of any side in the AFL in the off season and they are going to struggling the next season. Not to mention the all the injuries we had. I dont think our performance had anything to do with the coach.

Woosha should be given a chance to develop the players we drafted in the past 2 years.

If we get to 2011 and blokes like Masten, Ebert, Selwood, Naitanui and Swift have played 60-70 games and we are still sitting near the bottom of the ladder then it will be time to move him on.
