There has been quite a bit of talk on Bigfooty of late of some inconsistencies at the selection table. For eg, Tuck being kept out for an extended period, Post not being given a decent run in the seniors, Connors out / unavailable / injured.

On the other hand, some eyebrows have been raised about Dea coming back into the side so quickly this week, Miller getting games, Hislop getting games, Edwards getting games when he has been a bit up and down etc.

I watched training a number of times this pre-season when I was taking some time off work, and it was pretty obvious watching training that there was a large difference between those that "gave 110%" at training and those that seemed to cruise through and / or muck around alot. For eg, Miller, King, Riewolt and Foley always gave 110% at the training sessions that I attended.

I think that some of the selection decisions (perhaps with the exception of Tuck who does seem to have his papers stamped) are due to matters outside the 120 minute match that the players play each week. I think a lot of it has to do with attitude and effort at training, willingness to follow instructions etc etc. If that is the case, I think we should have a bit more faith in the selection committee to pick the team that rewards the players who are doing the right thing 7 days a week, not just during the AFL or VFL game that week.

Thoughts?

100% agree with u here. Creates a better environment for the future and we will improve quicker. However, the sooner we replace the duds on the list and replace with quality players that give 110% every training session the better we will become :D

I watched the boys for about half on hour earlier this week. I left thinking to myself "God I hope they don't play like that on Sunday". For the most part, the effort was pretty good though I wasn't really focused on that. Most of the guys were working hard to spread, communicate etc.

What worried me was that even in training drills they were still passing to each others feet, too far out in front, missing the target by hand etc. At one point Hardwick had to blow the whistle and remind the player with the ball (senior player) which way he was going.

I have not lost faith in the panel, but I remember when Wallace took over he described the training as a rabble. I hate to say it but that was pretty much my impression too.

I know this team can play well. I just bloody well hope they put it together this week or we might be if deep trouble.

Totally agree Roaring Tiger we do need to show some faith. To Spanish fly ur right too perfect practice makes perfect.

They reckon Gary Ablett Senior wasn't much of a trainer at all and they still picked him every week.

Fev wasn't much of a trainer either...

They are the exceptions to the rule, since they are very talented players, who were able to lead their teams to premiership glory on several occasions, just on talent alone...

Umm, or did they? :o

What in his later years, or when he was a youngster just starting out like our team?

In his younger years it would have been an amazing feat to get him to turn up to training.

Didnt lack confidence did Gary Ablett Snr and as a teenager would have felt that training was for others less gifted.

Ablett and Fevola were gifted but neither had any leadership traits.

Having said that perfect practise makes perfect. We as supporters don't know everything the players are doing. It is vital that players training is cycled from hard sessions to lighter recovery sessions. you can't keep smashing players on the track without giving them some time to freshen up for match days. If you do keep working them too hard they break down/ get sick or both. When you talk elite sport it's a fine line between getting the most and overtraing. Go Tiges

listen nothing surpises me when you see the pathetic performances come the weekend. we need a coach more like gunny highway...when they dont play well on the weekend then it's a 500AM session at stkilda beach followed by sprints up sand dunes with tractor tyres chained to the hips. if these guys are fair dinkum, thats the kinda dedication required to elevate themselves from the breaches for once. But no, just steady as she goes ea session like a holiday camp...pathetic and as they say rubbish in rubbish OUT

Attitude at training is a complete reflection on the coach.... If he cant get them pushing as hard as he can on the training track how can we expect him to do be-able to do it on match day.
