the worst commentating team ive ever seen. I doubt it will get better due to Tens forecast of pathetic shows next year showing 10 could be a bit of trouble financially.

He's not the worst but I've never been a big fan of Lane, whereas I reckon Peter McKenna was a classic, a bit like the Bill Lawry of footy commentators.

Actually, now that Seven have the rights back, I reckon it would be great if for the Heritage Round they brought back all the old commentators, just for a one-off. I'd love to hear the likes of Williamson, McKenna, Landy, maybe even a little cameo from little Lou, just for the nostalgic value of it all. And it would tie in nicely with the "footy's back where it belongs" angle the station is no doubt going to push.

And the greatest commentator of them all should be brought back full time. Who's that you ask? Shame on you - Don Scott!

Never understood why Peter Daicos was give the heave-ho. I thought he was very insightful. Mick McGuane copped a bad rap, too and I always found his special comments to be two steps ahead of the game. I guess the TV and radio networks think we are all dumb so they reckon we should listen to dumb callers.

Totally agree on that as well, their commentary of this years Grand Final was pathetic to say the least, when I watch the DVD of the GF I always put on one of the radio station commentary because Channel 10 pi$$ed me off to much.

Drew Morphett is the greatest hack caller. The 99 Blues v Ess prelim was a classic match but he butched the game with a terrible call. Calling the netball is to good for him.

Could not agree more. In fact half the time he tried to tell jokes which he thought were funny. Shocking commentator thank goodness channel 7 are not looking at him.

As for the people who said Rex Hunt he is one of the better commentators. There are alot worse then him.

I agree LMH. Dwayne Russell is easily the worst commentator going around.

Another 'vote' for Dwane Russell here.

Not a Michael Christian fan either.

Malcolm Blight still seems to have some 'issues' from his time coaching that affect his judgement. Generally he can be too negative about things as well, at times he sounds like he is looking at things like a coach not happy with the way things are going.

I actually like Brereton, and think he works well with the best in the business Cometti. They make a good team, and their little slip ins of references to professional wrestling are quite amusing.

I used to like Sandy Roberts too.....probably just fuelled by his call of Matera's second goal from 50 on the run in the 92' GF.

Dwayne Russell is up there with the best not worst.

As for Eddie - i'll never forget one of the first times i ever heard him call a game of footy, was a Whitten Legends game, prob about 5 years or so ago. He was getting carried away over a charity game FFS. On one occasion the ball was being kicked to BT in the goalsquare, and he was contesting with some 40 year old FB, and Eddie was getting so carried away it was unbelievable!! People watch those games for entertainment, they dont need the game to be pepped up by moronic commentating!!

As for Drew Morphett. Unfortunately hes similar to Peter Landy and Sandy Roberts, in that they were calling a game that they basically knew nothing about. Likewise when they did other sports Morphett/diving, Roberts/tennis and gymnastics, and maybe Landy and rowing although he may have actually know more about that sport than footy!! At least the modern guys who hadn't played the game at an elite level such as Grybas and Jason Bennett actually know a bit about the game and they way it should be called!!

Cometti is a gun and the standard by which all Commentators should measure up to.

He is meticulous, well prepared and doesnt over-cook or over-verbalize the commentary caper.

Also has a sharp awareness of contemporary issues ie. stays abreast of the fads of the day.

As for announcers I hate, well I have to say Ch10 has a pretty poor patch - headed up by Michael Christian. Just dreadful.

Cometti and McAvaney should be a nice mix for Friday nights next season.

I would have to agree with everyone who said Eddie was an absolutely shocking caller, especially of Collingwood games. I'd cringe everytime he'd yell "BUCKLEY!!!!" or "TARRANT!!!" as soon as the ball was in their vicinity. I'm sure if they had a camera in the commentry box the desk would rise everytime those two were near the ball, even with Eddie's hands on the desk!

The worst football commentator ever though would have to be Phil Cleary. I know he doesn't commentate AFL (thank goodness for that) but his continued whinging about aligned AFL/VFL clubs and Geelong's reserves, which is basically what our VFL side is, really irritate the hell out of a lot of people. Just worry about the game in front of you Phil, and save all the complaining about the politics of it for your piddly little column in Inside Football!
