Opinion Young equal or not equal Jones?

How quickly people forget.

Yes Young has been good since coming in, and will hold down full back back for the next decade for us.

However Jones was elite and should have been in considerations for AA spot.

- not sure how you say young is better one on one contest. If I remember correctly Jones won 99 of his first 100 1 on 1 contests last year.

- Jones was a brilliant interceptor.

- Jones better contested Mark.

- Jones was elite for spoils and one %

- agree young has less clangers. Young opts for the much safer options where I think Jones would try more attacking risky kicks that could open up the grand for us but which could also back fire

I think your opinion is being swayed by the overall team success.

Let's not forget Jones held down that key position in a much weaker team. Young has got the advantage of better all round team defence.

Jones and Weiters were isolated for more 1 on 1 inside 50s than any other defenders in the league and absolutely killed it.

Jones would have been more handy for a flag tilt this year and next, however that's not to be and it's fast tracked Youngs development.

Very lucky to have found Young as he is the perfect long term partner for Weiters.
In terms of one on one contest, Jones was not only elite, he was actually the best in the entire competition

See the age article I posted in the list management thread, the club is trying to get him to another club provided we get compensated.

He clearly burnt his bridges at Carlton - or had them burnt

As someone who has thought for a long time that there would have been no hard feelings, the fact we don’t seem interested in re-signing him makes me think you and others were right. In our situation, to not try to re-sign him is a big statement.

We have been very lucky that Young has stepped up in a big way, he’s been great with a lot of improvement in his game left, I hope Lewis can take his game to another level with the hopeful inclusion of a fit theirs tall defender.

I've been a Plowman backer for a long time. He's gone wandering a little bit lately. Used to do it with great effect but lately he's been caught out a little more.

As for the usual suspects thing, can we not do the calling out schtick? The round and round arguments are tedious.
Do you think he might have been instructed to leave his man a bit and play loose looking for the intercept? Maybe this is just him doing that, but he's not very good at it and can't read the play like Weiters or Jones?
You'd think that if he was going rogue and doing it without instruction and it was costing us, he'd be dropped.

100%, considering the outs we have had this year the fact we aren't looking to bring him back is a fairly big indicator the break up wasn't so amicable.

Quite possibly. His timing and judgement seems to be right off.

Young has done great this year, but he's absolutely not Liam Jones.

I think the club looked at it form the point of view that prior to moving him back, he was on the scrap heap earmarked to be delisted with not much interest form other clubs. They gave him the opportunity which he took with both hands an eventually a $500K contract.

Deciding to retire over the covid Jab at a critical time of our rebuild would have gutted the club.

Young is a great player, not yet at Jones' level. Jones was a phenomenal defender prone to the wild brain fart.

Which would I rather have on the list at the moment? Young, easily, for the next 8-10 years.
Great?

Young is comfortably better.

The primary reason?

Much better concentration and ability to structure around.

Jones looked flashy trying to make up 20m of poor positioning game in and game out. Would have been a nightmare to coach defensive structures with.
Is that due to our new defensive structure though?

I admit, this was my first thought as well but if you look at Saad of 2021 and Saad of 2022 they are very different players.

Rather a 23 year old Young to a 31 year old Jones, but not even close...

Jones was an excellent defender in a poor team. Statistically dominant. If he didn't have the stigma of being Liam Jones he'd have been in the AA squad of 40.

In 2020, he was:
  • 1st for intercepts in the competition
  • 1st for spoils in the competition
  • 1st for total defensive 50 one on ones
  • Has lost only 8% of his one on ones, by far the least amongst key defenders. The next best is Lever @ 11.5%

Prone to the odd turnover but Young has a long way to go before he's the equal of Jones.
Excellent summary. The Jones boy could seriously play and Carlton turning him into a defender was a master stroke and he was robbed to not be AA 2020.

He was one of my favorites.

I was so disappointed at the start of year when it became apparent we had lost him but we have covered him remarkably well
and Young has stepped up very nicely.

Still got a lot to do to fill the spot fully but he may well get there.

Thanks Doggies...... (for both of them) WOOF WOOF.

Would actually be quite fitting if Liam found his way back to the kennel, Lord knows they need KP,s.
