Not sure how to post links and quote it, etc :)

But Stephen Coglino (?) is considering boycotting the draft because he doesn't want to play for GWS. A top 3 pick, will be picked up by the Giants and seems a bit childish.

Toughen up. Kids do the same trip each year!

Seems a bit silly if true, why not go to GWS for 2 years, then just walk out on them if your aren't happy, or even seek a trade after 1 year (which GWS would be mad to refuse if they knew the kid wanted out anyway).

If he is happy to cop losing atleast 80k in the first year alone (assuming he plays a atleast a few games).....fair enough he really doesnt want to move to sydney

ONE of the AFL's brightest young talents is considering boycotting the draft because he doesn't want to play for Greater Western Sydney.
West Australian prodigy Stephen Coniglio is weighing up whether to defer his nomination for 12 months in what would be a major snub for the expansion club.

Coniglio, an inside midfielder blessed with speed and skill, is captaining the WA side at the under-18 national championships and was part of the AIS squad that toured Europe in April.

He booted four goals for premier Swan Districts in last year's WAFL grand final and is considered a top-three pick at November's national draft.

The Giants have selections one, two, three, five, seven, nine, 11, 13 and 15 in the first round and are almost certain to swoop on the 17-year-old.

But it's understood Coniglio and his parents aren't keen on him moving across the country to play for the fledgling club and may hold him back.

How petulant can you be? He is going to get paid a handsome amount of money to play football, something that many can only dream of achieving. Just suck it up and play for the team that picks you.

Is there an article to support this? It would be a massive shame if footy lost him 'cause he didn't want to go to GWS. Surely he could play a couple of years there and request a trade if he felt so strongly?

I think it tends to happen more with those likely to be taken right at the top of the draft. I remember Cotchin really didn't want to come to the Eagles either, Headland didn't want to leave WA, etc.

The ones who only just make it are happy to play anywhere.

On one hand it's good to read of a kid who's willing to say what many others probably are not willing to, but at the same time, the draft is a lottery, and part of being an 18yr old talent is that you can't really assume you'll get to where you want to go.

I'm not sure he has to 'suck it up', but boycotting the draft isn't the right way to go about it either, especially talking about it publicly this far out.

Certainly a hard decision for the boy.

Maybe WCE/Freo could do a deal with GWS for a top 3 pick

Yep, if I was GWS I would put the 3rd overall selection on the table and sell it for a bounty. Buyers will be lining up.

Some of the stuff in this thread is ridiculous.

'Soft?' ... 'Petulant???' ... 'Arrogant?'

I don't blame him at all for wanting to move to a new club, especially considering they don't appear to have a 'marquee' signing as of yet to guide the youngsters. (For those who say 'lolwutaboutScully'... seriously, grow up... not a marquee signing no matter how good he could be.. if he even decides to sign)

I don't doubt he would be happy to play for any other club, just not GWS.

It has to be more than 'he doesn't want to move, etc.'

Reading between the lines, surely there must have been some conflict between him and GWS in some way.

I hope he boycotts the draft, comes back in 3 years and gets picked up with the Giant's first rounder :thumbsu:

Yeah it's a bit of a head scratcher. Similar to the rumours about Sam Day last year.

If he boycotts this year, chances are next year's bottom dwellers are going to be GWS, GC and Port, which maybe Brisbane and inevitably two or three other teams will take a tumble. There's only two WA teams so the chances of one of them being in a position to pick him up next year is still only about 10%.

The way I read that article is not that he isn't prepared to travel - it's just that he's not prepared to travel to GWS.

Good luck to him - he's not compelled to nominate - and he's well within he right to do it.

Best case scenario is he's playing for WA on the WACA in a few years
