2010: Red Dead Redemption
2011: Arkham City
2012: Mass Effect 3
2013: GTA V
2014: The Binding of Isaac Rebirth
2015: The Witcher 3 (followed by Rocket League)
2016: Uncharted 4
2017: Super Mario Odyssey
2018: God of War
2019: Modern Warfare
2020: The Last of Us 2 (a very close 2nd to Final Fantasy 7 remake followed by Doom Eternal)
2021: Terrible year... Hades as it was released on PS4 then.
2022: Elden Ring

Some obvious choices with a couple indies sprinkled in there. Some really strong years, but I struggled to pick a standout in 2021, 2019 and 2014.

2011 and 2019 were actually the toughest years to pick for me. Skyrim vs Arkham City and RE2 vs Control aren't easy choices to make.

For the purposes of this list I haven't considered Mass Effect: LE or Control: UA and just considered their original releases instead, so as to not double up.

2010: Mass Effect 2
2011: Batman: Arkham City (HM: Skyrim, Deus Ex)
2012: The Walking Dead (HM: Borderlands 2, Mass Effect 3)
2013: Bioshock Infinite
2014: Alien: Isolation
2015: The Witcher 3
2016: XCOM 2 (HM: Deus Ex)
2017: Prey
2018: Subnautica
2019: Resident Evil 2 (HM: Control, Outer Wilds)
2020: Ori and the Will of the Wisps
2021: Deathloop (HM: Subnautica: Below Zero)
2022: Elden Ring

2010. How can you split it between RDR and Mario Galaxy 2?
2011. Ocarina of Time 3D.
2012: The Walking Dead.
2013: Fire Emblem Awakening
2014: Smash 4
2015: MGSV but also played the s**t out of Mario Maker.
2016: Uncharted 4
2017: Zelda BOTW
2018: Smash Ultimate
2019: Resident Evil 2
2020: The Last of Us Part II
2021: Metroid Dread

2010: Red Dead Redemption
2011: Dark Souls
2012: Borderlands 2
2013: The Last Of Us
2014: Infamous second son - literally the only game released that year I finished
2015: Bloodborne
2016: Pokemon Go
2017 Horizon Zero Dawn

2018: Red Dead Redemption 2 - Spiderman very close
2019: Sekiro
2020: Doom Eternal
2021: Returnal, even though I didn't get to it until this year
2022: Horizon Forbidden West

2014 and 2016 very hard to pick something worthy. 18 19 and 20 all very hard to split a couple of games

Good thread. Started my list in the late 80s which is when I was capable of picking up a joystick. The years are based on PAL or Aus releases.

1991: Sonic the Hedgehog
1992: Street Fighter II
1993: Sim City 2000
1994: NBA Jam

1997: Super Mario 64
1998: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (honorable mentions: Resident Evil 2, GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, Metal Gear Solid, Pokémon Red/Blue) * amazing year *

2016: Stardew Valley

2018: God of War (honorable mentions: Red Dead Redemption 2, Beat Saber, Hollow Knight) * amazing year *
2019: Resident Evil 2

Looking back, there were some absurd years for AAA games, and it was really hard to pick a favourite in some of those blockbuster timelines.

Great list. Personally I would choose MGS2 or GTA 3 for 2001. I think CE has aged pretty badly compared to Halo 2.

I must admit I haven't gone back to play CE since the first few years after release. Both those games you mentioned are absolute bangers! I think for me it was the sheer multiplayer fun of CE and getting around Blood Gulch for countless hours (an all-time map).
