Drugs/doping in AFL

He covered all his bases and slammed all the doors shut. An appeal would seem unlikely. But with Essendon who knows?
No doubt you are both right but he allowed the appeal and one could appleal the contractual provisions offended the act and his conclusion from that. It's unlikely to get up given the purpose of the act, but as above, it's Essendon and, more particularly, Hird so who knows!

Paddy won't be able to activate that clause, the AFL wouldn't want him too. - Essendon Board Logic

Wouldn't mind seeing the injectors cop some REAL punishment for their cheating, Ryder leaving would only just be enough IMO.
They are so ******. Paddy will leave. Then others will leave. Then the litigation will begin. Their gona get sued for millions.
I cant see Essendon surviving this.
I would feel sorry for them but still to this point havnt heard 1 admission of guilt. Not one apology, and hird still coaching. Their an absolute disgrace and deserve everything thats coming.

Essendon egos and outlandish legal tactics are going to cost them even more:

"Any hope that Essendon players would receive the same deal, or even better, than the month sanctions given to past and present Cronulla players evaporated on Friday when Justice John Middleton handed down his judgment in the Federal Court.

Justice Middleton comprehensively dismissed an application by Essendon and coach James Hird that the joint AFL-ASADA investigation was unlawful, thereby endorsing the punitive action the AFL took against the club and Hird for governance breaches and approving ASADA's issuing of show cause notices to 34 past and present players.

The possibility of a six-month sanction, tendered by ASADA chief executive Ben McDevitt to the AFL, and withdrawn when Essendon and Hird took their Federal Court action – as exclusively reported by Fairfax Media on August 22 – is also likely to evaporate.

It is possible ASADA's proposed sanction could increase to 12 months. Had Essendon accepted the half-yearly bans in June, with backdating to reduce the amount of playing time lost, they would not be in the horrendous position the club and its officials and players now find themselves."

This has descended into a bit if a Bomber smashing thread, but anyway...

We've gotta leave people like Liam Jones alone. It has TDL again written all over it.
If we traded 38 even for him then when it comes draft time there's guarenteed to be a slider there that would be gold. I still am annoyed that we gave 47 for TDL and then Tom Langdon goes to collingwood in the 60s after being there right under our nose at Sandy.
It can be tough to unearth stars later in the draft but you gotta be in it to win it. There gold in dem dar' hills.
5-6 ND picks, 1 PD, 4 rookies.

What's happened to Essendon has been a bright light in a difficult year. I'm absolutely loving it! It's a car crash. Imagine if Hird's boys were at the Dons...he mightn't have been so flippant about the players health. I love that this will be his enduring legacy.

Hmmmm, didn't big Maxy Crow start off at the Bumbers??..........:D

Regardless of what penalty (likely given the trending of the court action) is given by asada you would have to assume a bunch of the Essendon players will feel pretty aggrieved by the process.

Especially if it turns out ASADA whacks them with longer bans compared to Cronulla (also highly likely as ASADA now has to stamp it authority over the process) you would assume a bunch of players will follow Ryder out the door.

Given that it is possible (maybe not likely, but possible) a bunch of them need to sit out a big part of next year, i think we should make a play for either Carlisle or Hurley now.

We can afford to have them sit out, as essentially we are going to be a bit shite next year, so we might as well cop the pain, try and get a few guns ready for 2016 and still pick up a top 3 pick.

Id like to see reductions in bans for players that move from Essendon, in recognition that, for a lot of the players, the club is largely culpable. There can be a mini draft, picks mirroring that of the actual draft, of course!

Was reading the Bombers board.

This is what they think they can get for Ryder...

ESS trade Paddy Ryder to Brisbane for picks #4 + #23.

ESS trade Paddy Ryder to GWS Giants for pick #3 + Jon Giles

ESS trade Paddy Ryder to GWS for Dylan Shiel, Mark Whiley and even GWS' second rounder (23-24?).

lol. Ryder's good.

He's not THAT good.

They're over-estimating Essendon's bargaining position. Ryder securely contracted for two years, they might get decent value. Ryder contemplating an exit clause, nowhere near. 2nd round and steak knives if they're lucky.

Definitely they are really backed into a corner. If they try to get his contract upheld he can test the legality of getting out of it. If he can walk it opens the door for the rest of the players. They really have to hope Brissy don't want to screw them too hard. Irony in that last year Brisbane were getting nailed by everyone else who were offering them peanuts for their high picked youth.

They're also overestimating the other clubs' willingness to trade fairly with them. None of the clubs like Essendon - the mud they've slung on themselves has tarnished the whole AFL... including all the innocent clubs, to a greater or lesser degree. This, on top of years of one-sided trading by the Injectors does not suggest they will have a club doing them a favour in October.

So who else wants to see Essendon become one of the best supported teams in the VFA/VFL again?

The way it's going though they might be lucky if they're allowed to field a side in the VAFA.

Edit: actually the VAFA probably operate on a higher ethical standard, Essendon might need to apply to the EDFL

Dont forget that their supporters are totally delusional. James and the club have done no wrong remember.
And anybody like Ryder who raises any health concerns is just a trouble making turd.

Not only that, but Essendon are bargaining from a disadvantaged position. They will be bent over a barrel
