Laura Kane - New AFL Exec General Manager of Football

I don't care who it is in the job as long as the priorities are focused on the game itself and the fans who support it. She must not put the broadcasters ahead of the fans. When you picture the General Manager of Football, you think tact, professionalism, and intelligence. you occasionally get someone who's eccentric for the sake of being eccentric, but most of the time you can expect that someone with enough level-headedness to get the job will be of relatively sound mind all around. Despite the name "Kane" let's hope she does a good job and has a very thick skin, she's gonna need it. The video review system, the fixture, finals venues, the MRP and umpiring need to be constantly addressed before they even think about any more "special" rounds".

While I agree with your sentiment, she's going to be doing what she's told. As if this role, despite who does it, isn't simply one of a puppet for the most part.
It's also a s**t Kicker role being the focal point to address the inevitable controversies and complaints that come up over the course of a season

It's amazing how long the AFL take to fill these gigs, then simply recruit someone from the next office. They need some new ideas in there.

The commission is the worst though, some of the most boring old timers on there, it's like goyder just gets in anybody that isn't a threat or won't point out his incompetence.

Quite frankly the AFL's recruitment is an absolute farcical embarrassment really.

I would love to know how many HR consultants have lined their pockets over this multi-month worldwide search debacle to end where we currently have..... with two internal applicants being appointed. That money would have better been spent on the grassroots of the game (which the Commission is hellbent on destroying), umpire development or god forbid in the pockets of the people that actually play the game.

I can't quite believe that Gil still has not left. He's basically poisoned the well for Dillon who subsequently hasn't been able to properly recruit a head of footy. Pretty poor by Gil and the current Commission really, but is that really any surprise given the dire state of numerous facets of the game?

We can no doubt look forward to all of the cheerleading media brigade who are either on the payroll or reliant entirely on AFL income through commercial agreements to quickly revert to the narrative that the game has never been stronger and what a legacy everyone has left with the newbies being in such a position of strength......

Everyone and their dog can see who the best candidates for the respective roles were and they certainly weren't from AFL House.

The AFL is a financial powerhouse, but they have the best and most popular product in the country. Pretty much anybody could run it and seem successful.

So many dumb people in this thread.

This post is pointless without actually opining yourself.

Regardless; Laura Kane is a wonderful, intelligent person. Had the pleasure of talking to her many, many times during her tenure with NMFC. She's got a great footy brain. This is a good appointment.

Was her time at North Melbourne a massive success? What did she achieve?

Seems to speak well, which is an important part of the role. That and to cop it from everyone about footy related matters.

Agree with the other posters about the AFL's recruitment. They undertake an exhaustive search and then appoint someone from the inside. Would be interested to know what the last significant appointment they made that wasn't an insider.

And Gill GTFO please.

She’s on tv now and she’s garbage.
Triggered hard by the “we have to consider the broadcasters” line wrt Goal Reviews. And: “what if mark of the year was taken on a kickout?”

* the broadcasters, what about the fans you flog.
And no one over the age of 7 cares about Mark of the Year. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤮🤮🤮🤮
Basically what she’s saying is broadcasting rights which equal dollars are more important than the integrity of the game, aka, getting the goal reviews right.

Bust.

It’s a good appointment if she can actually make changes to technology that make the game better. We don’t need another monotone in house executive playing up to broadcasters to get revenue or strengthening the presence of gambling streams. We need someone to actually improve grass roots football and improve the technology that is completely farcical.

They appoint from within because they can’t and won’t tolerate any external ideas or embrace change from the norm. The AFL is a licence to print money. In what professional sport are executives paid more than the players and technology a constant talking point each week due to its faults?

I watched and listened to her on 360, she made a lot of sense and made some excellent points regarding the score review, none of that political garbage that Gill likes to spout. I'm not sure what people here are complaining about.

You obliviously didn't listen to what she said. Well done.

Her first day saw an eye rake get a fine with zero comment on how Greene got a cut on his face, while a GWS player who was shepherding had accidental high contact and gets a week.

That night she goes on AFL 360 and talks about ball tracking technology with robots while the actual solution is lining the goal and behind posts with hi speed HD cameras which can cost as little as $1k each and then you get software to ensure they are kept in sync at all times.

But sure... I have complete faith in her bucking the trend and actually making the game better.

You know if the afl was so keen on getting a female as the ceo (goyder actually chose Watson wheeler before the clubs flipped it and always chooses female ceo's in his chairman gigs), then I really wonder why Nicole Livingston wasn't considered? She is super impressive (as seen on 360 tonight), has profile around the country and no doubt a lot of contacts.

I'm surprised she has just stayed as the W ceo and never moved up to a higher position in the men's game.

Really don't mind St Kilda hosting the EF at the G and I hope the crowd reflects the bigger venue.

Wasn't overly happy however at Laura Kane's statement which didn't acknowledge the club or fanbase whatsoever. All "We, we, we" which probably tells us that it will be 'business' as usual at the top.

“The MCG is the home of finals and we had the opportunity to play three days in a row and we took it,” Kane explained on SEN’s Sportsday.

“We would contemplate Marvel if we had four Victorian games, but we didn’t. We’ve got three games, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, at the MCG which we’re really looking forward to.”
