AFL keen to join Magpies at new home

Caroline Wilson

VFL GAMES by the Yarra River look set to become one feature of Collingwood's new training ground at the Olympic Park site under a proposal by the Magpies that is being supported by the AFL.

Collingwood is negotiating with the State Government and the Melbourne Olympic Park Trust to transform its soon-to-be-completed MCG-size training facility alongside the Lexus Centre into a match-day venue for its VFL team.

And the AFL, which has been searching for a second-tier ground to stage big under-18 TAC fixtures and national under-age matches, looks set to become a player in the Olympic Park and Lexus redevelopment, possibly building a new grandstand and helping to fund the new facility to be used by AFL Victoria.

Magpies chief executive Gary Pert said the club would also investigate whether Collingwood's VFL games could be played under lights at the new ground, just as rugby league, rugby union, soccer and athletic events have been run there at night.

"The ground will obviously be used as a training facility, and if it worked and if all the criteria could be met to play VFL games there, we would be keen to do that," he said. "We've got lights and I would have to get independent advice as to whether they would be strong enough to contest football games. They are certainly good enough for the athletes."

The Victorian Institute of Sport and all major Victorian athletic events will be moved to a redevelopment at Albert Park at the site of the Bob Jane Stadium as a direct result of Collingwood's tenancy agreement with the MOPT and the new rectangular stadium set to become the home of Melbourne Victory, Melbourne Storm and potentially the Melbourne Football Club. Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, a driving force behind the Magpies' historic move from Victoria Park, remains on the board of Athletics Australia.

Originally, the Magpies were to have been given the rectangular stadium site as their training ground but relinquished their right to that land in exchange for the Olympic Park athletics stadium.

The redevelopment is conservatively expected to be completed within two years but rebuilding cannot start until the athletics events and the VIS can move into Albert Park.

The size, proximity and quality of the new training ground has loomed as a tantalising one for the VFL as well as the competition's governing body given its lack of control over the MCG.

"We're working closely with Collingwood and the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation over the possibility of staging under-18 and VFL games there," said AFL chief Andrew Demetriou.

"It's got some merit and the discussions surrounding the grandstand being built by the AFL through our facilities reserve and using it for AFL Victoria is a possibility."

Although it was once mooted that the Demons would share the training venue with Collingwood, that possibility appears certain not to eventuate and even the prospect of Melbourne having a training venue within the Olympic Park precinct has become more remote.

The Demons will start training at their new ground at Casey early next month.

Bump it a few notches and let the smaller clubs play home games there.

Is there room to do that? I am not too familiar with the city TBH.

I know it'll probably never happen - just throwing it out there.

(*Waits for FlogFooty's finest to begin the North Melbourne trolling*)

I don't have a problem with this. I would if we weren’t getting help for upgrades ourselves, and I would be justified in doing so.

It's not like Collingwood will own this oval. Its an investment for footy, which is what the AFL exists for, being the self-appointed 'keeper of the code". This is no different to North and the Dogs upgrades.

Would be good for them to upgrade it further and turn it into that boutique stadium that was muted a while ago. Would need at least 30k capacity though, I don’t know anything about the area but I am guessing that its more than likely impossible to build those facilities and supporting infrastructure in that location.

We own the land.... it will be primary, a training ground for Collingwood.

My understanding is that you lease the land.

This understanding seems to be supported in the article:

"...a direct result of Collingwood's tenancy agreement with the MOPT..."

Fav's is one of the Many supporters that believe all the spin that comes out of some of the employees mouths at Lexus. You know who I'm talking about Favs..... and I have been warning about him for years.

We have a LONG Lease and we effectively pay ZERO for that lease with our Naming rights sponsors cash injection to have Olympic Park refereed to as Lexu$, Lexus Lexus Lexus. It's highly unlikely Lexus would have come on board to re name Victoria Park in their name so being at Olympic Park cost's us nothing. I am hoping a massive Car Park is being looked at as part of this plan as ATM there is very little parking available apart from a few spots at the Tennis Centre for $10 flat rate on match days.

Interesting. Sound move by the AFL. Agree it would be better to kick it up a notch and make it 30-40k capable for North etc.
No >30k stadiums can be built in Melbourne for a while. That was the agreement when Jihad Dome was built.

I thought the MFC agreement with the rectangular venue was settled years ago?

Firstly, really, really happy about this.

Lexus has not flet like a footy club due to the lack of oval next door. With this oval, plus the new space at Lexus Centre via the moving of the VIS we should be able to have member facilities built that over-look the oval making it finally feel like a home.

Secondly re the boutique satdium question. The mooted figure was 25,000 capacity and with modern engineering that could be done (IMO). Question is whether Collingwood would want this to happen (control issues) and whether the AFL would fund it.

Regardless this is some of the best news in a long time.

The VFL itself has been crying out for a boutique ground of its own, to stage showpiece matches. North Port Oval is too small and too inconvenient in reality to continually do that job. And as the VFL Grand Final this year showed, the Dome isn't the best possible place to stage the grand final, because of its sheer magnitude.

And i'm sure pies fans would have loved playing at Carlton!!!

Do agree with everything you say, but a car park?? Won't happen. For the people attending VFL games it isn't sustainable. Only way it would work if the stadium was a 25-30k capacity, and as others have mentioned under the ground. In any case, it's a 5 minute longer walk from the city to that site than what it is to walk to the 'G.

A lot of parkland there too, build a car park there you'll be getting all sorts of interest groups coming out of the woodwork. Even look at the Royal Childrens Hospital site? They only let them build the new hospital on the proviso the old hospital site is returned to park land.., and have you been through Royal Park lately.., it's nothing special.

Good idea but isnt the grandstand on the west side adequate already? = would be about 6-8000 capacity - not too decrepit.

Too bad about melbourne being bumped - they 'appear' to be sinking slowly
