Best Individual Performances To Win A Match

All worthy nominations.

As you haven't specified players only, I'll put forward Ron Barassi as Carlton coach in the 1970 grand final.

Diesel at Sydney and Carlton strung many of these together without being a KPP.

He was so quick, buried so deep in the packs that often his influence was only realised after seeing the slow motion replays.

Rischmond fans will surely put forward a couple of Richo spectaculars.

Carey in the wet. Pick a game - there's about 15 of em.

Jarman 1997 GF.

Jarman was good but had a lot of influence from Shane Ellen and Andrew MacLeod in that game which helped and slightly detracted from it being solely him.

Didn't he also show off one of his other specialties that day by having Peter Caven's face tattooed on his elbow?

You know you've put in a match winning performance when there are calls for the 'Send Off' rule to be introduced because of it! :D

Yep. Stuff the send-off rule, except for the fact it may have helped Geelong in the 08 Grand Final when a certain dirty Hawthorn player knocked out Harley.

Also loved at the end of that performance when he gave it to the crowd.

Carey / Yablett and Matthews then daylight.................sure there have been bit players in there (for anyone who remembers the Krakouer bros were able to turn games) but if you were picking players who could turn a game by imposing themselves then the 3 Ive mentioned dominate....

Carey against Cats in 97 final.
Carey against Bombers in 93 final quarter.
Carey against Hawks in 94 elim final.
Carey against Port in 99 final.
Carey against Melbourne in 96.

And to stop the trend. Shannon Grant in 2005.
Kicked 4 goals in 4th quarter versus Saints to singlehandedly win game for us.
Did the same against Pies later on in season, two 55 metre goals on the run to bring us back from nowhere.

And on a sour note. Jarman. Darren bloody f**kin Jarman.
Too bad in 07 he couldnt kick a goal from 15 metres out and hit the post. And that was a kick to win the game.

Not Even Pav would hit the post from there:eek:

He made up for it a year later.
And by the end of Pavs career Shagga will still have won more games off his own boot then Pav.

I guess, of recent memory, Hird's 15 possessions and the winning goal in the final quarter vs. West Coast Rnd 3, 2004 was the best one I can think of.
One you Bomber's fans may have wiped from the memory. Fev's 8 to complete one of our biggest comebacks in Round 3 2007.

Fev's first goal came in time on of the 2nd quarter.

I'm sure there are better, but in recent memory that is probably one of the Blues' greatest.

Stuey Dew - 5 mins of brilliance in the 08 GF. Also set up the goal that kept Hawthorn in touch in the second. :thumbsu:

Lets all be honest there are 3 that could change a game single handedly, not only the once off, but nearly every second week

Ablett
Carey
Matthews

There is absolutely daylight between everyone else, its just a shame the kids on this site never got to watch them play.

Hhhmmm memories

Agree with this. Matthews was an unbelievable player. Carey basically owned Friday night football. And Ablett was just Ablett. All three of these guys regularly, not just every now and then but regularly made every other player on the ground look like a complete spud.

Can ayone think of any brilliant stopping jobs that someone has done? They are not neccessarily match winning, but can often change the course of a game. It may be a tagging job or a defender stopping a gun forward. Obviously been a WCE fan and it been very recent i remember Glass's efforts on Hall in the 06 Grand Final (he was innaccurate though).

I was hoping to hear of some other efforts from defenders that usually go unrecognised. Even more interesting would be a coaches decision to move a player or employ a tactic that changes the course of a game and ultimately won them the match.

IIRC there was a game where Dorotich was moved on to Lockett after he had kicked something like 6 til half time and kept him kickless after that.

I was hoping to hear of some other efforts from defenders that usually go unrecognised.

The huge Hawthorn comeback vs Geelong in Rd 6 89 was kicked off by G Ayres. He was also reasonable in a couple of GFs.

genuine lol, it was a boot in a tackle, and reality:

So now an accidental head clash is considered a "dirty hawthorn player knocking Harley out." Geez some of you cat fans are clutching at straws these days

ROFL. I would troll but don't wanna risk a card.

In soccer despite it being accidental, that would have got him a straight red card and a nice few weeks holiday at the start of the season. Send off rule/sin bn would be stupid.

Michael Voss's last 10 minutes in the 2002 Grand Final.

After the Norm Smith votes had already been cast.

{expletive deleted}

The first example that came to mind. He just rose to the top and threw himself at everything in those dying 10 minutes.

From Freo's point of view yeah Pav's against North in 03, against adelaide in 05 where we just fell short after he booted 8 to get us back from 37 points down at 3/4 time. Schammer's breakout final quarter against Brisbane in 03 (hehe).

But the main one I think of is Justin Longmuir against Melbourne at the G in 2005. The only ruckman for us all day, beating Jeff White convincingly and we lead then he goes down injured. Melbourne turn the game around, take the lead and look like running away with it until Longmuir limps back out on to the field, makes a contest and starts winning it, our midfield took back control and we went on to comeback and win. One of the better showings of an individual's affect on the entire outcome of the game and the entire output of a team.
