Are we going to be able to put a side on the park next week?

In - Wells Wright Grima/Pratt Jones
Out - Harding Smith Hale Lower

Is this what you would do if coach, or what you think Brad Scott will do ?

Cos' if it's the latter, prepare to be disappointed.

Almost pointless predicting what will happen this week with all these injuries, but that is essentially what I'd do depending on the fitness of about 10 blokes...

I'd love Lower to be the answer for the in and under midfield role. He didn't really get much of a go in the midfield under Laidley. But based on what we've seen so far this year, unfortunately, Ed's a depth player at best. I'd say that for us to get to where we're going, he would have to be left behind at some stage.

But as with all our players, I'd love him to prove me wrong and have a 100 games+ career at North.

There are slow blokes who just keep on keeping on and there are slow blokes.

True,

Kingsnapper intimated that Smith and Lower are not up to AFL standard, for one reason being that they're too slow. A myopic view at best, when as evidenced with Simon a footballer can develop other areas of their game to be valuable to their side. Similar to Daniel Rich, who doesn't test too quickly over 20m for a midfielder and in the time-trials/beep tests.

Although in saying that, they are elite kicks, something Ed lacks is an ability to put his name up there with the elite kicks/decision makers in the competition.

But don't simply give me "they're too slow".

Assuming Wells, Pratt, Grim and Hansen are out due to injury and Harding is dropped for form (disappointing as by all accounts he was tearing it up in the VFL), that means there are still only two changes. Despite what people on here feel about Campbell, Lower and Smith, I can't see any of them being dropped with an injury list like this. Although given Bon's comments last week you have to wonder about Hale too.

Concussion should probably be treated more seriously than any other injury, but it isn't so if Wright can remember his mum's name he'll play. That leaves one more spot (if Hale stays). So who gets the nod? Obst or O'Keefe perhaps?

But you will find that all the great midfielders aren't particularly quick, e.g. Harvey (R), Bucks, Voss etc. Disposal skills are a lot more important than speed as speed will reduce with age, disposal skills won't, in fact they will improve with age.

Diesel Williams wasn't quick but by Christ he was a fantastic midfielder.

Yes, I was supporting you. Greg Williams was slow. Many years back, John Byrne was slow for us but he knocked up getting kicks and handballs because he ran and ran. And hit targets when he got the footy.

Ed's got to do more than extract the ball. He's got to run and run and he's got to kick the goals when the opportunities arise. Just like Andy Swallow does.

Fair enough. Smith is too slow, can't take a mark, can't kick, just looks like a fish out of water.
