Labor's launch - or how Bob Hawke owned it yet again

Sat and watched Labor's launch this morning.

Gillard was introduced by former Prime Minister Bob Hawke - who for 25 minutes, really owned the stage. It was almost as if he was the PM himself...statesman like, but, real enough to make the point.

Gillard then came on, thanked Kevin Rudd, then outlined what the last 3 years was about. Not really an inspiring speech, but, it was entirely ad-lib (no autocue).

Well, it's hardly a surprising response from a rusted on Liberal supporter when their own best leader in recent history has quit the party and refuses to have any dealings with it anymore, the only other choice being the second PM in history to lose his own electorate at an election.

They should've gotten Keating to do it, it's been far too long since we've heard an opposition leader called a "gutless spiv"

Now you spruke a " medical consultation " by video ...what happens if a patient gives the Specialist , Doctor or nurse the wrong answer due the patients limited medical ability , then the patient becomes worse and dies ?
who is to blame for that ?
Where will the medical people be talking to us from ..India , China ..where ?
Will the medical people be up to Australian standards ?
What if the people dont have a computer ?
Gillard on the economy ..we are Billions in debt thanks to the ALP and are increasing that debt by millions daily along with all the " failed ALP policies we are paying for ..

Hawke is a disgrace in the mould of Whitlam.

He loves to bag Fraser's record but overlooks what he and Keating left behind at the other end and the amount of bullshit he spun along the way. Most of his 'reforms' were far right policy that no liberal could get through due to unions.

The only thing Hawke did well was start the process whereby the unions ceased to be a major player although Gillrud has given them a lot back. Whether it was closing down the pilots at the behest of his mate Ables, being a drunk, sleaxy individual who grossly neglected his own kids or racking up debt.

Like Shitlam, he wrecked the joint but still thinks he is a legend. Has anyone ever worked out how the son of a priest got to be so dman wealthy? Odd how many labor pollies go onto be very, very wealthy post politics.

Pretty much all the affection is based on folksy nostalgia, which just grows as everyone forgets about the problems of his PMship. I bet most of the people on this forum were still in primary school when Keating knocked him off.

As for the content - meh. Typical Hawke, spent 90% of the time talking about how awesome he was as PM. God knows how he and Keating worked together for so long, both of them have bigger egos than any other politician of modern times.

You're right though, I was still in primary school! 2001 was my first Federal election, and so far in 3 state and 3 federal polls I've only voted for Labor once.

I was as well, but, do remember the good things he bought to the country - things the Coalition never had the balls or real understanding of Australians to do:

Medicare - whilst Whitlam tried to do it, Hayden persisted with it in Opposition, as opposed to Fraser's Private Health only policy (still is the primary health policy of the Coalition). Hawke, with the backing of Blewett bought it in and now it is the primary health policy of the nation and is world's best practice.

The floating of the dollar - do people who love the Coaltion actually think that Howard would have ever done it? He didn't during his time as treasurer to Fraser.

Nuclear-free state - with the backing of State Governments, Hawke basically enshrined into legislation the fact we can't have nuclear power in this country - and backing solar technology at the same time. Ahead of the game.

The Hawke government was certainly very strong, but as you say I put that down more to the quality of the front bench than Hawke. To say that government worked well primarily because he didn't get in the way is hardly a ringing endorsement of the man himself.

We were still in the Cold War and there were still fears over nuclear energy and weapons. Then Chernobyl happened. I can remember as a child the reaction to that. It didn't take long for Victoria to legislate itself as a nuclear-free state - the law is still on the books.

At the same time, there was a conscious move to solar power. About this time I was a regular visitor to the Goulburn Valley, which according to the CSIRO at the time, had on average more days of Sun than anywhere else in the country. The locals seized on that...and soon had basically all houses and businesses with solar panels on their roof...even the parking machines in Shepparton and Echuca went solar powered. Throw in the debate about the hole in the ozone layer (yep it's still there and growing every day) and the banning of CFC's.
