Was watching highlights of Judd's West Coast days, and had a thought that that Judd was the best player i have ever seen in my lifetime. Its a reason i consider him the best player in the game. He was able to accomplish a Brownlow as a player that didn't have a lot a tags due to players like Cousins, Kerr, and Fletcher being around. We were able to see him at his brilliant best.
Fast forward 6 years and Judd wins a second brownlow without support from any of the players around him.

So i pose the question, which would you rather?

WC Judd at his slippery best.

or

Carl Judd who has the ability to single handedly drag his team to the Finals?

Surely I wont be accused of bias when I say West Coast Judd....What a freak.

Not a freak now, but still an amazing player that lifts and leads like no-one else when it matters.

Not even a contest really. Agree with Hangover, in that before the injuries and the move came about, he was the best player I've ever seen play.

Let's not get carried away. The guy has never been a good kick and has other deficiencies as well.

Wayne Carey is a much better player than Judd as are several others who have played in the last 20 years

The Carlton Judd has become a much better extractor of the footy. Agreed he doesn't play as flashy but that's soley because of personel. A champion of the game that has managed to adapt to two very different situations. Just proves how good he is and will be in the next few years.

Can't split them, same guy, same brilliance just a different style.

No, he was just as good a clearance player at West Coast. His clearances were also a lot better, he wouldn't just hack the ball out of there, he would pick it up, bounce off a couple of players, and run off.

Hey HP, have you got that youtube vid of Twigley talking about Judd being more of an outside player at WCE? Would be a good idea to post in here :p

Surely his leadership now at Carlton holds more value. Best Leader in the competition. Personally i would prefer to some one with Judds leadership qualities, someone like that to bring the absolute best out of everyone. In his WCE days if the team was struggling his flash would be brilliant but it wouldn't really bring anyone else into the game.

I did vote WCE though.

That was Cuzzy's, or even Daniel Chick's, role at the Eagles during Judd's reign. He may have been the captain, but he was far from the leader at West Coast that he is now at Carlton.

That's probably the only facet I'd rather current Judd to WCE Judd in.

West Coast Judd definitely, carrying Carlton will take years off his career

Haha, still mad after all these years? Worsfold and the WC flogs forced him to play when he was injured in his final season at the Eagles so that limited his output in his first few seasons at Carlton. When it's all said and done, Judd will be remembered as a Carlton player.

Actually his kicking efficiency was elite at his peak in 2006 (77%). That year he was the leader in hard ball gets in the competition by a huge margin, leader in clearances, 4th in inside 50s, 6th in tackles, and kicked the most goals of any midfielder.

His only possible weakness that year was that he didn't take a lot of marks. But apart from that he was scarily dominant. Very few players that I have seen have been better than Judd was at that point, and I can't think of any midfielders that were.

It was actually 83%

77% might be the total disposal efficiency or something.

Amazing stat for 2006 is that despite averaging the most hardball gets and contested possessions, he only missed 12 field kicks for the season.

Sorry mate. I think you're wrong. His best years were at WCE and he is just a shadow of his former self now at Carlton. People will remember him as a great WCE player, who left the club to chase the $$. I highly doubt he will win a flag at Carlton and he must have known that when he went there.

He just came to your club for money.

You're right HP, I found his prospectus review from that year.

Judd continues to build his reputation as the best midfielder of the modern era with his dominance in 2006 culminating in a set of numbers that may never be matched. Judd averaged more clearances, contested possessions and hardball-gets than any player in 2006 and also booted more goals than any other midfielder (29). He had an elite kicking efficiency of 83% and he remarkably turned the ball over only 12 times from his 332 kicks. His work when not in possession can often go unnoticed, however he averaged five tackles per game last season which ranked sixth in the AFL. Judd's dominance in the big games is outstanding with averages of 29 disposals, 14 contested possessions, eight hardball-gets, eight clearances, five inside 50s and four tackles in the past two seasons.
Incredible numbers.

He will be remembered firstly as a West Coast premiership captain, then as a Carlton player. Do you honestly think that will be forgotten? :o

I doubt the reason he left was for money, just happened that Carlton was prepared to offer him the most in Melbourne.

History would suggest Chris Judd would be remembered as a Carlton player, when he was a premiership captain and Brownlow medallist at West Coast

Well said Tom, well said.

At West Coast he was the best outside player in the game, but with a ferocious inside game as well.

At Carlton he is the best inside player in the game, but with a ferocious outside game as well.

Absolute champion either way. A credit to him that he can play the two roles with equal brilliance. But if you had to pick, it'd be his WCE days purely for the 'freak' factor. But i disagree that he's any less influential since he's come to the Blues.

A tie for me.
He was brilliant at WCE, but at Carlton he is now the hard ball king.
Funny how people say he is a shadow of his former self at Carlton. 3 seasons, 3 All Australians, 3 B&F's, numerous media awards, brownlow. On average he is ranked the 3rd best player over the last 3 years by coaches and his peers (totalled results in MVP)
So how can a bloke who is rated so highly by everyone over the last 3 years be a shadow of his former self? AFL players have not gone backwards. Judd wanst twice the player anybody else was when he was at WCE.
Judd today is IMO the best player in the comp along with Ablett. At WCE he was the best player in the comp.
TIE
