Excuse us if it's not a little insulting that every Carlton supporting man and his dog thinks that we should be gracious and blessed for receiving their sloppy seconds.

Again, I've twice already said I don't think Ratten is the man for the Port job.

Do you understand then why I deem your continued misunderstanding as emotional? Even more so you've now claimed I've somehow insulted you. You're acting as wacky as my ex-gf on the rag. She would often be insulted by things I never said :D

And FWIW I wish Carlton has retained Ratten. So even I want our sloppy seconds.

And as much as you would like to think this board and my posting revolves around you, it doesn't and my initial comment was not directed at you. Regardless of your intention the spruiking of Ratten by every media personality (particularly, ironically, those supporting Carlton) is a little grating, particularly since a week ago you could smell the stench of his reputation from Perth.

But good on you for getting personal :thumbsu:

I might be wrong here, but I think Eade has achieved far more with far less at the Bulldogs than Ratten has at Carlton. Also, I haven't seen any evidence that Eade is past it. He got sacked the moment the Bulldogs looked to be going downhill - whether that's the Bulldog's higher ups deciding it's success or the sack or whether they thought they'd save themselves some cash now that they're out of contention we probably won't ever know. Either way, Eade looks to be best option for Port Adelaide as an experienced coach.
With regard to your opening sentance, I disagree. With Carlton, once you get past the 6 or so 'superstars' they drift pretty quick into nothingness. However, those 'nothingness' players have been able to do amazing things. (Eade @ the bullies had one or two more 'great' players.
It is a bit of a line ball I guess, but I never rated Eade. I rate Ratts more. :footy:

I don't think it's so cut and dried here. Ratten essentially had a bunch of top kids at the Blues. Eade had a good core of senior players at the WB. The whole reason the Blues mortgaged the house for Judd was that the Carlton list was utterly bereft of quality senior players. Now these kids are growing and last year they were 3pts from a preliminary final from a Subi final - would have loved to have Gibbs for that who was in the best form of his career to that point. This year - and this where I really feel for Ratts - injuries left him without anywhere near his team for almost the whole season. Now just as the list is moving into the type of experience level that Eade had, he gets shafted due to it.

So really the far more equals a 3pt loss for the Blues at Subi and the far less equates to a more senior team.

Also, I haven't seen any evidence that Eade is past it. Yeah, I don't think Eade is passed it either, but I never really thought he had it either. I just don't see this guy as premiership coach ever and think that's what Port should be aiming for - the future. You've got a good young list and need s good young coach to grow with them IMO. Scott Burns would be a decent choice for me, Alan Richardson might be worth a look. Pity Bassett wasn't had some AFL grounding yet, as he seems to get the best out of players with the Redlegs.

Another emotional response that doesn't make any sense. Hey look, if I'm breaking your forum rules, or if your mods want to advice me be on my way, then I'll pack up and go without argument ... but this is just piss weak waffle.

If I may, as a club and supporter base (the majority of the sample here are heavily invested financial members who bleed Scotty mullets'n'Semaphore jetty chum) we have been pilloried, denigrated, patronised and plain arse****ed by the local and national media for the best part of five years since the Preliminary Final celebrations of Messrs Tredrea and Cornes were gleefully blown out of all proportion.

Forgive us then, when almost immediately the collective media don the steelcapped strap-on and start hammering us vociferously while pulling our head back and shouting 'RATTEN!' like it's some sort of BDSM safeword that will transform our prostatular reaming into something more desirable, like playing the part of Morgan Freeman in that scene in 'The Power of One' where he dines on the hen faeces adorning Daniel Craig's boot.

An appointment that would be so speculative and underwhelming, we may as well have let Mark Williams run his race in full, regardless of the likelihood of him resembling one of those stumbling marathon runners for whom victory, hydration and bowel control had long since become a pleasant olden-day memory. The same Mark Williams who actually won a Premiership and still had a fearsome career winning percentage but was reportedly no chance of winning the vacant Melbourne job when Bailey was under threat, even if he was interested.

Yet here we are, being not just recommended but dictated to that a thoroughly-resourced career Carlton man with a thoroughly mediocre record in Brett Ratten is such a can't miss laydown misere that we won't just be investing in electronic typewriters over the personal computer should we deign to peruse an alternative, but we'll be marking our cards as Fitziversity if we dare to make such an alternative appointment.

Hence, gnashing of teeth.

Me, I like football, and there's a lot of coaches around, but when it comes to Ports anyone but Ratten wins hands down.

^^^what Tribey said.

The last few pages of this thread has made me want to punch kittens. The immense arrogance of those trying to foist Rattten on us is mind blowing. What ever minor chances Ratten had before should be completely gone now.

And as much as you would like to think this board and my posting revolves around you, it doesn't and my initial comment was not directed at you.

Err ... I'm about the only Carlton poster here for the last several pages. Who were you talking about?

But good on you for getting personal :thumbsu:

Ah mate. It was just a joke based on me not having said what you accused. If it genuinely upset you, I apologise.

Some good ones here too :thumbsu:

I do agree that it's quite a turn up that the media would push Ratten for any senior job now. But shouldn't your gnashing of teeth be directed to the media then. I, as a Carlton supporter, have nothing to do with that. Hell, it's the same media that's just ripped my club an new arseh*le this week and pushed for our coaches sacking, so please don't group us with them.

The thoroughly-resourced mediocre record stuff is a sham though. Complete cliche light on insight.

Which part of it do you disagree with? You don't think Carlton are thoroughly resourced or you don't think he has a mediocre record? Either way, you're wrong.

Not many on BF would be able to grasp the general gist of this post.
But you have had your say!

Sure, Carlton are well resourced. They are also disfunctional at the top and have many groups in charge trying to get accross their own agendas. In short, if they were more focused up top they would probably be more successful. I don't get the hate from Port folks talking up Ratts chances with Port. I reckon he'd be a good fit. Fine if you disagree, I have been wrong on the odd occasion:p

I, as a Carlton supporter, have nothing to do with that.
He didn't even touch on the general idiocy that Carlton fans usually unleash on this board any time there's a chance an uncontracted player might consider even taking a piss in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, or their grand claims of what underperforming & injured Blues players are worth when some journo matches them to us.

Carlton fans are really the Patient Zero of inane bullshit on the Port board, even more than Cows fans or TSW.

. If it genuinely upset you, I apologise.

Exactly 0.0000 offence taken. For the record it's great getting legitimate insight from opposition supporters on this board, and as Tribey so eloquently put it you can probably see why the idea of Ratten anywhere near our head coaching position just doesn't jive with most (non-facebook) Port supporters, and actually has very little to do with Carlton (or you!).

I'd love to hear some West Coast supporters' opinion on Burns actually... he remains my preferred option (well, he or Eade) yet I've heard very little of him apart from "he's highly rated"...

No mate, and I've had a much closer seat to it all than you have. His record for the resources he's had in actuality, from go to woe, is not mediocre; it's not mind blowing either. 3pts away from a preliminary final with a young team is IMO better than anything Eade produced at the Bulldogs.

And most Grade 3 students wouldn't understand quantum mechanics o_O

Monkey King, it's only 'sham/light on insight' if:

1) Carlton aren't well-resourced these days
2) You don't know what 'mediocre' means.

It's a cliche mate. The "well resourced" Carlton Ratten took over were shit. Run down training facilities with some of the most antiquated equipment in the league, a list with a liberal dose of duds and a very young and inexperienced list. Anyone thinking a list with Whitnall as captain was well resourced simply has no idea.

Bower, Thornton and Russell are not what I regard as members of the Carlton team. These three combined this season for a whole 24 games (10 from a last roll of the dice with Bower) despite the list being riddled with injury. They are on the list and will be for just a few more weeks, but the ffact you've had to reach for these guys shows exactly what I'm saying.

So yeah. That's less than half the Carlton team sorry. The fact remains that like it or not, Ratten built a list as much he inherited one and he took it up the ladder. You can come up with diminutive rationalisations all you want, but they're pretty light on if you know your stuff.

If you're not up for a decent discussion based on facts then don't reply and I won't come back.
Add Kreuzer obtained by tanking the last 11 games to make sure you got yet another priority pick, plus Judd from the 2007 draft/trade period to the list and you have all your best players. Ratten built nothing.
Now please do go away.

Carlton, the only club that celebrates wooden spoons as much as premierships.

Can you please send at least the first paragraph quoted to every media out let and on the comments page of the Fairfax and News Ltd online papers. The online papers in sin city will run it. :thumbsu: Dermie will run it and have a giggle. Gerard Whateley will have a big blush. **** it, send it to Sam's mailbag - he will love the imagery of steel capped strap-on. Might even try to perform it.

I second this motion.

lol wat?

Eade coached the Bulldogs to 1 semi final and 3 preliminary finals (and has also coached the Swans to a GF in the past). Ratten coached Carlton to 1 semi final and no preliminary finals.

A more senior team doesn't mean a better team, by the way. Port are probably more senior than a hell of a lot of teams who are currently above them on the ladder.
