Gough is being a little harsh but he(?) kind of has a point....I'm the other way on this. I hate it when I ask someone their nationality and despite looking like something completely ethnic, they are like "I'm Australian". Yeh yeh I get it, you were born in Australia but what nationality are you?!!!!
From that wonderful (yet at times slightly inaccurate) resource Wikipedia:
Nationality is the legal relationship between an individual human and a state.
An ethnic group is a group of people whose members are identified through a common trait.
You've already used the word in your post. If you want to know about someones heritage, ask about their ethnicity. If you keep saying nationality they will keep correctly answering 'Australian'.
