The game's governing body appears well versed on the role Hird played in the high-risk chemical program. There appears no doubt he was aware of the jab-happy environment about the club.
But whatever misgivings the league bosses hold about Hird, they know they not only have legal issues to deal with but also public passions. If the league bosses have sensed a slight turning of the tide against Hird there has been no suggestion yet - as some expected - that players' parents could publicly turn against him. And the AFL has a history of protecting its biggest names.
It seems unfathomable that Hird did not see any cause for alarm in the supplements program; it's inexplicable that an email written in January cautioning safety and anti-doping compliance is the coach's only safeguard; and it's horrifying that his players still remain unaware of exactly what they took.
On Friday Hird once again urged patience, for all the facts to come out before asking him to deal with specifics. Here are some facts.
■In February, Hird took full responsibility for his club's football program and yet it is beyond doubt that he failed to show due diligence in employing Stephen Dank to treat his players.
■In early April, he stated his club would be in a very good position once the truth was established but he is not saying that now, nor can he yet say exactly what substances his players were given.
■His former chief executive, Ian Robson, has been removed for allegedly knowing very little of what went on. Hird helped establish the sport science program, he urged it, and text messages prove he at least knew of the secretive and irregular supplements environment.
Clearly, as previously stated, such behaviour would have him gone by now were his name Matthew Knights. But the game's governing body is highly unlikely to sack James Hird.
This should not prevent him from being suspended for bringing the game into disrepute, just as Dean Bailey was earlier this year.
If Hird is mitigated by virtue of his club's dysfunctional administration, then Bailey was also.
Surely, bringing the game into disrepute is a charge Hird cannot escape, try as he may to distance himself from the ''rogue'' element he allowed into Windy Hill. Nor can his club.

I just think it is fortunate that Macca18 has his birthday during *Essendons bye. We look forward to it as much as him. Happy Birthday Macca. Not enough of this thread lately. Needs more juice of the peptide variety. Where is Dank when you need him?
We don't need sympathy, we will just pump the drugs in all the way to top. You snooze you lose. When it's all said and done Essendon is too big a club to cop anything too severe. 16 premierships and counting!
