Didn't really hurt the hawks (we won 5 flags after this), but, ablett to Geelong for a (rumoured) yrs supply of oranges...

It didnt hurt I agree.... but can you imagine how ridiculous those Hawks teams would have been with GAS at CHF or FF.

Those teams were epic in their talent level already but adding him would have made you entirely untouchable....

Any trade that is for instant success over future stability invariably isn't worth it.

When we traded Pick 4 for Kane Johnson- it hurt our club. Whilst Johnson was important to the club and added leadership, he retired years ago. Pick 4 Became Pick 2 which was Daniel Wells- who is still running around and doing well. Even at 4 we could have got someone like Jared Brennan or Jarrad McVeigh

This is another reason I think the Pies stuffed up in essentially letting Dawes go for Quentin Lynch. Nothing to do with performance this year, but Dawes is a young key position player, and in a few years time they'll regret this.

Another is letting Ottens go for what we got. Although we got picks 12 and 16, we allegedly knocked back Moloney and Corey Enright- crazy when you consider we drafted Danny Meyer and Adam Pattinson and both lasted just years on our list.

Not a trade so much but letting Greg Williams go to Sydney wasn't very clever by Geelong in the 80's. Just because he asked for a bit more money. If they had of paid him the $40,000 he wanted he'd have stayed at the Cats and could have possibly turned some of those premiership losses into wins.

Trading Mumford has bitten us a bit as since Ottens retired we haven't really had a match winning ruckman. We just didn't have room in our cap to offer him a contract like Sydney did so we had to let him go. They gave Blake a contract that year too and that left only a small amount of money for Mumford. At the time I think they felt they had to repay Blake for the service he had put in as Ottens no 2, and carrying the ruck all those games Ottens was injured.

The interchange sub rule eventually led to the extinction of ruckmen like Blake, and Geelong got caught out having put their eggs in that basket. Mumford would have slotted in nicely as our no 1 ruckman after Ottens retired. But it was never to be and now we still struggle with that position.

Agree with you about Williams, he never wanted to leave Geelong! His hand was forced when Billy Goggin refused to budge over a lousy $5000 extra, it set Geelong back years and if Williams had been a Geelong player in 1989 the Cats would've won the flag that year! (see Sheahan open mike interview, he asks Williams would Geelong have won in 89 if you were playing? he dryly answers back "yep") The Cats were lucky that Couch, Hocking and Bairstow all arrived at the same time, it's mind boggling to think that you could've had Greg Williams on that list too. Ablett might very well have kicked 150 goals in a season. The Mumford loss was unavoidable at the time, the Swans offer was too good to be true for Mumford, you can't blame him for taking the deal. Geelong picked up Mitch Duncan with pick 28 so that eases the pain a little. The Cats also didn't get compensated enough for the loss of Ablett jr. Nothing short of the number 1 draft pick should've been given to the Cats for losing arguably the best player of past 50 years! Other than that, not many trades have come back to bite them on the arse, the Sean Denham/John Barnes deal was good for both clubs for example.

I get what you are saying about what could have been but I seriously doubt HT was on anyone else's draft radar in round 1. HT was a Wells special and mature age before the mature age thing got popular.. and we got all kinds of looks like WTF when he was taken...

Agree. From memory Geelong had just lost Egan and were keen for a ready made replacement, which was Taylor. No guarantees we would've drafted him or anyone else that was decent.

Some posters going off tangent a bit. The thread is about trades that pushed your club back not bad trades in isolation.

The Croad trade is the worst one for Freo, could have drafted Hodge or Judd which would have been handy in our 2006 Prelim. Freo fans justify the trade as we got Luke McPharlin, but pick 4 would have got Luke and change or even PSD as he was heading home anyway.

Not sure port screwed use on the ebert deal. Yes he's become a good player now , but when he was at west coast, he was horrible. I wasn't quite sure if he completely understood the out of bounds on the full rule

That's the risk you took when you drafted a bloke named Ebert. Only yourselves to blame. Now hopefully you can get one back over the franchises by doing the same thing to GC with Brandon Matera sometime in the near future.

I'm aware of that- hence stating essentially as they basically made a decision that they could get Lynch now instead of waiting for Dawes. Yes they got pick 20 as a sweetener but that's somewhat unproven and could be anything from a best and fairest winner to a list clogger who is gone in a few years. Tim Broomhead, who was drafted, was highly regarded and touted as a higher pick so good on them, and they did prepare for the future and benefit the now so maybe not the best example. But I do believe that in a few years time it is a decision they will regret- maybe not a tear your hair out sort of shocker and not one in the regard of Trades that Hurt the Club as per the OP- but my base point is that teams shouldn't sacrifice the future for the now, and chosing Lynch, a forward who might contribute for 2 years, over Dawes, who will contribute for maybe 6-7, was shortsighted, even if they got a sweetener in a future pick.

Not to mention that Witts and Grundy will most likely develop into a killer Ryder/Bellchambers type combo which will give them another tall option up forward. Collingwood won't miss Dawes. No AFL team would miss Dawes.

Hindsight is an evil mistress. In 2001, we traded away picks - one to Geelong, who used it on Josh Kelly, the other to Adelaide, which could have been used on Dane Swan - for Clint Bizzell and Peter Vardy.
Maybe not terrible trades but what could have been could have been better.

- Traded pick #7 to get pick #10 and Chad Morrison. There were other pieces that moved around but Hawthorn got pick #7 and picked up Jordan Lewis ... we got stuck with Chris Egan. I dunno if we would have drafted Lewis with #7 but would love him playing for Collingwood. Egan is gone and Morrison did NOTHING.

- Heath Scotland for pick #35. I'm sure it was #35 and Scotland has been a good player for a long time. I know we drafted Brent Hall with that pick and he was useless.

- Steven Mckee. We could have had Pavlich, I think.

Well I guess thats where we disagree. I dont think he's a list clogger and think he's quite a good 3rd Tall option. Yes he's had some difficulty but I still think he's viable going forward.

Mature age picks had been around well before the Harry Taylor pick. The Crows picking up Ben Hudson in the early 2000s is always an example I use here. It didn't just become popular because Geelong had one.
