Jack Watts is out of contract... What would be his current trade value?

Was thinking if BMac can turn Grant around... Maybe he could do the same with Watts. Similar types of players in my opinion.

If they're so similar, why would we want him?

They'll want waaaay too much for him anyway. I'd say they'll want close to a top 10-15 pick.

We may not get Gumby, Crameri, White or Boyd. Watts could play a leading forward role. Obviously not the preferred option, but I don't want to go around next year persisting with Cordy, Austin or Marko at full forward.

I don't see Watts as the answer at all. A thin leading forward isn't what we need.

Crameri is a good player. Don't get me wrong. I like him. But we only have so many assets to use each off-season, and id prefer we used them on other areas of the ground than 3rd forwards. I won't hit the roof if we get Crameri though.

If we get Crameri, we have to trade Grant. Jake isn't ready to push into the midfield and even after this preseason coming, he'll be nowhere near. That means he's one of our medium/tall forwards for the next 1-2 seasons at least and right now, Granty is the other. We need the big body sitting in the arc to take the #1 defender and release our other talented boys to play a less restricted role. Imagine Stringer with the worst defender on him, which is likely to happen with a gorilla key forward, Jones, then Grant and Dahl down there, things could get interesting!

Unfortunately this is one of those rare circumstances where Melbourne could select him in the PSD before us. However, I doubt they would because if it got to that point, the relationship is already long gone past repair.

Maybe they would be happy with a trade for Crossy

That's a very stupid thing to say. I don't think you understand the concept of players not always wanting to put themselves through the risk of a preseason draft, where they can be sent anywhere. GWS would snap him up in no time if he entered the draft.

Plus, who says he wants to go from one club that was years away from a premiership, to another that is also years away from a premiership?

I think we will be seeing Roberts very very soon, and I think the way he finishes the year is really important to our off season, if he finishes with some good form in the forward line it gives us another forward target that we know we have and if we cant get a reasonable priced forward throughout the trade period we can probably afford to wait til next year but if he doesn't play a game and we keep going with just Jones and Grant then we will probably need to find one somewhere, even if its just to keep everyone happy

That would be considered draft tampering. You can't offer a player a contract if they're entering the draft. The only thing the player can do is put a 'reserve price' on his head which clubs must reach. GWS will have more money than us,if they want him, he's theirs. He won't enter the draft, anyway. Melbourne will either keep him (the smart thing to do) or trade him.

Agreed that a KPF would be number 1 but i'd still take Crameri or Watts.

Interestingly, i can't remember who it was on SEN, maybe Dermott, but they were talking about why Jeremy Cameron is killing it. He stated that a new breed of key forward is coming into play where they are just a tad smaller than a monster KPF but have very good agility. This is because teams have all groomed one or two backmen to be monster KPD to combat the KPF. Thus the new breed like Cameron burns them. Having a number of pretty good 3rd talls may not be that bad if it creates a few mismatches and possibly the other team to defend differently than they are used to. Play on our terms rather than theirs.

We didn't draft him because 1) We didn't want him and 2) We couldn't afford him. Its not similar at all. Tippett came out and said I'm going to Sydney and they're going to pay me $900,000 a year. Nobody except GWS could match that and to be honest, they didn't think he was worth it. Jack Watts isn't going to say that, in fact I believe he will stay with Melbourne as soon as they sign a permanent coach.

Agree with this to a point. I do think size is overrated in the forward line in particular. We were a super scoring team during the prelim run with guys like Hahn and welsh as our key forwards. Ball movement around the ground and footy smarts up forward are more important than anything.

I could see Crameri, grant, jones and stringer being an effective quartet. But would I prefer a big power forward? Yes. And would I prefer we used our cash/picks on adding something other than another medium forward? Yep.

Umm.. that's what most clubs do. You've just stated the bleating obvious. Why would we be the only club to offer him a contract? And why would we want or need him in the first place? We've got a lot of medium tall forwards on our list. I'd argue that this is one of the deeper parts of our playing stocks. Dickson, Grant, Stringer, Addison, Higgins. Watts won't be the bullocking key forward to take the pressure off of Jones. No point getting him when we can focus on a greater need.

Clubs don't draft players who want to go elsewhere. It's almost never done, and I've never heard of it going down well. Give an example, if you will.
