Spoke with the woman I work with who is family friends with the McCarthy's and she said they have been invited over to be at the draft in person. They really only do this for the top 10 don't they? That would lead me to think Brisbane will probably take him with pick 7.

It just means you are being considered with a top 10 pick, crozier was invited and did not go top 10.

I reckon Footy Tragic's power rankings thread seem like a pretty good listing. If we can land Acres, I think we will be laughing. Same for WC with Sheed.

I can only go on the various profiles and videos available, but I'm struggling to see how Sheed and Acres seem to be rated by most outside the top 5-6, and usually outside the top 10. Maybe there is some WA bias from my point of view, but there also must be some east coast bias in pumping up some of the others.

Zac Jones has been described as a quicker, bigger version of his brother. I'd be more than happy with that at 17.

Quite a bit rawer, but all the tools look to be there. From the little I've seen he's a pretty decent kick too.

I wouldn't be unhappy at all if we picked him up. Would still like McCarthy or Acres instead though.

It fails every year, typical AFL Telstra website bulldust.

The AFL draft tracker never seems to update until a few hours later, however it is useful tool then.

I'll be at my work xmas party tomorrow night and will be sneaking away with my phone to keep a track and be listening to it on SEN.

Lach72 can you setup the "Welcome Pick #17 Player" threads tomorrow night and add the info etc?
Someone needs to step up and give great effort tomorrow night.

Is it weird that I get more excited for the draft than for christmas?

From what all the journos have been saying I think that McCarthy will be gone long before our pick, but there will still be a bunch of talented kids to pick from at 17. Im hoping we go for a key back, key forward is more glamorous but a decent key back is more important to being competitive.

Check this out. Latest draft from inside footy.
Round 1
1. GWS Giants
Tom BOYD | Eastern Ranges | 22/8/95 | H: 199cm | W: 102kg
Described as a once in a generation player, Boyd will quickly make the Giants forget about missing out on Lance Franklin to their crosstown rivals. He thoroughly deserves his crown as the king of his draft class.

2. GWS Giants
Josh KELLY | Sandringham Dragons | 12/2/95 | H: 183cm | W: 75kg
Kelly could well have gone in last year’s mini-draft, such is the regard he is held in amongst club recruiters and he will add some class on the outside for the Giants.

3. St Kilda
Jack BILLINGS | Oakleigh Chargers | 18/8/95 | H: 184cm | W: 78kg
Of all the midfielders in this draft, Billings is clearly the one that can be labeled as a potential match winner. He will shift from half forward into the onball rotation as his tank improves.

4. Western Bulldogs
Marcus BONTEMPELLI | Northern Knights | 24/11/95 | H: 191cm | W: 83kg
Bontempelli’s draft stocks have soared to such an extent he now looks to be headed to the kennel, and wouldn’t make it past Brisbane if he was overlooked here. As one of the youngest players in the draft, his upside is enormous.
In the mix: James Aish

5. Gold Coast Suns
Kade KOLODJASHNIJ | Launceston | 9/8/95 | H: 190cm | W: 81kg
Guy McKenna spoke about the need for his club to add a running half back during trade week and Kolodjashnij fits the bill nicely with his composure and sure ball use. He may well develop into a full-time midfielder in years to come as well.

6. Collingwood
Matt SCHARENBERG | Glenelg | 18/9/95 | H: 190cm | W: 89kg
I rate Scharenberg as the second best player in the draft so this is a bargain for the Pies. Forget the foot concerns, he will be a star in black and white in a number of roles.
In the mix: James Aish, Christian Salem

7. Brisbane
James AISH | Norwood | 8/11/95 | H: 184cm | W: 75kg
Touted as a top-three lock pre-season, Aish has slowly dropped down the draft order but he is a sublime talent with ball in hand and almost always makes the right decision.
In the mix: Matt Scharenberg.

8. North Melbourne (F/S)
Luke McDONALD | Werribee | 9/2/95 | H: 188cm | W: 85kg
The son of former Roo and football boss Donald has honed his game in the VFL this year and should be ready to step in at half-back from Round 1, 2014. Pick No. 8 is the right value for a player of his talents.

9. Melbourne
Nathan FREEMAN | Sandringham Dragons | 16/6/95 | H: 182cm | W: 85kg
The Dees will have to agonize over a pair of Sandringham Dragons with Salem and Freeman still on the board and could go either way. Ultimately, Freeman’s power and speed is a better compliment for the likes of Viney, Trengove, Jones, Tyson and Toumpas.
In the mix: Christian Salem

10. Collingwood
Christian SALEM | Sandringham Dragons | 15/7/95 | H: 183cm | W: 81kg
The Pies have had an eye on the Dragons ball winner for a while and could have even taken him at No.6 if things panned out differently. They will be thrilled to land two players of the quality of Scharenberg and Salem.
In the mix: Ben Lennon

11. West Coast
Dominic SHEED | Subiaco | 10/4/95 | H: 184cm | W: 83kg
West Coast traded back from pick No.6 safe in the knowledge that their main target would still be available. Sheed will be ready to play from Round 1 and will help regenerate the Eagles midfield.

12. Richmond
Ben LENNON | Northern Knights | 5/7/95 | H: 188cm | W: 77kg
Richmond should end up with either Lennon or Christian Salem, and for that they will be thrilled. Either one fits a need and they have both been on their radar for a long time.
In the mix: Christian Salem

13. Carlton
Patrick CRIPPS | East Fremantle | 18/3/95 | H: 192cm | W: 90kg
Carlton could easily be tempted by McCarthy, but having only previously been thought of as a second round pick, Cripps is a bit of a bolter and has been likened by East Fremantle watchers to Jobe Watson as a big bodied midfielder.
In the mix: Cameron McCarthy, Luke Dunstan

14. GWS Giants
Lewis TAYLOR | Geelong Falcons | 17/2/95 | H: 173cm | W: 73kg
If Taylor were 10cm taller, he would have been off the board in the top handful of picks, but despite the height concerns the GWS are huge fans.
In the mix: Tom Cutler, Darcy Gardiner.

15. Sydney
Tom CUTLER | Oakleigh Chargers | 20/2/95 | H: 190cm | W: 85kg
Sydney will choose between the gifted small forward (Merrett) and the attacking defender in Tom Cutler. Ultimately, they opt for Cutler given their need to regenerate their rebounding defensive stocks.
In the mix: Tom Cutler

16. Geelong
Zak JONES | Dandenong Stingrays | 15/3/95 | H: 181cm | W: 74kg
Geelong are known admirers of the brother of Demon Nathan and love his competitiveness and no-frills attitude. He is a good fit at the Cattery and should provided good service.
In the mix: Blake Acres, Tom Cutler

17. Fremantle
Cameron McCARTHY | South Fremantle | 1/4/95 | H: 195cm | W: 89kg
Freo finally gets the young forward they have craved for a few years in the high-flying excitement machine. He will take some time, but the wide-open space of Patersons Stadium should suit his game perfectly. If he’s gone, Acres could be the pick.
In the mix: Blake Acres, George Hewett

18. St Kilda

Lloyd said Freo would look to fill needs at Thursday’s Draft, but that didn’t stop at tall players.

“I think you would have found last year that we went really tall through the Draft period,” he said.

“We brought in Tanner Smith, Jack Hannath, Matt Taberner and Craig Moller.

“We also added Danyle Pearce through free agency and this year we were able to acquire Colin Sylvia through free agency, which adds to our midfield depth, and we added a key forward in Scott Gumbleton.

“Obviously we’ll be filling some specific needs for certain types throughout the Draft, but you can’t be silly about it with each pick. You need to make sure the talent matches that pick as you go.”

Sounds like his mantra.

Agree with him to a point. But there is also no point saturating the list with one type of player and then trading them away for next to nothing. But I can understand that he doesn't want to reach too far for a tall that he is not convinced by. [shrug]

Got to say I'm pretty jealous that there is a good chance you guys will get a shot at either McCathney or Acres at 17. Both would be massive bargains.

Happy with either of them, and to be honest a few others I would not mind could be there too. While we need some tall timber, next years draft seems a strong option, so if Acres is the one, so be it. No point having a bog ordinary KPP (Murphy) and passing up a potential gun mid (Mundy).

Looks like Carlton might pick up Cripps. Is there anyone between their pick and ours that would be looking at picking him up?
