An inside midfielder with a booming right foot and sure hands overhead, Martin impressed greatly in his 13 VFL games in 2013. He earned some big possession tallies and regularly impacted on the scoreboard despite being heavily tagged each week. He broke through to play senior football mid-season and did not look out of place. His hard-nosed approach and appetite for goals will make him a player to watch in 2014.

SEASON BY SEASON
Martin’s meteoric rise from local football to the biggest stage of all was one of the best stories of 2013. Collingwood snaffled him with its first selection in last December’s Rookie Draft after initial interest from Essendon and Melbourne and he quickly set about making a name for himself as a proven ball magnet. He was given an opportunity in the NAB Cup and quickly looked at home, averaging 12 disposals and winning four clearances against the Eagles in Perth. The ex-Frankston centreman burst out of the blocks at VFL level, winning 34 possessions and kicking three goals in the first round win over North Ballarat. It prompted opposition teams to start paying closer attention and Werribee and Frankston were able to restrict him to only 29 disposals across the next fortnight. He sprung to life with 36 touches against Bendigo and rarely let up, saving his best for Essendon in round seven when he had 29 possessions, won 10 clearances and kicked six goals from the midfield. The match committee put him straight on the plane to the Gabba to take on Brisbane the following Friday and he did not look out of place, gathering 19 possessions, laying six tackles and kicking two goals from four scoring shots. Martin held his place in the side for the next three games, booting three goals against Melbourne on the Queen’s Birthday. His run came to an end when he was substituted out of the match against Port Adelaide during the third quarter, leaving him to spend the remainder of the season accumulating big numbers in the VFL. He almost singlehandedly dragged the Magpies over the line against North Ballarat and was one of the best afield in the loss to Port Melbourne in the Elimination Final despite receiving close attention from his Borough opponents. Martin’s fine season was capped off when he won the Joseph Wren Memorial Trophy as Collingwood’s best-and-fairest VFL player, while he also received nine votes in the J.J. Liston Trophy across the course of the year.

Why bother? We've already got a Martin who is a gun at state level.

There's a chance that Goddard might slide into the teens, would we take him if he is available?

We need James Aish, kids going to be sooooo good it's not funny. I'm a huge fan, also to the guy that's mentoring him.. You're doing a fantastic job.

Aish's mentor is Ablett Jnr.

Before he was drafted it was.

Now it is some bloke named Simon Black.

Two years from now it will be a fella known as Mark Ricciuto ;)

Honestly though I think he will sign for a further two years with Brisbane and if after those 4 years your team is still in the bottom half of the ladder he would consider coming home. Been to Brisbane & the Gold Coast a few times and if you are in a good spot and like the heat, it is the dream lifestyle. Just depends if homesickness is a factor.

I'm not confident based on a few things I've heard. That said, he looked to be enjoying himself last night.

He is going to be selected every week so he won't be leaving for lack of opportunity. If we lose him after his initial contract the AFL will have nowhere to hide and will have to admit there is a serious issue.

Care to elaborate on those things you have heard?

Just the same old whispers heard with Polec and Docherty. Also the same ones heard with Leuenberger and Rich in their first contracts, so who knows.

I'll just hold on to the "a lot can happen in 2 years" mantra.

Fair enough.

I agree it's a real issue the AFL need to look at. It affects us to an extent, however we at least have a reasonable production line of kids we can either draft or trade home.

Last year I was researching living in Syd as my job may take me back there and was looking at footy pathways if my kid goes that way. Almost impossible to find a school that plays AFL and the only real pathway was local club then to Swans academy. I think you have something similar but not sure it's enough.

I know people deride this academy set up because it gives you and the Swans a chance at by passing the draft, but in context of having such thin pathway infrastructure it seems like the least the AFL can do. A kid like Lachie Weller just has to find his way to Brisbane somehow (GCS don't need anything more).

We can only hope that the game grows so that the grass roots can provide more kids, but with so much competition from both rugby's and now soccer I can't see it getting too much better unfortunately..

Aish was enormous last night. Would require something pretty significant to get him from Brisbane.

Gorringe is certainly worth going for, would rather Trade for a tall that has been in the system for a couple of years and then use our high draft picks for midfielders.

I've heard from a few people that Luke Russell is someone the Crows (and also Pear) have been looking at. Tasmanian. 186cm/82kg.

A consistent no-frills half-forward who keeps getting the job done for Gold Coast.

Russell played 18 games last season, averaging 15 disposals, including 24 touches and two goals in an upset win over North Melbourne.

Runs hard, is quick and has a good leap.

Russell also works hard defensively and can cover several positions.

So whats the issue at Brisbane? I would prefer to live in Brisbane than Sydney, yet Sydney doesnt seem to suffer too much and infact attract big names. I realize that its been a hard slog for you guys lately but even Port kept most of their young talent when they were shit, unfortunately.
Is it clicky group of guys there or something that doesnt make the young kids feel at home?

Would take our first rounder I would have thought, which is likely to be around 8/9 which is actually where he was drafted. Would take Aish over the pick purely due to him being an outside highly skilled player, something that likely won't be around that pick.

97%/3% 85%/41% and an emerging cultural shift brought about by free agency that makes players comfortable in naming their destination. That and we're poor and underperforming.

I'll take off now, not really keen on a debate. If you guys want to say it is purely cultural, it's your board.

Try 12 months ago but was never a mentor. He spend some time with GAJ as part of the AIS AFL internship.

He would have a mentor from the BLFC.

It really is ridiculous that Brisbane don't get the same retention allowances as the other rugby state sides. If anyone has a case for one it is them. To me their CEO needs to come out and be a lot louder about it in the press. I had no idea they had lost >50% first round draftees until that article last week, but even that wasn't club driven.

I'll say it though, if they don't draft Lachie Weller they're not serious about adressing the problem.

They're already getting Hammelmann and Dawson as zone selections (both about 18-25 prospects) with likely a 3rd and 4th rounder. Since Chris Judd left West Coast have drafted kids from WA nearly every pick and it's why they've got such an unbalanced list, they've overlooked better prospects in favour of the safe, no homesick option and look at their list as a result. It's a difficult situation but Brisbane will likely have a top 3 pick. If they choose to jump the gun on a bloke who's probably an 8-12 selection just to avoid that, well, it's the beginning of the end. Especially when there's so much KPP talent at the top this year. They should risk it and draft Wright/McCartin as without someone like that, they're boned anyway.

Having seen the last quarter of the Dogs/Dees game, Frawley is a terrible decision maker. Some severe panic under pressure which gifted the dogs a couple of vital late goals. Hope the list management staff swa that and put a line through him as a FA target

Sure, they can draft Wright or McCartin. If they only want them for 2 years.
