I think its his marking that will allow him to become an A grader or maybe even top 50 AFL.

He has added big overhead marks to his game. He had a crack at a few in his second and third year but they didn't stick. Now he is taking quite a few. This aligned with his deadly kicking and gut running will help him win games off his own boot in a few years.

Showed a bit of that vs. the Bombers!

Has improved this year. Is now in the top 10 players the club. Don't see him becoming a champion though. Will be a very good player for the club like Kelly, Corey, Milburn and Riccardi before him without becoming an elite of the competition.

Id be more than happy for him to be an equal amongst the champions of the club you have listed.

How good has this bloke become!

Not so much the number of possessions but it's been his gut running and second half work which has been a huge factor in helping us win a few close games.
Quite underrated as well because while they carry on about the 'veterans getting us over the line', some of Duncan's last quarters have been Bartel-like. . . kicking goals, taking timely marks and setting up plenty of goals.

(Guthrie is another who has taken it upon himself to lift in close matches this year)
You can add his contested ability to the list as well. I dont know whos responsible for our woeful set up at clearences this year but I cant see why Duncan cant develop as another A grade mid.

Agree with all the talk about 'veterans getting us over the line' is overstated. If people (including commontators) could actually pay attention and watch games properly they would realise that the most important Geelong players right now and this year are Hawkins, Duncan and Motlop, hardly veterans. I would also say the rest of our youngsters are outperforming the veterans easily.

I think it varies game by game. Some games the veterans are just awesome (e.g. Kelly and Bartel against North), but naturally due to age they won't be as consistent week to week. For the same reason Guthrie and Horlin-Smith and Motlop aren't going to dominate every week either, they'll have great weeks and down weeks until they get another season or two under their belt. But agree completely, it's a much more even spread of contributors than some commentators would like to think.

I don't think Mitch will ever be a centre square player.
Not that it matters. You only have about 25 bounces a game, and 25% of those are called back and everyone goes in anyway.

Fair enough. I think more than half the disagreements on here are purely based on having a different interpretation of words. I view a champion as a player who in his best couple of years is in the top 20 players in the competition. Those players I mentioned were in the 20 to 50 bracket in their best years and that's where I see Duncan getting to.

it's not just centre square bounces but stoppages. Having said that though, Duncan is the bloke you want the ball in his hands once Selwood and Christensen extract it out as he's one of, if not the best user going forward.
He's definitely been playing inside midfielder at times this year and with his aerial abilities, gut running and size, he could become a real weapon which would allow Johnson to back off a little given he won't be there forever.
Absolutely.
He's the guy you want getting it third, just ahead of centre.

If I have a knock him. (and it's a very weak one) I'd like to see his kicking into 50 improve.
He kicks a very nice drop punt, but I'd like more bullets.

And I'm talking an additional 10 a year. So not much.

When Brayshaw asked Mitch today whether there was a draw to return home to Perth he said something along the lines of it's something he thinks about as all his family are there but is contracted for another 12 months.

Was hoping for something more along the lines of I'm loving playing for the Cats and see myself playing out my career with them.

There was a bit of positive stuff in there too. CS signing a longer term contract pleased him. Still, he was one of Ablett's best friends. Let's hope the Ablett "only care what's in it for me" attitude hasn't been passed on.

bring him into the center square now?
That's a very good question and he's now got the body to hold up in the tackles as well as cop some of those heavy hits that inside midfielders endure in game. Good size at 6ft'2/87kg.

Future Captain?

Vice captain within 2 years IMO.
They could make it as soon as next year

Bit harsh on current VC Taylor - not sure he has done much wrong to lose that role just yet. Maybe we look at the structure we had back in 07/08: C- Harley, VC - Ling & Deputy VC Corey; but this time C - Selwood, VC - Taylor & Deputy VC Duncan (or Guthrie;))

Why not joint captains or joint vice captains?

Nah joint captains are dumb.

That's why they have leadership groups.
Depends on the individual circumstances. Some clubs don't have the benefit of a player who possesses both strong on-field and strong off-field leadership. It 's not a one cap fits all decision. It's dumb to apply the same principle without taking account of individual circumstances.

Love to hear one instance of where you think it worked.

It was dumb by Melbourne.
And completely gutless when we had 3 captains.
