Love to hear one instance of where you think it worked.

It was dumb by Melbourne.
And completely gutless when we had 3 captains.
Swans. St Kilda. Both teams had success during that period. It's preferable not to have dual captains. Dumb not to look at what's best in the circumstances. Repeat. Applying a one cap fits all in any situation is mindless.

Future Captain?

Seems a bit laconic, from what we see in the media, for that role, I reckon. And he even seems like he could have just a slight dash of Billie Smedts space cadetishness in him.

Obviously a lot of guesswork involved from the outside looking in, but I would have thought, just going by the way our younger players carry themselves, that a guy like Guthrie, or even GHS would seem a more logical choice.

Of course, Selwood could quite easily be a 10-year captain, which might mean our next captain hasn't been drafted yet, because you'd have to think twice about giving a guy the gig when he's 29+.

Bit harsh IMO. Mitch is a much more polished media performer than he used to be, and generally speaking does seem to have matured a lot since his arrival at the club. I also remember reading an article last year in which Duncan was mentioned as one of the best trainers at the club, so from what I can tell Duncan's professionalism is excellent, whereas Smedts' propensity to put himself in embarrassing situations makes it seem like he's unaware of what is expected of him as an professional sportsman and public figure.

I'm going more along the lines of, as he put it when he was introduced as a new member of the leadership group: 'I'm not the smartest tool in the shed...'

Though, I guess, the Selwoods have always said Joel was the dunce of the classroom, so we might be able to take it with a grain of salt.

Speaking of Duncan, we need a big game from him this week. He was very quiet against Carlton, which wasn't what we needed, with Johnson out and Selwood having little influence after the first quarter.

I think Mitch would be a great Lingy bridging-type captain. He's already started involving the newer boys into the fold and helping them adjust to a big intimidating setting like the senior team (which I'm sure it is), since he went through it not all that long ago. He also knows when to be a goof and when to put the game face on, which is something some struggle to grasp. His onfield leadership qualities are obvi well on their way too. I think he's absorbed so much of how other, greater players around him lead, act and play for the last 5 seasons. It's a testament to the club, I think.

While captains should generally be able to elaborate on the standard "yeah, nah, boys did great" (sic) Mitch can hold his own in a media setting. They're giving Thursday media conferences to the young ones a lot these days, GHS, Cam, Josh Caddy, Mitch have all had a go. GHS and Cam are definitely of the calmly and well-thought out answer mould. Very unfootballer-like of them! It's worth a search just to get an idea of their media capabilities if you're curious about that sort of thing. But they have all obviously listened in media training. I don't think any of them are at Menz's level but he's at a much greater advantage, unfortunately.

Btw he's only 4 games away from the big 1-0-0! That's scary. This is the same draft year of Bundy, Vards, Menz and J Cowan. If only 2 more out of that four had the same number of games. Wouldn't that be something.

Great game, that's what was driving everyone crazy last year because we know how good he is.
For some reason he is my favourite player to see get a goal.

As much as the commentators were typically frothing about Dangerfield (and he and Selwood were both good), I thought Duncan was clearly BOG.
The more touches he gets the better. I know that sounds simplistic but Duncan's touches are different to those of , say, Tom Mitchell or Priddis. Duncan makes his count, whether it be around the ground or when within range of goal. Terrific game.

The biggest highlight of Mitch's games last night was his poise in congestion. We know he can hit targets in space, but his work under pressure was first class.
I can't count the number of times he turned down a questionable option, only to hold on and take the best option. He was best on, closely followed by Selwood for mine.

He is just such a lovely user of the ball, gets in his hands forward of centre and more often than not it ends well for us

Excellent game, came as no real surprise though, career high averages in disposals, tackles, inside fifties and clearances last year yet he copped plenty of flak for some reason, quality player who looks set for (another) good year.

Agree..
Mitch was certainly a much clearer presence than I recall in recent times. Not sure if it's the contract, the dad thing, or just being nowhere near Mummy. Probably just Mummy - let's keep it that way.
