No way that (dangerfield idea) would happen, but the frawley/pick 3 situation got me thinking.

As you said, melb and Gc had something going on behind closed doors with viney, and nothing happened.

It just all depends on whether or not we can use the compensation as leverage to benefit us, without breaking the rules.

We can definitely do it, with the NDS/Delaney deal last year there would have been lots of talk between the clubs about 'will you pay him enough to get us band 3' and then North going to the afl to confirm what the compo pick would be.

Similarly we could say to Melbourne 'he comes on the money Rivers did which means you get pick 20' or we pay him enough to get you pick 3, but only if you give us something in return.

Where your proposal falls down is that a) Varcoe only wants to go back to SA and b) they would want a lot better than Varcoe for pick 2. For example if we offered them Duncan they would most definitely give us pick 2, but we wouldn't do that.

So I think we need to get another ruck at year's end (unless we are already planning a big play at a free agent like Lobbe next year) keeping in mind Hamish is 30 and needs regular rests and we can't assume Vardy will be fit either.

I have compiled a list of rucks who I think are gettable in terms of they are a) not spuds b) might see good gametime options for themselves at Geelong and c) are gettable with the picks that we will have (keeping in mind we will have late picks this year) and the fact we are unlikely to trade key players out.

I agree, but there are some players who have cultural value beyond the business of the trade, and he is that for them, and you don't put those players up for trade no matte what you are going to get back. It would be like us trying to trade Selwood, just would never happen.

Good list - I've got a few comments.

I can't see the Hawks giving us anything. They wouldn't really be weakening their list per se but strengthening ours. Not good policy.

Griffin has gone from Adelaide to Freo, I don't think he's up for a move, Sandi is cooked soon so they'll want to hang onto Griffin. Hannath is a bit too small and could end up playing as that awkward forward/ruck that doesn't really work so well.

Warnock is shit.

Brisbane would be loath to move Martin on and again it would be his 3rd club. Though if he's keen for a return to Victoria? I think Luenberger will be more gettable than Martin (though I've had enough with injury prone ruckman) I want one fresh from the package

On balance I would say Melbourne keep Gawn.

WC just re-signed Sinclair though given Lycett is clearly number 1 and NicNat number (or 2 and 1 whatever) he might be on the move. Great size and perfect age.

Currie too. Though it's a worry that he hasn't been able to break into the North side with all their injuries (I mean Christ they were playing Daw ahead of him).

I like Gorringe and don't know enough about Phillips but he'd be GWS' 3rd or 4th choice so we should get in his ear. Again right size and age profile.

Campbell I like the look of on paper. That's all I know about him.

There's a lot out there but dealing in ruckmen is tricky area. They are often worth far more to the side chasing them then the side who has them. North don't have to get rid of Currie, for example, but he'd be worth a lot to us. If they don't move him on no biggie for them. Big problem for us. So often you end up paying overs. Unless the ruck wants to go.

A bit of a ramble but yeah my thoughts.

manboob Hawthorn won't have a choice, Lowden and Grimley are both out of contract and will look to move, and Ceglar had offers from other clubs last year (which was why they had to upgrade him). If we were to offer them a good deal they would deal with us.

On Griffin I am pretty sure I read that he went back home because he had a relative who had cancer (his dad I think?) who is now ok, so he might be ready to move again. Lyon will hang onto Sandi as long as he can because he is desperate for a flag, and Clarke is the preferred successor, so either Griffin or Hannath will move this yea (although probably not both).

Guys like Sinclair and Currie are under contract so we can't get them for pick 60, but they will look to force moves for gametime given Currie is behind Goldy and Sinclair behind Nicnat and Lycett, and I think neither would cost a first rounder. Currie is a better player than Daw but he can't play together with Goldstein as neither can play as a forward, and Brad is committed to the 90 % Goldy plus pinch hitting fwd/ruck model, this is the whole reason Hamish left even though he didn't want to, as Brad won't play 2 specialist rucks, and Currie will look to go for the same reason.

The other one I forgot who will clearly be on the move is Giles from GWS, given they don't want to play 2 rucks, at 26 he is not gonna hang around. That said Port need a ruckman as desperately as us, and given their failed pursuit of Lycett they are probably right into him given he was peviously on their list, and he is another we should be enquiring about who is gettable.

Again this is why I think FA can really help us. Pick up a replacement backman for nothing and use that pick to trade for another ruck. I think a good idea this year would be another Wells special e.g. our first pick at 19 into a couple later ones which we can trade for rucks. Though GWS might want a couple of players rather than picks.

Giles is useful, he is no star but he is very very durable and a good ruckman and would help our clearance issues. We could probably get him for either a late 20s pick or a pick upgrade (GWS will probably want to upgrade their picks given list size issues)

I think you take one mature guy so he can play every game if we want to play rucks, or can chop out for the weeks when Hamish needs a rest, which there will be plenty, and draft one young ruck (although the crop is not as good this year as some years).

You then see how they are going next year, and talk to Hamish about whether he is retiring or not, and this determines whether we trade/free agent another ruck again at end 2015. A lot depends on whether his body has any more years after next year in it, and we won't know that until the middle of next year I think.

Walker's not a ruck unless we are in an emergency so I don't think he fits into the discussion about rucks.

Kersten still hasn't signed a new contract but he hopefully will, I think all of him and Vardy and Walker will stay with Brown going, although I know Walker has attracted some interest from a couple of clubs, and then maybe at the end of next yea we will lose one of them.

I just hope Brown gets these two weeks to save himself. He will surely play this week and Hawkins will almost certainly be rested in the last round so that should be another opportunity.

His career really is on a knife edge, in a month's time he could be playing in a Prelim Final, or his AFL career could be over.

I'd still prefer keeping him, unless we bring in another experienced tall forward. I don't think we can assume Vardy and Menzel will be fit next year.

What do you think now with Kerstens injury? Rest Hawkins also and play Walker / Brown? Let them fight it out for a spot in finals? (Presuming no VFL Finals of course)

Apparently the coaches are keen to revert to 4 interchange players and remove the sub. The AFL have said they will only do this if there is a reduction in interchange rotations.

Unlikely to happen in 2015 but I feel it is a distinct possibility from 2016 onwards.

As the introduction of the sub rule caused many clubs to move from playing two rucks to just one,I feel the possible reversal of this rule may make playing two ruckman more likely generally.

From my perspective this makes it more imperative that we recruit at least one ruckman and make it our highest priority. Unfortunately, it may make ruckman overall a more valuable league commodity and we may have to pay even more than we like.

HMac is a decent upgrade on West but on his own he isn't going to win a flag.
Blicavs isn't a ruck, he is a great extra mid who can ruck 15%

I'd rookie list a ruck(if we have a spot) and then use a 2nd or 3rd rounder to pickup another.

I think it's better to have too many good rucks like West Coast cos you can always trade one out for good value.

I think Currie would be a good get cheap, he at least is a good size and 25 is still young for a ruck.
