KIERAN Harper has emerged as a key part of the deal North Melbourne is putting together in an attempt to lure Western Bulldog Adam Cooney to Arden Street.

AFL.com.au understands Harper, 22, has completed a medical test with the Bulldogs and is open to the possibility of a change of club after struggling with injury and form over the past two seasons.

North met with Cooney last Friday, but faces stiff competition from Essendon to win his signature.

However, the 2008 Brownlow medallist is contracted to the Bulldogs for next season and remains a chance to stay.

Cooney is understood to have had a strained relationship with ex-coach Brendan McCartney this year, with the latter's departure from the Whitten Oval last Friday a possible factor in Cooney's decision.

The 29-year-old returned from a holiday on the Gold Coast on Tuesday afternoon to make a final decision on his football future ahead of the end of trade period at 2pm on Thursday.

It is understood North's offer for Cooney will also involve an exchange of draft picks, with the Roos' second-round pick, No. 36, possibly also in play.

Little more than 18 months ago, Harper was widely considered one of North's brightest young talents, having shown glimpses of line-breaking run and freakish goal sense that suggested he was a star in the making.

At the time, Harper had played 37 games in two years at Arden Street and was rated almost as highly as fellow 2010 draftee Shaun Atley.

However, Harper was dropped after the first three rounds of 2013 and has not played a senior game since.

Harper was the No. 27 pick in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft.

I dont mind this, especially if they are adding Harper + 36 means we are obviously upgrading a pick somehwere.

People should of been resigned to Harp's a long time ago, getting 10 touches a game for 2 years in a league, half of which is made up by part time footballers is the writing on the wall.

I could pluck 100 country footballers that would of whooped Harper's ass in the VFL over the last 2 years.

Makes you wonder how many guys playing in how many suburban leagues both in Metro & Country would've done more with the VFL/AFL list spot than Harps.

Kieran Harper could be on the move to the Dogs as part of Cooney deal. Has completed a medical test http://bit.ly/1v6QEm9
Do you know what? we can't keep everyone.

Arden street nearly got burnt down when Hmac was on the trade table and how has that turned out.

Harper may do a Koby Stevens and enjoy the mediocrity/scenery at the Kennel but if we get a Brownlow medallist who gets us a Premiership it will be Keiran who to me. BTW - When was the last time we had a Number one draft pick in our team??

We wont be paying overs for cooney - just because its written that way - the club knows what its doing.
Very true, pick 36 will be upgraded for the doggies second and Harper will be swapped for Cooney.

Just doesn't have the footy IQ, and despite what a heap of you are laying down to injuries, Harper has played ALOT of VFL football in the last 3 years, I could probably count on 1 hand the amount of times he'd have had a game anything close to the 15 or odd Trent Dumont produced this year.

He had the same problems at the AIS, for Eastern and Vic Metro, alot of that was put down to injuries at the time, but you can't blame that now, 5 years is enough of a sample size, 6 days a week tutor-age in that time is enough to deduce the guy has no ****ing idea where to run on a VFL ground, let alone an AFL one..

Looks like Harper's gone is almost confirmed, such a shame, really like the guy and l wish the best of luck if he leaves, seems to be a very likable bloke. Like Pederson, l hope he makes it.

Kieran Harper has emerged as a key part of North's proposed deal for Adam Cooney. Story on http://AFL.com.au soon

No. Harps has had problems sure, but he's still very young and we know has talent/ attributes we need.

I understand our window is the next few years and Harps may not figure that large next season, where as Cooney will........ but still this is just no good.

Harper is the trade that has the potential to most embarrass us I reckon. If the kid gets his body (and head) right he can still be a gun.

Pretty bold approach from North, one (best 22) senior player out and 3 clearly talented players in while still retaining selections in the top 30 odd. None of that includes upgrades on Tippet & Turner who are both clearly in long term planning. They are certainly brave enough to gear up for a tilt and unlikely to mortgage the future to do so it seems. Will be plenty or pressure on the team to perform next year if all these go ahead. Good stuff.

I hope we have learnt from 2010.

We got a pick in trade (Hale) inbetween our first and our second so we traded out our 2nd. We traded for Richardson and missed out on Parker.

Just because we get 25 does not mean we should throw away 36. 36 is an early pick. You can't have to many of these.
