It could possibly have that effect, however I think it would even out fairly quickly as the TV coverage draws in new supporters. I don't follow the WAFL as much as I should, however the availability of the TV telecast on 7 may just boost my interest enough to want to attend more than just one/two games next year.
Yea fair point, I'll probly watch a few games, which normally I wouldn't.

WAFL and WAFC have got a bad business model atm.

WAFL have no major sponsor and want to PAY big dollars to 7 for FTA coverage?

It's debt thats only going to rack up, not get paid off.

You've got no idea, just stop.

The WAFC currently pay ABC to cover the WAFL. ABC no longer want to cover the WAFL and have a focus on covering womens sport and lesser covered sports. For the last few years the ABC have upped the amount they wanted from the WAFC to continue the coverage.

The cost of TV coverage on 7 will be covered by sponsorship, last I heard from AHG and possibly McDonalds. Not by the WAFC.

The WAFL pay part of the ABC's coverage.

They are currently going to fork out several hundred dollars for a FTA network to cover the sport, not from a sponsor.

TBH I didn't even know it was on ABC

Every Saturday for 25 years :)

Negotiations for a $350,000 deal from one major sponsor and four others at $200,000 each have fallen over.

Automotive Holdings Group and McDonald’s are believed to have been targeted to financially back the weekly telecasts on Channel Seven or Seven Mate.

Several hundred dollars? That's cheap
He probably meant to say couple several hundred thousand dollars.

The matter had been discussed at length on sports talk on 720. The figure floated back then was at least $500k. Corbain Middlemas was being quite aggressive about it, painted the picture as if it were the WAFL moving away from the ABC, spending dollars on FTA television that could be spent on grassroots.

In fairness to CH7 they're only getting involved because the ABC decided not to cover WAFL due to budget constraints. At least I think that's the case

If a commercial station didn't get involved there'd be no coverage
More of a political stunt by the ABC. I just hope the results I n some coverage in the east.
The commentary can only improve.

If they have to pay to broadcast it why wouldn't they do it Internet based.

As a gero resident I'd love to have all of East perths games - shit I'd happily pay 80 squid a year same as I do the afl online app.

They could make it a money spinner - even if you go to the games it's nice to watch it afterwards to analyse it more.

I would love to see the WAFL/SANFL/VFL approach the AFL and try to get the state league games (or at least some of them) packaged as part of the new AFL broadcast deal with 7 and Fox.

The exposure would be good for the state leagues, who the majority of the AFL playing stocks are developed through, so this could be seen as a positive for AFL (even though they are a different body to the state competitions - it could still be a win win)

It would lock in coverage for an extended period of time, rather than year to year coverage.

Ideally the WAFL would be willing to move some of their games from Saturday arvo to allow for features such as having East Perth play before Eagles home games, same for Peel & Freo. The TV production equipment would need to be in place for the AFL game so it would be a cost effective solution to get coverage. Still plenty of holes in this argument, such as 5.40 Friday night games, WAFL member gate takings/seating etc, but it would be something that could be worked on.

Yeah you are right, some coverage is better than none at all. On a side note, I was in Lathlain the other day, now that is a sad looking ground and I was only there three years ago. The quicker the WCE build their ground there the better.

Been to Claremont or East Freo Oval lately?

Lathlain is fine for it's purpose.

It's a construction site.

My point exactly ;)

It's been that long since I ventured across there that I had no idea
it was being redeveloped. I guess I have a sentimental attachment to
the Lathlain/Leederville/Old Perth Oval ground styles that makes me view them through
rose-coloured glasses. Their elevated grandstands are unbeatable for watching the game from though.

Brilliant idea a way for the AFL to give something back to the state leagues and generate some new viewers for the leagues.

Peel and Joondalup aren't too bad when it comes to viewing angle.

No I haven't, seen them on TV though. Looking pretty shabby as well yeah?

East Freo has always been a hole. Claremont likewise but as Eastern Rangers said, it's being revamped.

You're right about Lathlain though in terms of facilities and general upkeep. It will be great for Perth and the area when we move in there although I will miss the way it looks now though having grown up following the WAFL in the 80's.
