I genuinely believe this Dangerfield talk will go the same way as Boak and Frawley.

You are not alone and I have expressed this on more than one occasion.

I'd be disillusioned if we offered him a godfather deal - no way he deserves to be paid more than Selwood or Hawkins (the latter of whom we've still got to lock away).

I agee again. And the former talk on this board of trading Duncan to secure him horrified me.

And I can't fathom why he'd come to us for less than he could get at several other clubs especially when the outside perception is that we're on the way down, not up (apparently this was a factor in Frawley's decision).

Regardless of the outside perception of the Cats immediate future, I think that a number of clubs will probably be in a better position to lure someone like Dangerfield than the Cats. As you have mentioned, we still have to have something to offer Hawkins to keep him at home. And anyone who thinks that a player like Hawkins would not leave Geelong for a better contract elsewhere is deluded.

Hell, I would not be surprised if the Hawks trimmed off some of their excess aging mids to gain Dangerfield's services. They seem to have the uncanny ability to fill a hole with a player from another club.

The Crows will still be hurting from the losses of Tippett, Gunston etc and they will do everything in their power to not lose another star, even if it means a $1m a year, six year deal.

And that is another consideration. Tippett would have been on reasonable money and the Crows may have the cash to hold Dangerfield, or at least put him out of our reach.

And for him to come here, its gonna have to be driven by him wanting to be here. GFC just does not pay massive overs and i don't see this being really any different. It will be big no doubt - but not so big that it corrupts the ethos of the GFC - an ethos that has done us pretty well so far. It aint perfect but nothing is.

I thought it was Geelong's Ablett compensation pick finally trumped North's best offer which landed us the 21yr old.



Frawley, Boak, Adams and now Dangerfield are all high draft picks. Players aged between 21-25 yrs whereas Rivers and Clark are good but how many teams were lining up to secure Jared's signature?
While some clubs were not even interested in Mitch due to his long history with injuries.

I'm all for pumping up our own tyres by bringing up such names as Drum, Delaney and now Clark, but really, the only top draft pick we've managed to bring home since the pill was Josh Caddy (who was rumored to have nominated North Melbourne), so Dangerfield would be something from right out of left field if we secure his services for the next 5+ years at the Cattery.

Danger aside, none of those players are top self/elite/A graders. Boak is probably now, but he certainly wasn't considered that when we where drafting him. He got captain and apparently 800k odd to stay at Port,the rest are very good players (frawley) or ok at the moment (in Adams case)

Fact is, how many times have we gone in with huge offers for a player?

I can't really think of any if at all, so Danger will be our first massive offer we will do, even if we don't get him there is other decent FA's available that would be more then a welcome addition to our midfield. Scott Selwood and Jack Steven are both available.

I also address Rivers and Caddy above.

Caddy said a visit to Geelong several weeks ago, when he was shown around by skipper Joel Selwood and Brownlow Medallist Jimmy Bartel, helped convince him it was the place to be.

"They're definitely two of the players I admire most in the competition. To get to know them and learn off them is a dream really," he said.

1.We haven't even gone after a top shelf footballer, Danger will be the first.

2. They only player we've missed out on was Frawley which I've already explained a few times before why.

3. Boak wasn't a Free Agent, we would have had to trade.

4. Rivers picked us over Port, Hawks and Pies. While not top shelf, again our only Free Agent.

5. Caddy stated in one of his first interviews that he picked Geelong. He said meeting Bartel and Selwood as well as seeing our facilities made him pick us.

6. Norf got Dal Santo because Saints suck and Norf are better placed, the rest of their FA's are spuds, but Norf is better then Bulldogs, and Carlton.

7. Clark also picked us over Pies (not an FA though but he had a choice of clubs)

Overall, our strike rate isn't too bad considering. I also believe Balme (inb4twoweeksjoke) was the negotiator along with Wells, but now it'll be Hocking and Wells. (correct me if I'm wrong)

I guess the debate is pay structure , and if paying a lot up front to use RFA "corrupts the ethos" , A two year contract on brain melting sums ,,averaged out once he is here... is different to a Lance Franklin deal to my mind... but what ever the club does I guess the gun players will have to be onboard.

I don't quite understand this Rabbi. No matter what we offer Hawkins the reality is that there will be other clubs out there willing to offer him more money than what we will. So what you're basically saying is that Hawk is leaving due to being offered a bigger contract, cos that is what's going to happen.

sorry mate. Frawley is a Tom Harley/Matthew Egan/Tom Lonergan type. A footballer you build a team around. You take out anyone of those other blokes from Geelong and we simply aren't the same team. This is why I frmly believe losing out on Frawley set us back a few years because when the time comes to watch Lonergan and Rivers slowly but surely dip in form, we have absolutely no ready made replacement until 3 years further down the track when Kolodjashnij is consistent enough to match it with men.

If we are banking on Cameron Delaney to make a miraculous recovery from the 3 year stint spent in the physio rooms, we're in a lot more trouble than first thought.

Lake is what you build a team around (thinking of Hawks back-line), he is closer to Lonners then Frawley is. And if we're talking strictly defense I would pick Taylor over Lonners every day of the week to build the back-line around.

After watching Essendon and Gold Coast go through mediation during trade week, the year before, only to stay stuck up North, Caddy was probably told to pick a couple of teams next time to increase his chances of getting the deal done. Caddy wanting to make sure he got home ths time did just that. Gold Coast were most interested in Geelong's compensation pick and when Caddy walked into the club and got a great vibe and loved hearing how Selwood and Bartel could see a specific role for him he thought this is really good for everyone.
Being "first best friend" or "second best friend" is pretty irrelevant. A talented kid had many suitors and our pitch worked.

Boak said he changed his mind seven times. Dangerfield said he was 50-50% to come home two years ago. By many accounts Frawley had decided to come then changed his mind last minute. Taylor Adams said he was happy to go to Pies or Cats. Heath Shaw got an offer from the Giants and reportedly asked Geelong to up their offer so he'd have a choice. Mitch Clarke chose us over Collingwood. Stanley joined us knowing he has more competition here than the club he left. Hawthorn wanted Sam Blease.

Compared to 10-15 years ago, I get the impression we ARE now a club that people are very interested in joining.
