If it's pure persecution, where you don't know if you and your family are going to be murdered when you wake up, would you leave them to jump on a boat?

Just remember to skip the first few countries, travel halfway around the world, pay a people smuggler, destroy your documents, make a plausible (but hard to verify story) then claim asylum in a 1st world country.

Thanks for that.

The SMH and ABC love the headline story but when you read the report it's clear there are no allegations of torture against Australia. The so called Convention against Torture is actually named the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. It really detracts from the UN report to conflate horrific torture and murder of prisoners in the Philippines, Mexico, Morocco, Western Sahara, Uzbekistan, and Nigeria with (assumptions of) what is happening at Aussie controlled refugee camps.
Crikey thank goodness someone in the media has that covered then hey?

I'm not talking about Rudd. I'm talking about you thinking Trigg is some ALP plant. It's pathetic.

I didn't she was a plant. Strawman. I said she was biased.

She has changed her story multiple times about why she delayed the report. Denied having secret meetings with labour ministers about the timing of the report (which was later found out to be true).

Her (and your) silence when 2000 children were in detention only to pipe up when there was only 150 left (the other 1850 released by the evil government) says it all really.

What is really pathetic is your attempt to claim the moral high ground after you ignored (and continue to ignore) the thousands that died or that were put in detention by polices you supported.

Because it is irrelevant. What happened before 2013 is irrelevant in terms of the report and the behaviour contained in the report.

Triggs has more credibility than the entire Coalition front bench. To suggest otherwise is biased.

But they won't dare go into the content of the report as they used up all their compassion for the deaths at sea which was Labor's fault.
Have great difficulty in discussing the present.
Of course, Nauru is well equipped in medical terms and support services to assist the children that have been affected.

So people think placing people who have not been convicted nor even charged of committing a crime should be placed in indefinite detention as a means of discouraging others in risking their lives and attempting the same.

Whether it works in that purpose or not, do you honestly believe it is ethical and right?

They are not in indefinite detention.

They can go home any time they want.

How convenient.

Pretend history we don't like didnt happened and everything is okay.

Of course since we are ignoring history lets advocate for the same failed policies. If thousands end up dead or in detention we can just pretend it didn't happen again.

Here is the United Nations telling us that what we are doing to Asylum seekers is cruel and inhumane and amounts to nothing more than that of torture and the disgusting piece of shit that is our Prime Minister reckons that we should, instead of being criticised, we should get a medal and where is the f****ng Labor Party? hey? Where is the f****ng Labor party?

I'll tell you where they are, cowering in the corner because they disqualified themselves from being able to stand up for those in need, the less fortunate when they allowed that other piece of shit, Kevin Rudd, to try and 'out prejudice", "out bigot", try and blow the dog whistle louder and longer than the vile and immoral Abbott during the last election campaign.

We now have Rudd's legacy to Australia, Medieval Abbott, shamelessly denigrating the UN for "lecturing" us as if the UN is insignificant and yet this ***t, got that snake Bishop to vote against Palestinian statehood in the UN Security Council (needing nine yes votes to pass, there were 8 yes, 5 abstentions and the USA and Australia, NO) and thereby, condemning Palestinian's to remain in hell but why should we be f*****g surprised at Abbott's views on fellow human beings and on children in particular? In 2007, this disgusting throw back agitated for a return to corporal punishment in schools, "bring-back-the-strap"! This is the same bloke who wants to give the horrendous Morrison a medal for using the kids he locked up in inhumane and barbarous conditions in order to blackmail Muir to vote for TPV's!

Again, I ask the question, where is the Labor Party? You know, the "great upholders of equality and liberty for all", the ones who tell us that they fight for those less fortunate than others? They have a leader who facilitated the relentless undermining of a Labor Prime Minister by a filthy megalomaniac who was the absolute antithesis of a true believer.

This Shorten character had the numbers and the power to not only cast Rudd of into political oblivion but also, and the need arose, to use his influence to begin proceedings to expel him from the party but no and as a consequence, our warped Prime Minister can go around destroying Australia's dignity and reputation with outbursts that would make Putin proud and f*****g Labor and Shorten can't say a thing because they have no credibility.

You did not answer the question, is it ethical and right ? Why is so many refugees as well ?

Yes, and yes. Since we are not actually detaining anyone against their will. They are only in detention until such time as they drop their asylum claim, and they would never have been there in the first place if they had applied through proper channels.

If they are legitimate refugees, why did they destroy their passports, making it harder to assess their claim?

Those that do it tend to be told to do so by their smugglers.

But not all do that. Rather than make broad generalisations, is it ethical those who come by boat, who can be identified as legitimate refugees who face persecution or death if returned home, and who had no other alternative in fleeing their place of persecution, be otherwise detained indefinitely without having committed a crime?

They could have applied at the Australian Consulate in Jakarta before they got on the boat that left from Indonesia.

And live where and do what for the years it takes to get approved, majority of these people are desperate that's why they risk life to get here.
We should have kept out of their countries in the 1st place, after we bom the f..k out them in the name of peace destroy their homes and lives it's easy to see why you would want to get out.

I'm looking forward to Abbott's response to this one. If it happens it then means that he has only achieved one thing in 18 months of government in rolling back the Carbon Tax which hasn't achieved anything except making the rest of the world realise how much of an environmental backwater Australia is. You'd think that a country where so many people live by the water people would actually care about doing something to prevent sea levels rising.
