That is the question. I believe he is limited in his ability to see the game unfold before him based on what decision he makes with the ball. For example the best point guards in basketball are able to read the game and predict what will happen based on where they pass the ball and who they pass it to, all in the space of a split second. Priddis on the other hand panics and picks the first option he sees.

That is how it started originally
A question of his role / ability.
Some people questioned it 5 years ago and were met with a barrage of
"At least he gets it"
"Only one who tries"
"Coaches love him"
"He gets Brownlow votes"
"Look...stats stats and more stats"

So if you were to come on and declare that position that you have...that is now widely accepted 3-4 years ago you would have got the any of the above replies hidden behind a "oh I just don't like that you slag him off" gatekeeper response and here we are.

I don't think anyone is being hyper critical. I thought he did his role, did I think he was awesome in the clinches? No
Do I think he deserved near on BOG status by the coaches? No
Think people ... myself included are amused at the lauding he gets for executing basic skills like he tore the game apart with a ground ball win and handball.

The positive in all this is if our revamped midfield can continue this recent success with Priddis relegated to third or fourth rated mid than this thread is really over and everybody wins. All can take a backward step without loosing face. And everybody is happy because we are winning games. Wow.

I believe Priddis playing playing as a contested inside midfielder who extracts the ball and feeds it to classier, better decision makers is a useful role. I think he was one of many players who played a limited but pivotal role against Port.

Good point but I suggest this might change when the likes of Yeo and Duggan begin to run out games.

I honestly believe that these guys have what it takes to be top 10 in the AFL in time.

I think that Priddis played the role he was given well on the weekend. I realise that we need players at the bottom of the pack to feed the ball out, I just question whether the AFL still has a place for a player who is solely an inside extractor. It seems like the good midfields on the top quality, premiership caliber teams have a more flexible setup where sometimes a mid will be in and under the packs, sometimes bursting through packs, sometimes they'll play as an outside receiver, sometimes they'll play as a target in the forward line, Priddis can really only do the in and under effectively.
His defensive running is also a big deficiency in my eyes, he consistently hurts us by not keeping up with players running through the middle who often run further down field and receive the ball and are involved in scoring chains.

Yes I agree with this completely. Priddis is a role player but these two, along with the Shuey, can break a game open single handedly.

Over the past two weeks in particular, Yeo has been massive in the first half- a very dynamic player with a great blend of inside grunt as well as outside run and class.

He has tended to fade out in the second half of a game though, but just imagine when He strings together a complete, 4 quarter effort. Then add to that Shuey, Duggan (in a few seasons) and potentially Sheed and Gaff (although I wouldn't consider these two to be as damaging) then we almost have too many to tag.

Yes, this is his biggest flaw in my eyes and something that can't be remedied by just handballing it more.

Any slow player, or player that refuses to run both ways will be exploited in this way.

This is why someone like Elliot Yeo is so effective, he does have the speed to close down on opposition players running towards goal and is willing (and capable of) pushing into defence to derail offensive drives.

You already know my opinion on the extractor role, so I won't state it again but I will raise Brad Sewell as an example of a fairly limited player that played the that role in a premiership team, and to good effect.

brad sewell was given his marching orders by hawthorn - he can kick btw - and handpass more than 20 feet

I liked Sewell, thought he was a reasonable player, but just on your point above hawthorn didm't play him much in 2014, dropped him after the Qualifying Final and then didn't offer a spot for 2015. He had to battle for his position during this dominance, partially due to injury but over the last 3 years there was talk even by Clarkson in the media that his position in the team is questionable.

They and most other teams have moved away from "no1 extractor guy". Now it tends to be "stoppage beast", but that player is in no way as limited as Priddis, Thompson & Sewell. They can usually be moved forward as well like Fyfe, Kennedy & Dangerfield etc.

Thought was his best game of the year so far. Muffed a couple of kicks but his handball was clean and effective.
Needs to back it up next week.

Not a Priddis hater but muffing a couple of kicks when you totalled 6 is still a 33% shank ratio. Priddis, Lecras and Wellinghams kick to handball ratio was influential in our favour.

im sure you will start going to games and watch his every move and then you will realise what a great player he is like i did i was a bit like you when we lost a game or two so needed someone to blame and remembering priddis get burned off on a chase . then i saw a game where priddis didnt play and we were smashed so bad i realised how much we need him

i disagree priddis is least limited .these days players handpass quick 1 . it could open up to a player free eg if shuey could have quickly hand passed it off 2. if it doesnt work the player caught with the ball , in this case shuey didnt have time ,caught , no preoppotunity tto dispose so it is a ball up and this way it isnt a direct turnover . Eagles dominating stoppages so its a reset
