Interesting debate in this thread & some very good arguments being put forward & your reference to "behind closed doors" is a valid one.

For me, the wheels fell off when, after our loss to the Eagles, the powerbrokers put the 'r' word out there. That was when the divide between Malthouse & the club became apparent. Why were the media alerted to the club deciding to go down the rebuild road? Why was this not just an internal memo from the board/CEO to Silvagni, McKay & Malthouse? The media knew the 'r' word was anathema to the Carlton faithful & they quickly identified that it wasn't something for which all stakeholders were on the same page.

It soon became apparent, as this all started to unfold, that the board was leaking & it didn't seem to matter that the divide which now existed at the club was being played out in the media (much like the leaking from our board circa 2005/2006) & let me say, the blame for this lies on both sides of the divide.

I would be very surprised if their aren't divisive issues at play at all 18 AFL clubs however some clubs are very good at making sure these issues remain within the club & do not get debated through the blood thirsty media. If our club is to experience long-term success any time soon, the club needs to stop feeding the media everytime all stakeholders aren't on the same page. Successful/professional clubs don't air their dirty washing for all to see.

Is that how it occurred though? I couldbe mistaken but my recollection is that Trigg and LG both discussed the need for a rebuild in media interviews and it appeared a deliberate strategy to reset expectations in light of a poor start and in response to the MM ' can't see us losing a game' comment.

I hear what you're saying. The Malthouse thread was closed because it turned to crap so now the same thing works its way into every other thread.

It was closed mainly because Malthouse had gone and debating his worth around and around in circles was kind of redundant. This is more about the board's decision making and inevitably the validity of coaching decisions is a part of that.

That's what I meant by turned to crap, it just became a thread insulting Mick. What I'm saying is there's no replacement thread to discuss coaching and the board so it seeps into every other thread.

How did this all get turned around on me, anyway? I was just agreeing with someone else!

Nothing has been turned around. I just clarified the distinction between the Malthouse thread closing and the discussion here for the benefit of everyone but used your post as a segue.

McKay said Byrne had back tightness after recovering from the hamstring injury in the injury update video this week (or was it last week?), and because hamstrings and back muscles are closely linked in movement etc, they haven't risked him yet.

Just re-watched this weeks report and Macca does mention it. Hopefully he's right for next week in 2's and seniors for the final part of the season. Thanks for the clarification.

I'm often bemused by posters bemoaning trade discussion in the trade discussion thread .
One would think , if that's not your cup of tea , don't go there ...

Is there a specific thread for small talk ?
Milk crates , coffee shouting , hairdressers , etc etc etc .
Some obviously enjoy this type of banter and that's fine , but if there was a specific thread for it , those that prefer footy discussion could avoid it ... Everybody happy ...

I actually spend my time trying to make this board better by participating in the podcast and trying to organise a meetup--which other posters asked for.
