I thought travel agents would have been a thing of the past by now but people still use them. I'm not sure why.
A good travel agent is great for a big OS holiday. Sorts out a lot of gotchas for you. Makes you ask what you really want out of the trip. Then you fill in the blanks and hunt up better deals on your own.

Wotif, Trivago, Expedia etc appear as though they give you a better rate but the conditions aren't comparable. E.g. you can book a night for a cheaper rate but you will be charged 100% for cancellation or changes etc.
We found only one place that had a 7 day cancellation in our Europe trip. The rest you could cancel on the day, no charge. I think we found most through Trip Advisor.

There's two major companies that own the smaller third parties, so there's a duopoly.

You can say they're comparable all you like, I work for a major hotel company and I assure you that they're not. Third party websites are the reason hotel rates are going up, and up, and up...we've got to make back the commissions somehow.

where is you anger placed?

re-reading your post i got the impression you typed your post in an aggressive manner associated with the third party websites
It does irritate me when people come to the hotel and complain when they've booked through a third party website and still expect to get their loyalty benefits. It annoys me when people say they'll book on wotif because it's cheaper. I apologise if you think it was aggressive, that was unintentional.

you've posted in the right place.

i once gave my loyalty card to this one hotel and they said i booked through hotels so i cant get points. i nodded with an understanding facade and moved on.

why? people are always looking for a better deal, and if the deal means paying less while accepting perhaps no exorbitantly costed breakfast, then fair play.

no apology needed

Because most of the time it's not actually cheaper, and on the rare occasion that it is, if you call the hotel they'll price match.

Why is it that only about one percent of retailers realise that when giving change,it is easier to give coins first, then notes on top?
Notes given flat out with coins on top mean you can't easily put coins and then notes away nearly as easily as if you do it the other way around.

On the hotels thing, use private browsing as they useyour browsing history to see how likely you are to actually want to make a booking. More likely to book = higher price
Hmm, no.

Our rates do fluctuate on a daily basis but they're loaded into the websites. For example, our brand website may have a $190 rate loaded, Wotif may have $185, our property website may have $190 with carparking included. Those rates stay in the system until we program it to be changed.
