Excuse most likely bizarre ignorance. Do they not have them in WA?
Only place they are allowed is in the casino.

From the 1974 Royal Commission into gambling.

"...poker machine playing is a mindless, repetitive and insidious form of gambling which has many undesirable features. It requires no thought, no skill or social contact. The odds are never about winning. Watching people playing the machines over long periods of time, the impressionistic evidence at least is that they are addictive to many people. Historically poker machines have been banned from Western Australia and we consider that, in the public interest, they should stay banned."

I respect WA even more after knowing this.

Given the huge influx of cash from prize money, memberships, donations, and sponsorships: is it time for the club to bite the bullet and jettison gambling as a source of revenue?

The_Wookie - you would know the breakdown.

Would blowing up the pokies break the Hawks?
Lol the Hawks are still reliant on selling home games, the afl and tax payers hand outs!

So no they still need that gaming money

North quit the pokies a few years ago, they grew a spine and so should a few other clubs too. Pokies are a parasite.
North said no to them. But they run on a very small football budget & struggle to make ends meet and rely heavily on afl hand outs and selling home games.

The equalisation tax the afl is bringing in is its way to combat the football department spending habits of clubs & try and bring them more in to line

Overly simplistic. Pokies in every club of every suburb wouldn't work if punters were only losing $50 every weekend or so. Problem gamblers are a part of the system, and you have to remember that it's not simply the individual who chooses to gamble who pays the price. It's their families that get put under hardship. Think of it this way: remove the pokies, and you'll save countless families from hardship and breakdown. That doesn't mean banning gambling. It means not having pokies on every ******* suburban street corner.

Society is too lenient on people who don't deserve , if your stupid enough to blow all your money gambling bad luck... Don't put restrictions on society because 1% are unable to control themselves

I lost $4000 in a week last year and I only have myself to blame ...

It's not a restriction to makeyou drive to the casino. And as I said, it's the families that are the real victims.

Have you even been to Caroline Springs?....Sure, it's in the western suburbs, though it's hardly working class!

I have lived here for 15 years and it is true, the suburb is well off in comparison to others in the vicinity.

One of the reasons the Caroline Springs pokies does so well is that there are some retirement villages within walker distance. They would make a lot of their money from the pensions of old folks.

Never spent a cent in there myself on the pokies and have only been to the sports bar and the occasional counter meal. Only reason I go there rather than the other pub that is close is that the other pub is owned by the Collingwood Football Club. No way they are getting my money, Hawthorn is the lesser of two evils.

If the Pub was owned by Carlton, well then, I would be typing this post from there right now. :$

People are going to gamble regardless. Don't like pokies, fine don't play them.

With that argument, why fight drugs like ice? Dont like them, dont use them. People are going to use drugs regardless.

What is up with Hawk supporters justifying Pokie machines?

All clubs should ditch them, the question is not that Hawthorn should specifically ditch them. But could Hawthorn survive without them? Since they are of course a well run family club, who have just achieved a three peat.

And I keep posting ... why Hawthorn? If the thread was about ALL clubs, then maybe it has a point to it, but all people are worried about here is the amount of money Hawthorn are gaining from them. Along with Collingwood, we already pay more than other clubs for the AFL's "equalisation" plan, why shouldn't we be able to generate income through pokies as most other clubs do? This thread is nothing more than an attempt to take another cheap shot at a club which gets off its arse makes things happen rather than sit around waiting for the AFL to give them handouts.

Yes I did. So why single Hawthorn out? Did you even read my post?
Because you're the biggest and best example of where a club has an opportunity to cut the cord. That's why, if the answer is in fact no (which is insinuated by the odd rallying to defending poker machines :drunk:), then that's a shame and all the clubs in Victoria can never collectively get rich clean.

If anyone sees pokies as a necessary evil, then they might as well advocate that clubs are able to run drug rings etc etc. Profiting off misery should fall into the bracket of 'things not to do'.

I'm sure Hawthorn would like to ditch gaming machines, as would geelong and others, but no team is going to put themselves at a disadvantage by not pursuing entirely legal pursuits. And like it or not, gambling money is too big to just take away.

Agreed.
A better solution would be for the AFL to tax gaming profits for all clubs at 75% of profit

Why do we need another tax? It just takes revenue from the clubs and gives it back to the AFL.
What is the point in that?

How are we in a better position to get rid of them than Collingwood? Only the dumbest of administrations would make a long term financial decision like this based off a period of success which the club may never experience again.

I don't like pokies, but how is it any different to clubs being involved with selling alcohol, or cigarettes, or the AFL's gambling sponsors?
