Is it time for the Hawks to ditch gaming?

Clubs like Hawthorn and Collingwood are in a perfect opportunity to diversify because they have very good cash flow from football operations, and they can diversify out into non-football investments without getting into pokies. Pokies is a relatively cheap investment, it generates a lot of money for the capital outlay if you deploy them somewhere prone to problem gambling. However, these clubs make enough money to look at other more legitimate investments.

I used to work in wealth creation, making rich people richer, and it was never about taking the cheap or easy option, those usually have finite or low ceilings. It takes money to make money, the more you have, the wider range of options you have. It is always the most desirable option to do what is ethical, make investments which help people rather than harm them.

Clubs want to diversify outside of football revenue because football is seasonal and the bills keep coming even when the season ends,

I'm happy for the club to invest in the Canadian Oil sands.

Makes me laugh reading this thread, especially from a Carlton person. HUGE ha ha to them. What an amazing recovery since 1996.

It's not about club rivalries.

It's not about club rivalries.
Yes it is . This whole league is built on club rivalries. Like you said would no pokies "break the Hawks" lol

Your club is NOTHING NOW. Do you understand this?

Your club deserves another decade of pain, trying to buy flags by not building a team in a legitimate way. I trust you enjoyed watching Kennedy this season.

Enjoy watching us roll on. Legitimate profits off field, and legitimate smart play on it. We follow rules! The family club!

A better way to do it would be to remove the financial advantage they hand to clubs using them.

I understand the premise of flagging Hawthorn in the OP, however if they are to be phased out ....then we need to do it across the board.

The best way would to be count Pokie revenue against the AFL funding, the more you make from pokies - the less you get from the AFL (or if you want to get serious - the more you contribute to an equalisation pool for non-pokie teams).

Not wanting to make this a political, however WA's stand on pokies costs about 500 million a year, as whilst things like mining royalties are included in state revenue calculations, gambling revenue is excluded. Basically the Grants Commission say State A can't dig up iron ore so we adjust for that, however WA could have pokies so that's not counted.

Taking a similar view, let clubs use pokies - just take away the financial incentive to do so and it will level out.

What does this rant have to do with this thread?

We are suggesting changing the rules.

Plus the last one I've purposefully not mentioned because it's chest beating, but WA teams are rich. One of them particularly rich maybe even extremely rich. No pokies required to get this, hell they don't even get handouts and still pay 'taxes' to the WAFC that the rest of the comp does not, then equalisation still gets slapped on top. So I'm inclined to think it's possible to do without pokies, since you've all just stomped everyone with a three-peat which oddly enough included both the WA clubs.

did north quit pokies or lose their license and then take the moral high ground.
Also hawks are increasing their gaming so no chances of OP's suggestion

So are cigarettes.
But it's legal to sell them, and I don't see people up in arms about milkbars, servos, pubs, newsagents, and supermarkets selling cigarettes to mothers and fathers who aren't smart enough to give a shit about the risk of cancer and death, yet people get quite upset about pokies and how they ruin families.

Idiots have always, and will always find ways to throw away their money, and in the case of cigarettes they're often throwing their life away too.
Yeah fantastic mate, more pokies so Hawks can get richer, fk everyone else!! Obviously while ciggies are being sold we should increase pokies, I can certainly see the correlation.

Pokies...foreign problem for us in WA. I had no idea AFL clubs profit significantly from gambling. Pretty sad.

WC aren't exactly free from affiliation.....

FTR, the sooner Hawthorn can move away from pokies the better.

It has absolutely nothing to do with club rivalries and if you genuinely took that from the OP I'd wager you've got a few screws loose, or just trolling. There's even Hawthorn posters in here entirely agreeing with the idea that Hawthorn could and should ditch the pokies (among other clubs, if they can afford it).

It's especially an interesting conversation to have given North have given them up and are doing okay for themselves. It saddens me that my own club is so dependent on them that our very financial survival could be in the balance if we lost them and I hope it can change. But if North can, then surely the richer clubs like Hawthorn could look at doing it.

While the AFL continues to profit from gambling advertising I can't see them winning enough support to implement a system like this.

North turned down $100 million to relocate to the Gold Coast.

And here's your typical deflection ..when presented with something bad, straight away point at something else and say that's worse . kinda like a 5 year old in an argument.

AFL Club North Melbourne has joined forces with World Vision as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, in a move that has seen North Melbourne turn its back on receiving income from gambling.

This comes after North Melbourne ended its partnership with a betting agency late last year and surrendered its pokie machine license four years ago.

North Melbourne’s Chief Executive Eugene Arocca said, “A strong CSR program is fundamental to having greater community engagement and this partnership will extend our Corporate Social Responsibility to a national and even international level.”

“Our club motto is ‘Victory demands Care’, and we believe we can help drive everyday community and social issues. We are encouraged to have World Vision Australia supporting us and will be using the experience and wisdom of Tim Costello and his organization to ensure we continue to raise the bar on how sporting clubs interact with society on community issues.”

The move was welcomed by World Vision who will now have their logo added to North Melbourne’s backdrop at press conferences.

Tim Costello, World Vision Australia’s Chief Executive, spoke in support of the move from North Melbourne. “I commend the North Melbourne Football Club for embracing Corporate Social Responsibility in such a committed way and I’m delighted that the club has chosen World Vision to share in its dream for a more caring community. This unique partnership is an exciting opportunity for World Vision Australia.”

“As a passionate football supporter, I understand the important role Aussie Rules plays in Australian culture and in diverse sections of the community. This partnership allows World Vision an opportunity to raise the profile of our work as well as engage with new voices to promote a just and equitable world.

“North Melbourne would be the only Melbourne-based AFL team World Vision can partner with because our screening policies say we don’t take money from gambling, from armaments and tobacco. And they don’t have pokies or sports-betting sponsorships. Tobacco destroys lives, as does gambling and armament.

However, the partnership has not been supported by all. The Herald Sun reports that former North directors, businessman Peter de Rauch and hotelier John Nicholson used the announcement to attack North Melbourne President James Brayshaw labeling him a ‘teddy-bear’ and saying the deal would make it “nearly impossible for North to be financially viable”.
