How the Mighty have fallen.
Makes me laugh reading this thread, especially from a Carlton person. HUGE ha ha to them. What an amazing recovery since 1996.

How the Mighty have fallen.
Clubs like Hawthorn and Collingwood are in a perfect opportunity to diversify because they have very good cash flow from football operations, and they can diversify out into non-football investments without getting into pokies. Pokies is a relatively cheap investment, it generates a lot of money for the capital outlay if you deploy them somewhere prone to problem gambling. However, these clubs make enough money to look at other more legitimate investments.
I used to work in wealth creation, making rich people richer, and it was never about taking the cheap or easy option, those usually have finite or low ceilings. It takes money to make money, the more you have, the wider range of options you have. It is always the most desirable option to do what is ethical, make investments which help people rather than harm them.
Clubs want to diversify outside of football revenue because football is seasonal and the bills keep coming even when the season ends,
I'm happy for the club to invest in the Canadian Oil sands.

Yes it is . This whole league is built on club rivalries. Like you said would no pokies "break the Hawks" lolIt's not about club rivalries.
What does this rant have to do with this thread?Yes it is . This whole league is built on club rivalries. Like you said would no pokies "break the Hawks" lol
Your club is NOTHING NOW. Do you understand this?
Your club deserves another decade of pain, trying to buy flags by not building a team in a legitimate way. I trust you enjoyed watching Kennedy this season.
Enjoy watching us roll on. Legitimate profits off field, and legitimate smart play on it. We follow rules! The family club!

Great attitude mate, such a worldly outlook you have.People are going to gamble regardless. Don't like pokies, fine don't play them.
Yeah fantastic mate, more pokies so Hawks can get richer, fk everyone else!! Obviously while ciggies are being sold we should increase pokies, I can certainly see the correlation. So are cigarettes.
But it's legal to sell them, and I don't see people up in arms about milkbars, servos, pubs, newsagents, and supermarkets selling cigarettes to mothers and fathers who aren't smart enough to give a shit about the risk of cancer and death, yet people get quite upset about pokies and how they ruin families.
Idiots have always, and will always find ways to throw away their money, and in the case of cigarettes they're often throwing their life away too.
Pokies...foreign problem for us in WA. I had no idea AFL clubs profit significantly from gambling. Pretty sad.
It has absolutely nothing to do with club rivalries and if you genuinely took that from the OP I'd wager you've got a few screws loose, or just trolling. There's even Hawthorn posters in here entirely agreeing with the idea that Hawthorn could and should ditch the pokies (among other clubs, if they can afford it).Makes me laugh reading this thread, especially from a Carlton person. A better way to do it would be to remove the financial advantage they hand to clubs using them.
I understand the premise of flagging Hawthorn in the OP, however if they are to be phased out ....then we need to do it across the board.
The best way would to be count Pokie revenue against the AFL funding, the more you make from pokies - the less you get from the AFL (or if you want to get serious - the more you contribute to an equalisation pool for non-pokie teams).
Not wanting to make this a political, however WA's stand on pokies costs about 500 million a year, as whilst things like mining royalties are included in state revenue calculations, gambling revenue is excluded. Basically the Grants Commission say State A can't dig up iron ore so we adjust for that, however WA could have pokies so that's not counted.
Taking a similar view, let clubs use pokies - just take away the financial incentive to do so and it will level out.

It's especially an interesting conversation to have given North have given them up and are doing okay for themselves. It saddens me that my own club is so dependent on them that our very financial survival could be in the balance if we lost them and I hope it can change. But if North can, then surely the richer clubs like Hawthorn could look at doing it.
And here's your typical deflection ..when presented with something bad, straight away point at something else and say that's worse . kinda like a 5 year old in an argument. So are cigarettes.

did north quit pokies or lose their license and then take the moral high ground.
Also hawks are increasing their gaming so no chances of OP's suggestion
So, you'd have been happy if Hawthorn were offered that, and took it?North turned down $100 million to relocate to the Gold Coast.
Great attitude mate, such a worldly outlook you have.
Or the fact that the Hawks have taken $35 million from the Tasmanian government and still play most of their games on the MCG.So, you'd have been happy if Hawthorn were offered that, and took it?
That's not even close to answering the question I asked.Or the fact that the Hawks have taken $35 million from the Tasmanian government and still play most of their games on the MCG.
