people should avoid naming themselves after lions players... good chance you will have to name change down the track

Pick 17 will be used on the academy kids anyway. If we downgrade it, it gives us more options to trade picks 26, 27 or 32 for experienced players or take to the draft. More flexibility.

For example:
Trade Jack Redden = Pick 17 (West Coast)
Trade James Aish + Pick 17 = Pick 24 (St Kilda) + Pick 26 (Collingwood) + Pick 27 (GWS) + Pick 32 (Gold Coast)
Trade Pick 21 + Pick 75 = Levi Casboult + Tom Bell (Carlton)
Trade Pick 40 + Pick 57 = Josh Walker + Jarred Jansen (Geelong)
Trade Pick 39 = David Astbury
Trade Pick 32 = Ryan Bastinac
Pick 2 = Joshua Schache
Pick 24 + Pick 26 + Pick 27 (2217 points) = Eric Hipwood + Ben Keayes

Depends whether we actually may want to use 17 or not also...

If we don't trade Astbury etc in, maybe just Bell plus 2 academy picks, and get some picks for Aish, we may then decide to use 17.

Bound to be a few good pick still left at 17 (think Collins, Oliver, Hibberd, Ah Chee, Bonner, Tucker, Burton - plus maybe a surprise slider like there always seems to be).

17 could end up a very valuable pick then in that circumstance.

Step 4 Essendon drafts him
End result = we get SFA

By making him feel wanted for a start. We struggle to manage people, if you take the rose coloured glasses off you may just see it too. Essendon offer him $375,000, we can't beat that? His settled in Brissie, his been loyal to the club, would rather him stay than take pick 39. Good back up. We thought we'd get a better pick, we didn't. It was a c@ck up, not that long ago many on here were talking up the possibility of pick 3, they forgot the 9.

So we're all like "nah, baby I've love you more, You're totally our first ruck". Then play him in the NEAFL for 3 years. On $400K. That what you're thinking of?

Depends what you meant by "good backup"... actually, no it doesn't.

If you mean he is a good second ruckman... no he isn't.

If you mean he is good to have sitting in the reserves, waiting for your first string ruckman to get injured... I agree. But it's not fair on him, which is why he is taking a pay cut to be first string ruckman somewhere else.

The only way we could have made him feel sufficiently "wanted" would have involved trading Stefan Martin.

Wouldnt every player traded/drafted be an exciting prospect?

Bit hard to sell, well he is boring as batshit but we think the fans will come out in droves to see him.

I would have preferred a higher pick, but it was difficult to see how we could achieve one. The Swans might have provided an option, but their trading for Sinclair closed off that option. Matching meant he could have gone to the PSD and we could have re-drafted him, but to what end? I suspect the Lions will use a pick in the PSD. In the end the Lions decided that there might be some guaranteed extra trade / bidding currency by taking Pick 39 as an extra pick.

We now have four picks inside the Top 40. Picks 2, 17, 21 and 39.

In fact, effective people management means letting him go and do that somewhere.

Yeah, but you keep skipping the bit about Leuey being free to make his own choice on where he wants to play, play in his preferred position/capacity which isn't open to him here.
The club didn't push him out and beyond that everything else is out of the Lions' control.
You still haven't explained how they went wrong.

Big Lion, you're also assuming Leuenberger is an idiot. I've met him and that he is not. He would absolutely know that he's the backup. Being dropped for Martin would tend to make that obvious.

*Bids for Hipwood and Keays at 9 and 13 (seems to be the highest they go)


Picks Going into Draft: 2, 24, 26, 39, 42, 59, 78
#2. Schache
#9. Hipwood (Pick #24 moves to back of the draft, Pick #26 becomes Pick #46)
#13. Keays (Pick #39 moves to back of draft, Pick #42 moves to back of draft, Pick #46 becomes Pick #55)
#55. Possible Academy Player (Pick #55 can match any bid on academy player from Pick #42 onwards)
#59. (Pick #55 & Pick #59 combined can match a bid on an academy player from Pick #33 onwards)
#78. Best of the rest? (Jansen trade?)
End of Draft Picks: Chol, Williams and maybe another academy player if they get bids after Pick #55.

Seems we'll have enough currency to be heavily involved Trade Period still if we don't need Picks 17 and 21 (does require us to get Aish done. But we'll probably roll over)
