This just showed up on the side of a site I was on. I would have thought it would be bigger news and definitely not just in the entertainment section.

It was linked to a story from November when his last single came out. I guess the software just notices an increased interest in Bowie on the net and so brings back links that it thinks are relevant.

It gets better that the clip it linked to was Richard Wilkins who has previously announced the death of Jeff Goldblum when he was (and still is) perfectly alive.

A bit late to the party, and those more educated on the topic can correct me, but regarding smartphones vs cards:

What advantages could be gained by replacing credit/bank cards with smartphones? For EFTPOS at a shop, I can understand the convenience. But why should ATMs move to 'cardless cash'? What if my phone is malfunctioning or (more likely) flat, and I need money now? A card never has a flat battery, and a thief cannot withdraw money using it because they don't know my PIN.

I like carrying both a wallet and a smartphone. My card ain't broke, so why fix it?

Your phone doesn't necessarily need to be working in order to also act as your card. It can be used in a number of ways when working (internet connection, NFC), but you could also have a passive NFC chip that draws its power from the reader (like the chip on your paywave card). That is just as secure as paywave.

For cardless cash you need the net connection and you do have to input your net banking passcode to assess it, this is in addition the the screen lock my phone has.

I dislike that phrase. Continuous Improvement is what we want - nothing is perfect even if it is adequate. How can we improve it?

For those of us that would prefer to not carry around a heap of things, this is better.

I carry my cards inside my phone holder with money in its side pocket.
It would be good to have everything on the phone, though. There will be a time in the not-to-distant future when the phone does it all. You can already access some vending machines and can check in airports using your phone. You can check the security of your premises using cameras that connect to your phone. Pretty soon you'll operate your roller door. use it for operating all electronic devices in your home, start your car, etc.

Thanks for explaining. For my money (literally), I think I'll stick with my bank card at the teller machine until I'm forced to change.

It's probably not a bad idea to have the cardless option still setup for that emergency moment where you might lose your wallet but have your phone and need quick access to cash. Probably a rare thing, but if it happens you'd be thankful for the foresight.

I had a PayTag on my old phone. It was so horrible to use I threw it out when I upgraded my phone. The tag pretty much only worked on older EFTPOS machines with an external PayPass/PayWave reader on it. Newer EFTPOS machines won't read the PayTag.

Also the time it took to turn the tag on and off it was often just quicker getting the card out.

Had to laugh when the CommBank app added the 'wallet' 'feature', where you could put your loyalty cards on your phone. Only problem is they used older style barcodes that don't read on scanners, making the feature useless.

You can also use it to send money to someone else.

Say your kid is stuck somewhere without a card and needs cash to get home or something. You can have the details sent to their phone to allow them to take cash out.

I occasionally use NFC with the Commbank app to pay for things if I am out without my card. I like it as an idea, but it only works half the time on good Eftpos machines and never on others (even if they do have PayWave), which means it is very unreliable and you really have to take your card with you anyway as backup, and since it usually takes multiple attempts to tap the phone correctly the card ends up being much quicker/more reliable so it's just easier to use that.

Wow, Jakey Lehmann hits a 6 off his first ball and last ball of the game to get the Strikers the home semi-final!

But how was Chris Gayle? Thought it might be over in 5 overs.
